can't really tell which one chokes first but this was a damn good review. you should know why nikon choked first bcuz nikon incorporates 1 imaging processor (aka single expeed) while the canon uses dual processor (aka dual digic 3) therefore, the canon could processes faster and more images than the nikon could do. so, if its clearly said that canon are better than the nikon.

If you shoot professional sports like football or basketball, you're shooting well over 900 shots anyway. Composition is important, but the kinds of photography that require high FPS aren't the ones where you spend 30 seconds to a minute composing shots.

Hi there, can you re-do this test leveling the variables please?

Set the Nikon to the same speed as the 1Ds dissapointing maximum 5fps and make sure both cameras are running the same image size making it a fair test. Running the Canon at 5fps and jpeg is not fair compaired to running the nikon at 11fps and RAW. I'm not saying thats what you did but the Nikon is deffinately shooting a lot faster shutter speed than the canon. I'm assumeing thats the D3 and canon 1d Mk III isn't it?

canon have a 21.1mp FF 1Ds MKIII and the 10.1mp 1.3x 1D MkIII since the file for the 1Ds is twice the size of the D3 it take longer to buffer. If Canon wanted the 1Ds MKIII to shoot 9fps they would have done that but whats the point the D3 has 12.1 mp so does the origional 5D and thats been out for near 5 years now. nikon needs to step it up.

This is a debate of the past, the momentum is clearly in Nikon's favour and I don't see Canon reversing this trend in the 3 to 4 coming years.

Canon cameras remain excellent tools, but those looking for the best glass and body combo should definitely consider switching over to Nikon.

I shoot a d300 and couldnt be happier (unless somone handed me a d700) about popularity, lets put it into perspective. i was recently at glasto festival and i cannot recolect seeing one d3 i saw literally hundreds of 1ds mk3s. alas only my friend and i sported liecas that weekend

The MKIII stomps the D3 here, and in most areas (including AF performance, color accuracy, etc).

Also, the buffer on the D3 is insufficent for RAW shooting, which most pros will be using. It also apparently has a hard time hitting even 9FPS.

When it comes to high ISO performance, the D3 finally catches up to what Canonites have been used to for half a decade. The difference in noise between these two cameras is VERY small.

Canon still provides the world's best pro sports camera.

Casio has a digital camera which can do 60fps.. my point here is 'fps' doesn't tell the whole story. It's good to had HIGH fps, but you have to compare them apple to apple... D3 & 1DMK3, both have diff MegPixel.. if you read the spec, you will know who the KING in fps comparsion.

Yeah, but also it is important to take into consideration more than megapixels. It's important to consider the density of pixels on a sensor as to its ISO performance. The D3 destroys just about everything in ISO performance. And FPS. Maybe not mega-pixels, okay, definitely not megapixels, but speed-wise the D3 is king. It really depends on each photographer's needs as to which camera is best. There is no ultimate best dSLR.

With the settings I had on both camera's it made no difference that the D3 hit it's buffer first.

It is kind of pointless to slow the Nikon D3 down if you are not using CF cards that support UDMA. With a UDMA card the D3 can shoot write to the card about three times faster effectively extending the total amount of frames that it can store at full speed before the buffer fills.
