there music during this darkland days are commonly categorized in the gothic genre, maybe its because of there slightly depressed lyrics and accompanied with a rhythm that takes that depressive spirit out into orbit, manic-depressive music well maybe but the same i dont care and i think you dont care either, so what the shit we dont care about it anyways... you and i love this band for different reasons, you and i are opposite but what i know is that we both dig this band.
Maybe it's just because so many people knew them before this album and are surprised by your comment. To be frank, their style didn't change much from album to album. However, we are all enjoying the same thing so it doesn't really matter.
By the way, it's really dangerous to try and typecast a band into one particular genre. I think genres should never have been created and should not be observed for music to be subjective, for instance. Then we can truly operate from the same page. But then, you'd have to drop your "goth" stance. Are you ready to let go and let it all in?
"genres" are important. Just as language is important. We struggle to express our feelings and thoughts through language. Its a strange feature of the world, that there is a connection between language and the world.
From a purely scientific viewpoint language affects the way we think. For example, if your first langauge was Spanish but you spoke English primarily, you'd still think differently because of the way your language presnets itself. I'd like to think of music as global, something that all cultures share as a "first" language. For example, can't you find a connection between tribal drums and some current music? Thanks for your very intelligent post. It made me think and that's always welcome.
I do not disagree with you. (Although, I don't know of the "scientific viewpoint".) We don't need to stick with "language", we could just talk about "structures". Music is completely structured. Although it maybe difficult to completely describe the "structures". "tribal drums" and "some current music" has similarity because they share "structures".
Of course, there are things that happen in music that are not described. One musician pass it along to another. So, we have a musical culture.
Apparently if you have a first language, that will affect your thinking patterns if you study that kind of thing. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I will agree that that music is completely stuctured, as is language. I truly believe that. If all music contains structues, by philosophic reasoning all music contains at least one similarity. What is that structure and how do we define it? It's really easy to to say we have a musical culture and leave it at that.
Bertrand Russell and the logical positivist tried to make an exact language but everyone agrees they were not successful. How do you define a language? Language is defined by language. Circular arguement. We must end up with some kind of communal agreement.
Don't look to Bertrand Russel for any answers. I'd look to linguists and people who make a study of the brain and it's related areas. (Pinker). You can't define a language. The Inuit have so many words for snow that it baffles us. Their language could be taken to a communal agreement simply because language is not communal beyond their geography. It affects how we think and feel because of it's subltiies. Perhaps we could take this to personal comments. Always a pleasure talking to you.
Check out their version of Beach Boys' Surfin USA on Barbed Wire Kisses or just get the MP3. I am a big Brian Wilson fan but I like the JAMC's version better than the original. Darklands is their best album, not a bad tune on it. But they released a lot of their stuff on EPs, which makes it hard to get hold of now. check out their version of 'my girl'. those Reid bros. love them.
Man, I'm so glad for youtube. In 1997, I scoured the web for the Mary Chain vid collection, 1985-1989. I found the VHS and it got sent to me, 4 months after I ordered it. I got a Japanese release. Now I don't have to risk getting the VHS stuck anymore. Thanks for the upload.
I think so, too. I like how each album sounds different. Before they could be dismissed as a gimmick band after Psychocandy, they come out with this album to prove otherwise.
Ahahaha yeh they do kill other bands when they are stealing guitar lines and putting them into very very very bad songs. The strokes are prety responsible for the state music is in at the miniute.

it seems that some folks just compare EVERYTHING to oasis. it makes the rest of us scratch our heads...
This is a pointless debate, I am sure Noel has bucket loads of respect for the Reid brothers but to compare the two bands is a waste of everybodys time. They both have their own take on pop music and both do it very well but to say that JandMC sound like Oasis is ridiculous. They couldn't sound more diffirent if the tried to, I mean, are your ears painted on or what?
I agree some way. Oasis is just a commercial version of them. Yeah, songwriting of Oasis is a bit different but main idea was similar (at first): mix guitar noise with pop melodies. Oasis became more and more commercial while Mary Chain didn`t want follow the marketing aspect.
Jesus & Mary Chain is original and others are just... yo know.

The most underrated band of all time must be Howard Devoto's Magazine. Fabulous songs and performances but the band split up early due to lack of financial success. There are several clips available on YouTube if you don't know Magazine and are interested.
Not a great message, but a very true testimonial I think. We feel like wanting to die several times maybe, but in the end, we don't want it for real. I've been there.
its a shame they made sure to mess up the live show this stuff is amazing...still everyone not in ownership of property in the area loves a good riot

Been a fan of theirs since I first heard their music. I can't believe they weren't a megaband in the U.S. They are extremely talented.

The Jesus & Mary Chain are probably the most underrated band of all time.

The most underrated band of all time must be Howard Devoto's Magazine. Fabulous songs and performances but the band split up early due to lack of financial success. There are several clips available on YouTube if you don't know Magazine and are interested.

this song has a great message don´t you think?
JEFPB 4 years ago
Not a great message, but a very true testimonial I think. We feel like wanting to die several times maybe, but in the end, we don't want it for real. I've been there.

so for me it´s a great message because tells that sometimes it´s so hard dealing with our own emotions....but life is a roller coaster darling...

This is oure music of the 80´s.The young people of today must be shamed in 20 years about there music.Todays music is only trivial or very agressive.
I´m glad to share my youth with such kind of music.
