  • whats the point of playing a combat encounter with premade characters for an hour or two ? where is the roleplay? what's the campaign? where is the god damn story? in a good campaign there is even sessions without a single combat and the main focus is the story. just play cod or something for an hour, thats make more sense than playing a d&d encounter with random people and no story

  • We've been playing D&D that way for years. Who knew we were so ahead of our time. :)

  • That DM isn't a real DM.

A real DM is one who says "Hey, anyone up for some Dungeonland?" One who poses a threat and challenges people instead of letting them live and making sure no one dies. That's pathetic, it's a game, if you don't have time to spend don't cheap out by letting DMs baby you though to level 20.

  • @RhetoricGamingHD The gaming hobby is more than large enough to support multiple styles of play. At times I prefer what you're describing, at other times I prefer knowing I'll probably live so that I can get deeper into the storyline without wondering when I'll have to roll a new character.

  • @RhetoricGamingHD I think what he means is that the point is not to try and kill the party. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but that shouldn't be the DM's goal.

  • @jdebruynviolin It takes away the satisfaction of overcoming challenges and being victorious with your friends. Yeah sure it doesn't mean they won't kill a character but the fact that they're supposed to make it easy is pretty stupid.

  • 0:41 playing with earphones? lol wtf

  • Mini-campaign? A short pick up session here and there does not make a campaign.

Anyways! While 4th edition sucks it's a good "gateway game" for new players. First they start with the Pokemon cards, then they move on to Magic: the Gathering before next transitioning to D&D Encounters. After that they're in a good position to finally try a worthwhile game. :)

  • @Arikiel 4e can be just as good as previous editions. It just relies heavier on everyone investing into the game.

  • I've played D&D heavily since 2005, and my groups usually average 1 girl and 3-5 guys. So, we do need more female gamers, but they are not as rare as some people make it out to be.

  • Play encounters... and then go and buy Pathfinder! LOL

  • Of course girls play D&D. I DM a weekly game that's all female players. I think we ladies just tend to stick together because we hate the smell of unwashed nerds, or on the other hand, guys who wash and then got for a swim a kiddie pool full of Axe body spray.

  • @TrNdke gamer girls are great because i can still be a geeks arounds them but at the same time there still women so i can be manly sometimes to, plus there actually smart enough to get jokes that are above starting with "knock knock" lol gamer chicks flat out rule

  • @TrNdke Your Constitution must be real bad if you can't stand the smell of unwashed nerds. As a Warlock, I have decent Con and really good Fortitude. Allow me to join ya'll so I can engage the foul-smelling nerds in melee range. My Dex is also high for dodges and reflex saves, in case of any "nasty and "collateral" attacks. You'll have to let me handle this my way, but I do this also in good will(Chaotic Good).

    Do you accept? ^_^

  • @Agent1W It's not that my CON is to low, it's that my INT is too high. But, yeah, you go do all the "melee engaging" of unwashed nerds you want.

  • @TrNdke Very well. For compensation, I'll need to receive a quarter of the total loot...

  • To those who think girls don't usually like to play D&D - especially not hot girls with a functioning libido and wild sex life - google "Playing D&D with porn stars".

Also, I bet the brunette doesn't get hit on very often. Gamer geeks usually are far too insecure to do that.

  • I bet the brunette at :56 gets hit on incessantly at gaming stores.

  • I am leval 9 assassin with 42 hp!

  • Who's the dark headed chick? lol

  • D&D is actually a plot by cool jocks to get rid of geeks, the lead figurines poison their brains so they don't reproduce.

  • @rickcain2320

Too bad Wizards discontinued the Miniatures line.

  • 0:52, look at me, I'm a level 27 virgin.

  • @rickcain2320 do you mean the guy who comes on at :50 or :53???

  • @slimjseattle Because I'm AT LEAST 29th level!!

  • The ratio of girls in gaming is very low. They're there, but not in force. I'm sure that as a promotional video, they went out of their way to get cute girls in this video. Also the current D&D sucks. But that's another story.

  • Ok so if I wanted to play an Encounters game can I use the character sheet form the latest Red box or do I need to update my sheet? If so where do I go to put info on it as the players guide doesn't seem to have as much detail.

  • Okay...cool

  • i remember when encounters didnt take an hour to play throu . in the original ad&d you could run a basic adventure for lvl 4-6 in about 5 hours total and that was having all kinds of encounters and combat didnt take forever to do. 1 encounter taking an hour is way to long and i have watched players sit there goofing off while some one is trying to attack . it tends to take away the fun of how the game was suposed to be. its more fun if things go at kind of a fast pace.

  • I'd use dildo as my character icon, is that ok?

  • @LatestUFOSightings hahahaha

    no you're human garbage

  • Where can I find one near me?

    Im in sacramento, CA.

  • you may just invite girls to rpgs and that will be great. My warhammer 3rd edition best players are ladies, and their 3 players party just rock the game (Elf Envoy, Roadwarden, Trollslayer).

And you know what ? wthat they prefer is combat, slashing and hacking.

  • THE NIPPLE CLAMP OF DOOM!

  • @Theoppsopps11 a hot elf ;)

  • though i do not play D&D (i use homebrew) I am personally grateful for D&D encounters, as they said in the video "all walks of life" are starting to play, it's no longer just the gamer geeks, anyone can and will do it given the proper chance and a friendly, non elitist environment. That's a good thing i think.

  • @runningpip same here..for about five years i looked(did not have internet) and could never find it..finally order the new RedBox from amazon....great lets see when it gets here haha

  • 4e destroyed D&D...

  • @bobgoblyn

    No, it made it better.

    My opinion=better than yours

  • @bobgoblyn you have that right

  • "We're not suppose to kill the party....just...almost...."

  • Yeah the chick with the elven hair is a hottie. I'm about to play a local game here next week.. Wondering if I'll like 4E. Damn, I just bought the full leather bound 3.5 handbooks.

  • Fuck you 4th edition wizard of coast loving fucks. AD&D lives, death to the glossy mall game

  • @InterplanetaryRythm Right on, how dare they actually like something different than you.

  • This is pathetic. Pathfinder, all the way.

  • lol this video is not an acurate representation of the gender ratio at these events :D

    still fun though

  • @adv1k

10 dudes to 2-4 gals seems about right from my experience

some hobby shops have even more estrogen going on

  • I recommend encounters to everyone. It's a great way to find out if 4e is something you enjoy. I was a sceptic at first, but have come around.

Whether or not or to which extent you RP (especially in home campaigns) is completely up to you and your DM. Saying that you are restricted by the system is missing the point entirely. Bend the system to meet your needs!

  • Ugh, please, 4th EDITION IS NOT D&D! It is a horrible, dumbed-down, warped version of its former self! Stop presenting it as anything it was before, it's not! It doesn't come close to the traditional and consistent mechanics and lore of 3E, 2E, and 1E! It deserves to go out of business and handed over to Paizo, so they can bring back the best edition of all (3.5e/Pathfinder) and give D&D back the dignity and soul it lost to stupid influences like World of Warcraft!

  • @Razzelmire

I've played every edition of DnD except 1st (and I have all the books of that). I have pathfinder & I think 4E is great. No more healings being the full action for clerics and that's all they can do. I I love my wizard never having to fire a crossbow bolt but use magic. No more 1st level adventures where you fight one monster and everybody goes to rest because their too low on resources. 4E a welcome change.

  • @Razzelmire 3.5! You got that right!

  • Stereotypes about WoW, D&D etc are getting really annoying. Cliche as it sounds it's more like hanging out with friends. It's no comparison to Xbox live, but the communication and interaction to other people are basically the same. So...stfu.

  • @JJKId93

Each class has a ROLE clearly defined in MMOs. The choice of class is all shoehorned, no room for real customization. Everything is about combat. There's no Profession or Craft skills or deities of agriculture because it all has to be about bloody combat. The monsters are all designed to kill, not RP with (hence, no leprechauns, or "good" angels, or "good" metallic dragons, everything is practically unaligned and gray). The races are even WoW inspired, Eladrins are just Blood Elves.

  • @Razzelmire

Also, while combat is a major part of the game it always was in DnD. As Gygax stated despite what "deep rpers" claim DnD was never intended as a game of amateur thespianism. Nothing in the game stops you currently from writing multiple pages of character background and having your character be a master of Bohemian basket weaving it's just the game is now designed so people who want their character to be effective don't have to dump points in a non-essential stat.

  • @JJKId93

Then there is the destruction and sacrilege of ruining continuity and 30+ years of D&D lore (elves live 200 years? The 5 metallic dragon roster suddenly switches? Paladins can be any alignment? The alignments went from 9 to 6? There's no Law and Chaos? WTF?!). Let's not forget the butchering of campaign settings (like Forgotten Realms). No backwards compatibility and I am missing out on new books for 3.5e because there is only 4E books now.

  • Wow, chicks playing D&D? Where do I sign up???

  • @JiveMiguel70 doesn't it seem like they stress the fact that they got really lucky with those few nice looking women to come to this event? it really feels like they really pushed that a bit obviously to me, and kinda made me laugh.

  • @JiveMiguel70 Lol seriously dude there are tons of female role players out there.

  • @JiveMiguel70 as far away from your local dentist's office as possible

seriously I wonder how much compensation Wizards gave the females to nod and agree for a few brief seconds on camera

  • @JiveMiguel70 Haha. I'm lucky enough to have a wife who's a gamer.

  • @JiveMiguel70

Ha ha, of course chicks play D&D. There are two of us in our weekly campaign that we're currently playing. In my last campaign there were 3-5 depending on who showed up.

  • @aggieblue215 Gotta love those hot gamer chicks!!!!!

  • @snnecksjr Except the hot part. And yes, they still have the alpha jock boyfriend. They are not interested in their beta gm's. They are playing the nerd games for attention.

  • @LatestUFOSightings Actually I married a gamer. We play D&D every week and we play a lot of video games together. I've never been into jocks. Ever. They just don't understand.

  • @aggieblue215 yes but she is ugly so it doesn't count. She would switch you for Gackt or something in a heartbeat but nobody else wants her.

  • @LatestUFOSightings so if any nerds ever wonder why they don't attract hot women in droves it's the casual misogyny and bitterness we find right here in this guy

  • @JiveMiguel70 Well, find a more popular venue, for one.

  • I first started playing D&D a couple months ago at Encounters. It really is a good way to demo the game for the first time and see if you like 4th edition or not - you don't invest much time into it, and pre-generated characters are always available.

It also happens to be a great way to bring in new business to your hobby shop.

  • @JiveMiguel70 Yeah, I've noticed a lot more chicks ever since 4e's release.

  • @JiveMiguel70

I've never had a group without a female. Weird how people think girls don't play.

  • @Knoxerboy101 same. There's never been a group I've played in without at least one girl. They actually seem to pay more attention and know their character a little better, in my experience.

  • @SMWhit3out mostly I agree but the goth looking girl at around 0.50 (black hair) was ok...

But hey, I doubt many people try and use D&D to pull.

  • hi there, please check out my channel!... I am trying to make original videos and I really want the support of all you guys for keep doing my best... and if you like it... please suscribe!

    thanks!

    Nelson

  • As for the video itself, it's always great to see people having fun with RPGs.

I'm not sure Encounters is the format for me, but if it gets people together even just talking about the game, it definitely meets with my approval.

  • to bad new dnd gives you so many new particular rules and variations of those rules that you spend more time thinking critically as a gamer playing a game according to those rules rather than expecting the person to have an imagination and enable a player to ACTUALLY ROLE PLAY. externalizing the game by using figurines on a dungeon tile was the worst thing to ever happen to dnd.

  • @corwindarksky If you feel that rules are preventing you from roleplaying, then you clearly have no clue how to roleplay in the first instance.

  • @corwindarksky Gygax built the game with figurines in mind to begin with. D&D has very visible wargaming roots, so I don't think any "externalizing" that has happened over the past few years is due to positioning tracking devices.

The near necessity of power cards, maybe.

Heck, the whole power structure, along with the addition of healing surges and action points, added a bunch of new abstract concepts to keep track of.

Maybe those fade into the background eventually. I don't know yet.

  • @corwindarksky well said

  • Great video! Dungeons and Dragons is all kinds of fun. Encounters is a great opportunity to play if you only have a couple hours a week.
