  • agreed. long periods of cardio can create overproduction of cortisol which can lead to other health problems.

  • Hey steve quick question. I am not overweight. infact I weight about 10 pounds underweight than what I should be. Can I do HIIT right away for 10-15 minutes 3-4 times a day and expect results quicker ? or do I need to gradually move my way up. I dont excercise very often. I am just inspired to become more efficent in my body composition.

  • very good advice, thank you.

  • Currently I weigh 240 and stand at 5'10, i'm wondering, for a person who has a healthy heart, whats a good heart rate to maintain during a cardio workout? Mine tends to fluctuate between 140 - 210 while i'm on treadmill. I'm also 65 pounds overweight.

  • @azoreanblade2

it depends. find out your resting heart rate, then google heart rate equation/calculator whatever and then find your heart rate ranges.. typically, 120-140 is said to be optimum for aerobic conditioning, but thats only a guidline. work out your own ;)

(i realize that 5 months on, you probably have an answer :P just in case though!)

  • I'm overweight but it's only because I've been slacking. But I've been hitting the gym for about a month now and I've been wondering...Can I still lift heavy for muscle growth and do cardio for 30 minutes after for 4 days a week followed by a calorie deficient diet? I'm eating 5 meals a day. I get 150g of protein a day, 150-180g of carbs a day, and maybe 15g of fat a day.

  • Fell for these traps, i was losing weight and said "Heeyyy i haven't looked thin in a long time" so i started slacking and now it's "ahhh beer belly!!" Also i would do cardio every day for half an hour but now i get lazy to do it, then i say "i will make it up tomorrow" but now it's even longer so you don't want to do it. The hard part is getting on because after 10 minutes of warmup you are good to go, cutting it into smaller pieces makes sense if you have to

  • I'm quite overweight, and I started out slow - a 1km walk every evening, at a slow pace, with good shoes and taking care not to jar my knees too much. I also added regular swimming, which is no-impact and gets the heart rate up beautifully and is really fun. If you don't enjoy what you do, you'll get bored with it and I love swimming. It's my favorite. After about 3.5 weeks of that, I added some low-weight, high-rep lat machine work for my upper body. I feel great!

  • It helps that my fiance does this with me. He's a former Army combat engineer, and has guided me very carefully in this exercise thing so I don't burn out. He walks with me, occasionally swims with me, and LOVES free-weights. I also make breakfast THE biggest meal of my day, and I eat moderately at lunch and very little at dinner. Eating a huge meal at the end of the day is said to be a bad idea. I had an apple w/ peanut butter for lunch today. Yum!

  • I don't own a scale so I'm not sure if I've lost weight. People say I look different, and I even walk differently now. My stomach doesn't rub on the steering wheel of my car any more. I feel more energetic and stronger. So something must be going right. Soon I will buy a scale, and I'll have to take my measurements as well. Wish me luck. I'm not giving up.

  • *Patience* is key. One did not become overweight overnight. So one won't become slender overnight either. Also, know your numbers - cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, etc. Overall health is not just how much one weighs. Stay in touch with your doctor, get regular physicals, and eat right and remember to rest well too. I'm no expert, but this is what I've been doing and I SWEAR I feel a difference.

  • @norman5757 You're not burning 1200 calories running 3 miles. You MAY be burning 400.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV depends on how fast.....and intense cardio like running burnsover a period of time longer it

  • @norman5757 If it takes you 45 minutes to run 3 miles, you are probably burning like 300 calories at most

  • @norman5757 the tread mills exagerate on calories burned i also used to walk /jog for 3 1/2 miles for 45 minutes it would say i burned about 1000 calories my gym trainer told me it was wrong probably more like 300- 350 calories

  • @norman5757 That is hilarious - 45 minutes for 3 and 1/2 miles - i walk that in 50 LOL IM obese XD

  • I'm pretty big about football size I play sports ball hockey, basketball, baseball, and catch when I can 6 out of the seven nights a week I walk a mile or I run and walk a mile, but I see slight changes in my size even my Mom says I've slimmed down from the size I used to be but should I be doing more for example if I cant go out and run I usually do something like 2 sets of 30 squats with 3 sets of twenty jumping jacks, it goes JJ's, 10s rest, 30 S's, rest, 10 JJ's, 30 S's, 10 JJ's.

  • @pugzlie18 But what else can I do to slim down, when I run/jog and walk the distance I do I don't get sore or anything, because I do it every night and because I play running sports in a league. Question can I slim myself down quicker, and keep some of the traits I have such as wide shoulders and muscular thighs which help me in my sports, espicially because high school football tryouts are in 2 months and I injured myself because it wasnt something I was used to doing so that is why I run

  • @pugzlie18 Another thing is am I able to run and stuff and build muscle while doing it.

  • not have run for 20 + years and overweight , been weight training for 21/2 months and walking, now starting to run but joints hurt{ankles, knees, hips}any suggestions? { I can run a block and walk 1 or 2 and repeat my route is approx. 4.5 miles that I do 3 to 5 times a week} I will add that when I started I weighed 260 lbs and now down to 230lbs @5ft 10in

  • I didn't know that walks could make a difference. Now I know that my walking is not so useless ..lol just feels so sedentary for some reason

  • What about overweight people with limps? What kind of cardio should they be doing. What about when they reach a disired weight and they want to tone up, what safe toning exercise should they do if the walk with a limp. I'm only 21 and I have a condition with limping and mild backpain.

  • >Toning

  • This video offered a solution so simple, and he understands overweight people get discouraged easily.

    Great video.

  • That was the answer I have been looking for for a month now...lol...This is great. Thank You.

  • YW!

  • hey its me again steve

    I SO AGREE.

people might burnout their "traning happyness" as i call it when doing too hard workouts while i myself found out this IS NOT smart!

doing smaller ammount of cardio more frequently IS a better choice!

that is what i am doing today!

then you can gradually up the intencity as you become better and more available mentally and physically!

Good luck people. to me too.

  • ur cocky

  • Thx Steve ur a great motivator! I'm 5'4 was 263 lbs now I'm 255 lbs yea I lost 8 lbs. I been seeing ur videos and they are awsome. Thank you for teaching and sharing. I love my body!

  • Atlantabootcamp,...you are correct! Big time correct. Calorie counting is for the birds. The scale and waist measurement tell the real story. If they're not dropping, then you're not losing fat no matter how many calories you count or think you're consuming; and who could live long with that anyway. Long duration cardio....also long gone. Intervals are the way to go!!!! I also believe HIT lifting is the best as well. Low volume, few sets, few days, lots of rest, compound movements.

  • Long durations of cardio watching Tv and while doing cardio? Calorie counting? Are you kidding me? Wow there's way to much information that surpassed all of that madness. Get your butt out and work doing interval training and clean up what it is you're eating. Counting calories....so does this mean those 100 calories oreo snacks are good? it's 100 calories? Counting calories aren't the way to go and that's not a lifestyle you can live!

  • one thing did help me and it was counting protein .

as far as doing cardio goes i wouldt advice anyone to run or do anything for a long time that means its not challenging their body and it can really wear on the hardware (the body)

  • I hate to be general but it does depend on how old you are and how much you weigh. But looking in the mirror is sometimes the best indicator. Listen to my seminar on my main page. It's Free!

  • how do i know if im overweight?? or just right for my age?

  • you gotta find out what your BMi is find out what your height and weight is then go on a site that will tell your BMi.

  • just so you know, steve said the BMi thing is totall bull. he said that because it doesn't take into account your muscle mass

  • Check your body fat %. Most gyms will have some sort of test.

  • my body whatever junkfood i eat or i eat alot my body never changes into fat why ?

well i have stomach fatt iregular and flat sotmach but not abs what would i do my chest is good but my stomach is not good. once i eat my stomach gets bigger and then i burn the fat each time i eat is it ok ?

  • Keep up the good work!

  • I find it difficult and boring to be staring at a wall or just listening to music while doing my 40 min cardio, so what I do nowadays is to put a DVD of a serie that I like, for example: Desperate Housewives, Gilmore girls and watch a whole episode which is approx 42 min duration. Results: I don't get bored and time flies! I am doing this for some time now and I think this has been helpful! Thanks for your videos Steve!

  • Your cardio is fine BUT you'll need to cut your calorie intake for weight loss to occur more efficiently and quickly. Cut your meal sizes by 1/3. This help immensely.

  • hi,

i am heavy and do cardio 5-6 times a week for 40-60 minutes every day. i cant take out time for short 10-15 minutes excercises as my Job does not permit me. any reccomendations?

  • Jason thank you much for your compliments. I too have a background in biology & chemistry so thinking like a scientist definitely helps. I'm sick of the misinformation put out by companies & idiots that many times I have to remind myself to smile during my videos! I'm relaunching my site at the start of April. I'm going to start charging $20/month for unlimited audio answers to questions. When this hapens i will no longer be answering questions on You Tube. Please tell your friends!

  • Hi Steve,

I was a Bio Major/psych minor in college. I would like to thank you twice:

First as a biologist I want to say thanks for the clearest most concise, most accurate information that none of us paid a cent for. We all owe you! Write a book i can buy or something!

Second, as a psychologist thank you for your "cut the crap" attitude. Your polite and respectful but with zero tolerance for laziness - I love it. As long as you're around, I'm going to listen.

    Jason - upstate NY

  • Thanks!

  • Steve - I just came upon your videos...information is excellent and your no-nonsense style is great! Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks!

  • thanks u r the best.

  • Great work Steve! Hats off to you

  • Yes, you can do it. REMEMBER, the results are cumulative. It doesn't happen in one day. It's DAY AFTER DAY!!! Just don't quite. ~Steve

  • YAY! this is the EXACT information i was looking for!!! doing cardio for 30-40 min straight when i am 5'4" at 178 lbs is impossible for me in my current state. hearing you say that it is possible to still have results even if the workouts are shorter makes it seem like getting in shape is not just for those who already have normal bods.

  • very helpful

  • Thanks a lot for the videos. Walking is also working for me. I actually feel that running is not that hard for my knees anymore, so I'll start jogging.

    Thanks again:=)

  • what workout tapes like turbojam or taibo

and if you find out just hit the reply button.

  • I just started working at ups moving packages so i started a diet plan to go with it.I am too big too run so i am walking and starting slow doing what i can. its been 2 weeks and im losing weight i can already tell. when i lose alot of weight i will put up some before and after pictures. my first goal is be able to weight myself on a scale seeing as i way somewhere between 350 and 380. i love watching your videos and keep them coming.

  • I sure will. Keep up the good work.

  • i just weighed myself and im weighing 325 now. im thinking about blogging it on youtube like other ppl

  • y have i not seen any recent videos on the website

  • We're redesigning the site and will post the last videos on it once we relaunch in January!

  • Sure!

  • is it ok if I do cardio twice a week but

    lift weights everyday.

  • gonna do it then :)

  • hey steve what's the difference of burning calories from burning fats?tnx!

  • Calories can come from fats, carbs and proteins. Your body burns all three of these types of calories (depending on your activity and food intake) but prefers to burn carbs for fuel, then fats, then proteins.

  • thats muscle not fat

  • That's not fat, jackass.

  • hey i need some advice i started doing cardio today and i think i weigh around 300lbs and got a bad/bowe leg and the cardio i think is 45 minutes and planned on doing it 5 times a week, i was wondering what else/exercises i should be doing when im done with the cardio work out to increase my chance at weight loss?

  • Good advice.

  • Thank you!

  • The best things about your video, is how well explained they are, and just how much you know and also "Love your body" haha :P I just love how you say that, it makes me watch the video to the very end just to hear it :P

  • you do a good job steve

    thank you

  • Thank you so much for the videos...i just started doing cardio after a long period of doing nothing and definitely needed the help. I am gradually working up to running a mile even though I can walk for days....My lungs are what need the workout right now.

  • 30-40 minutes will work but it will take a bit longer for somebody to lose large amounts of weight. But you're right. The longer (and harder) you train the faster it will happen.

  • I actually started out with just 15 minutes then moved on up to 20, 25 then 30.

The bottom line is, don't play by the rules. 30-40 minutes won't cut it if you weigh in at around 300 lbs. I think those that came up with that canned answer are out of touch with what people actually NEED.

  • Hi Steve..

I'm Andres from Monterrrey Mexico ...

    Got some Q's ...

    1. Does wearing a Sauna Belt help to lose FAT ?

    2. Does the Calories that you burn on the eliptical are real ? - you know ... some ones says you burn like 600 in 35 min some others you burn 450 in 35 min ...

    Thanks ... Love Your Body !! ...

  • 1. No. It just causes water loss.

    2. That seems a bit high. Walking at 4 miles an hour for 15 minutes almost burns 100 calories so you can use that as a guide. Depending on how hard and fast you use the elliptical I would guess you're not burning much more than 250-300 calories per 30 minutes.

  • You'd hate to sit in the cubicle next to the "very heavy" person who goes for a 15 minute walk 3 times a day.

By the end of the day, with the environs reeking of BO, you'd be looking to go for a walk and never come back.

  • Thanks steve!!

  • You're welcome!

  • I would add to make sure and use good shoes with support for your ankles. The quickest way to quit is to strain or twist an ankle...

  • The master has spoken !! Thanks Steve.

  • Thank you!

  • youre looking a bit leaner steve.

  • Good observation. Doing a bit more cardio and watching my fat in-take. You should see me without a shirt now!

  • Great advice Steve! I just started back working out after gaining more weight than I would like to mention...and it has been very hard

  • *continued*

And it has been very hard for me to get through my workout, but I will try your advice it sounds great!

    Thank you so much

  • It usually is that's why I don't normally take time off. But don't worry, it will get easier.

  • Great advice, love it, I think almost every adult I know or have known has started an exercise regime at some point and then quit, I myself have been through my own ups and downs. Over the last couple of months I just cut my calories to about 2400/day and ate whatever I wanted as long as the I didnt go over my calorie limit each day. On top of that I started walking 4/5 X's a week for 30 mins or so and so far I have lost 6.1 kilos. Working like a charm. My goal is just a flat stomoch.

  • Sounds like you're on your way there. Time, effort, consistency and faith!

  • He does make good sense I lift heavy weights but mostly I do cardio Steve keep up the good job man

  • Thank you!

  • will you please answer this? Why don't you have a youtube video to help people who are underweight who struggle to put on weight?

  • umm...only one way to do that.

EAAATTT TILL YOUR BLUE IN THE FACE

    then eat some more..every...single...day

There isn't a video on it because the answer is just so simple. Carbs are your best friend, eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in sight!

  • I disagree, eating anything, especially highly modified food to a point of containing almost no nutritional value but sugar and trans-fats (evil, makes saturated look as good for you as Steve is..I no I'm kissing his ass) is going to bounce badly on someone's waist line. I think what Jda4160 is asking Steve how can he put wait on that is good for him - mainly muscle. I've seen a TV series where they actually show that even someone thin who is trying to put on weight can still have a high fat...

  • (Oh my god..just realized that I've made a few grammar errors...sorry. 'no' should be know and 'wait' should be weight. Anyway...)

...ratio but low muscle percentage to BMI. This is quite a strange phenomenon to our health. Personally what someone should do is have a healthy diet and to eat more things like Chicken, Beef and Eggs during their meals as these contain more good calories to help the body put on healthy weight....

  • I think Steve and BottomContributor both make excellent points. What may work for BottomContributor may not work for others. It happens to be that I am doing is similar to what BottomContributor has done. The issues I am having now is anxiety, boredom, depressions, school, work, etc.

  • If you're having problems with anxiety and depression, I suggest the book called "Feeling Good" by Dr. David Burns. Don't skip doing the exercises because they are what will change you.

  • I don't know if I completely agree. I was 310 pounds and have gone to 235. This method would require a lot of discipline to do. What worked for me was to set myself a time when I HAD TO work out. I didn't question it. I just did it, and I promised myself to do it for at least 2 months. Then after each workout, I would reward myself with something (like a diet soda).

  • Another fantastic motivating/informational video! Thanks!

  • My pleasure.

  • Good Info

  • Ellipticals worked for me. It took a few times to get use to it, but eventually I got up to the highest resistance and now I can do it the whole workout.

The best I ever did was an hour straight for 3 days in a row. I only got about 1000 the first day 1200 the second then I went past the hour the 3rd and got 1700. I was shooting for 2000 just to do an even 2000, but my lower back starting having sharp unbearable pains.

Now I do 30 minutes on them. Ranging from 500 to 800 depending on my mood.

  • It's funny Steve, now that I watch the video again... I understand why I end up failing each season I get back into working out. I try to go all out. It works sometimes, but I never stay with it for more than a month.

I'm going to use your advice next time damnit lol. It's silly too because I thought of this strategy myself a while back. I mean it makes perfect sense.

Anyways thanks for the great advice as usual, Steve :)

  • My pleasure. Glad to help.

  • I get those sharp lower back pains too. I think the problem you're having is that you keep shooting yourself for more and more as if you had to up it to convince yourself you're losing weight. My suggestion is put yourself a minimum of 600 calories but a maximum of 800 calories. If you keep this, you can't fail. My elliptical has a workout plan of 45 minutes and tells me when I'm falling back of speed. I do this only. I try to ignore calories and I don't up myself to prove anything.

  • Yeah, you're right. It's just I'm getting older now and I think mentally I was trying to prove something. See, I used to be a competitive athlete back in the day. Lots of things changed for the worse so it was probably me just trying to prove something to myself.

lol but you know though.. sometimes I get to listening to this inspirational training music and it just takes over. I'll try to use my brain more often. Thanks guys.

  • Calories, right?

  • Excellent!

  • Thanks!
