I share your frustration re availability of 1980' road vehicles. My railway is based in 1987 (very specific Im afraid) and other than what you have, there is nothing. Its about time Oxford Diecast started on the large number of Vauxhalls, Fiats, Austin Rovers etc. I think patience is going to be key!! Lorries are in similar short supply. I recently bought a Base Models "Terrier" van in Hovis livery - very disappointing - nothing like a terrier, Mastiff yes, so not 1980's as advertised.....
@ba14eagle There are some more cars coming out. On oxfords website there is an Austin Princess, Vauxhall Viva, Morris Marina, VW T25 Van, Triumph 2500 and Jaguar XJS. However it doesn't say when that are going to be released.
All your videos are starting to get me thinking about starting up. Really inspirational. I am currently spending a lot of time researching model railways so I can decide on how to start. Things are much more technical compared to the time when I had my modest loft layout in, what, about 1980. What I need is some sort of track design software, but getting something decent and reasonably straightforward is proving to be difficult. I've downloaded SCARM but I don't like it.
@mjrennie I used another type of software but it also wasn't great. I ended up building the baseboards and then building up the layout design with bits of real track and paper cutouts.
@mjrennie Thanks, I found the layout design software a bit annoying. I ended building the baseboard and design the layout by laying track and paper cutouts
Great video enjoyed it as always! Also a couple of questions.... Firstly where did you get your tunnel prices from. Secondly what track cutters do you recommend??
Their videos are excellent, taste very sees them and the subject is very interesting for me because I am lover for train and have a Model Railroad. Everard, here in Brazil we call Maquete de Ferreomodelismo, and who dedicates to this hobby call Ferreomodelista, in the English language as it well-known is the person who hill or does it mould maquete by train? A hug.
Hi Rich , your layout is really coming along now i enjoy watching your videos you must be pleased with the progress. I am having a break from mine at the moment as it is peak summer and it is really too hot to work on it in the garage at the moment. I will get back to it once it cools down. Keep up the great work mate best regards andy
If it were me, I'd lose the box by the station and place the Art Deco one somewhere between the station and the junction. If I remember from your previous videos, the station box appears to be facing the wrong way (it should be facing the main line rather than the sidings, which would have most likely been controlled by individual point levers), and the distance between the two boxes as they currently are is a bit close.
@MrStopadoodledoo The signal box by the station is an old box that has been preserved by the station staff, it's not used for mainline trains. A number of old signal boxes at stations have been preserved like this in real life.
The Art Deco box will be in charge of all the points on the mainline.
@EverardJunction - True, and I'm not trying to be facetious, but it is facing the wrong way unless the station itself was relocated or the station staff dismantled and rebuilt it facing the other way for some reason. You could always put the two next to each other; when the LNWR box at Kendal was replaced with an LMS pattern one, they built the new box directly next to the old one so for a while there were two. Both long gone now, unfortunately.
could get 1 or 2 more landys and do a bit of an off road scene, your actually alright having that 110 land rover, the actual defender came out in 82 so u should be reet, do you know any police cars that would fit an 80s layout I cant find any??
Good work on the progress. I think Oxford DC should make more Austin cars like the Metro, Allegro, Maestro and the once common Montego. Not to forget the MG variants :).
What do you use to ballast with, do you mix your own pva, water, a touch of washing up liquid or do you use scenic cement? What are your plans for the helix in terms of scenery etc, super layout and vids thanks
id leave the transformer box where it is. it looks good there. id turn the signal office around and have it vertical to the train line that way the workers can see the trains coming. and you will be able to place the bridge behind it with a car park in the front
really looking good, i think the signal box is in the right place, youve placed it well there, what ballast do you use is it n gauge, ?? im laying my ballast 00 gauge coarse and it looks nothing like how good yours looks, and im using a bloody ballast spreader lol , i did see a vid on someone using n gauge ballast on a 00 gauge layout and it looked really good like yours, as usual lookin forward to the next vid, thanks
The old series 3 land rovers would still be built in the early 80s and older ones would still be around. Instead of a footbridge could you do a road bridge over the motorway so it looks like the cars have driven from somewhere?
Great video as usual, the layout is looking really superb now. I have got a problem with trains jumping on my new Peco point that i have just laid which keeps tripping my DCC system..any idea's. Looking forward to your next update, your vids are very inspiring and have pushed me into completing my track laying after two years of messing around.
@Ikestonrail Make sure the point is perfectly level and there are no obstructions. Then see what locos derail and where. See if there is anything you can do to stop the locos jumping.
Hi mate. Is that new part the same width as the other side? 2 and a half foot? Also ive messages you a few time, you always leave a reply so thank you. I've just uploaded my first update to my new layout. Maybe take a look if you get time?
Great to see a new update, I think you're about right with the signal building, maybe half way round the curve, I dunno. That curve is the best I've seen on here & you can definitely see the trains lean.
I've been toying with getting a DCC set for about a year & I found your channel a couple of weeks ago, the way you explain stuff is the clearest I've heard & after watching your videos I finally decided to get a 2nd hand Mixed Freight set, had it a few days now, even just brought a Class 37 & 40

Great update really like your ballasting on the track work nice and neat,as for cars the manufacturers are producing vehicles for lots of different ere,s now so more come on the market every year which is great. I had a 1982 W reg Ford Capri 3.OLtr S MK3 which had the Webster engine in before they changed it to the 2.8 injection model then had a C reg mk3 escort Xr3i 1986 showing my age now had both cars in 1988 I was only 18 at the time can't do that today.
@percomotion Thanks mate. I'd love to have a car like that today but it's just not possible. I make do with a 1.2 fiat, one day I’ll be able to afford something nicer.
One of my mates is 19 and has a 1979 triumph dolomite. Unfortunately he couldn’t afford the insurance on a sprint, but it's a nice car nonetheless.
Another impressive bit of progress. That Art Deco signla box looks good! Will be interested to see how you build up the hillside/scenery to see your technique for doing it. Your rolling stock is growing all the time...I am so jealous lol
Bit of a gap in that track under the motorway at 12.34. I always get that no mater how many times I measure first. Do you get much dust and muck from the roof not being lined?
Still the layouts looking good so far. I wish I could do as good as you have.
@MyPlonkerboy I deliberately leave gaps to allow for heat expansion during the summer. The track will break if you don't do it. I have covered the roof with white polystyrene to stop dirt falling onto the layout.
@EverardJunction Ahhh yes never though of that. I have had track buckling and that was the reason for that. The temp swing from winter to summer must be great..
the layout is looking great now. i am sure that when you get the scenery and the motor-way in place on that side of the layout the whole model railway will look amazing
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Also glad I got to see a cheeky shot of the flask train at the end. I've become somewhat obsessed with running one of my own since I first saw it.
