@ch72105 This isn't an old song in any respect, but the genre, the way its sung, the type of music with it is of an older generation, that modern people just don't appreciate. Good lyrics and a great tune just don't cut it for modern music, modern music has to contain at least 50% computer generated bad sound affects :P Great song, one of my favorites along with "Border Reiver".
Hands down the one of the best lead guitar tones ever. Quickly reconcilable as the man himself. I heard this on KPIG the other day coming back from Santa Cruz for work. Good shit.
How to play this riff? It's so crazy but so good! Saw it twice on Stockholm globe arena, one is recorded in my phone and I have it as a ring signal. But what the hell, I cannot play it.
One of the best songs of Mark Knopfler, he wrote the last years he goes solo. My favior songs are more like Dire Straits sound, instead the very irish folk touched sound of Mark's actually songs.
This song is like a curse to me. Everytime I have an appointment and this starts to play on my car / computer / mp3, I go like "Oh c'mon... Now I have to hear the whole thing" and I end up leaving 5 minutes later (which most times are crucial) just because I can't skip or stop the song...
This isn't timeless at all. Actually, its very dated. The song is about Ray Kroc and how McDonald's came up in the world by undercutting family restaurants. Its actually about a very specific time. So I'm quite unsure how timeless fits this song.
@MrMunchauzen, careful dude, that is an intelligent opinion you are expressing there, and in case you had not noticed, that kinda' thing will get you into trouble with most of the mouth-breathing idiots 'round these parts (spoken with an exaggerated drawl)....
@MrMunchauzen maybe it has to do with the feel of the song...but its story is the same with any other large business that came to dominate the market. Like look at Andrew Carnegie's businesses or Rockefeller's Oil monopoly where they ousted individual businesses by underpricing them through machine-like efficiency. (Yes I know that McDicks was started in 1955 while these were at the dawn of the 20th century but I feel that the message still applies)
@MrMunchauzen You'll find most people prefer to listen to the actual music, rather than the actual meaning behind the song. Whilst the meaning may be dated, the brilliance of Knopfler and this song is timeless.
Any song that isn't about love, teenagers, or sex has to be admired, and here's a really good one about a famous businessman (Ray Kroc). Kudos to Knopfler for doing something atypical, and doing it well.
@frankc32 geez i gotta say this i dont give a fuck 2 be honest mate sound like doggy dog 2 me so i aint arsed good song anyway no matter wot it sez an yer i can spell properly i just cba at the min coz im hungover :)
