I have 2 questions: 1) Can you comb your hair with henna in it? I heard you shouldn't do that, but I am not sure. 2) Is it safe to apply indigo after a henna treatment if you are not satisfied with the color results from the henna?
@Timisloved It's best to work the henna into your hair by hand and let it sit while the dye acts on the hair. Applying indigo after a henna treatment will darken the color into the deep reddish browns to black.
@beautysham The color you get depends partly on the initial color of your hair. If you have brown hair, henna will give it a dark reddish tone. You can darken the color by applying indigo after the henna treatment.

OK, so I'm a little skeptic, but I tried the henna with indigo mix (ring of gray around my head). Did the mix with aloe vera juice and a very small amount of vinegar. Did the wash with my homemade black soap and aloe vera juice shampoo. If I didn't know it was my own head, I wouldn't have believed it was my hair! Hair sparkly and 2-stranded twists bouncing all over my head! I'm converted--I'm "henna-head!"
Hi there im "Confused" can someone tell me "black henna".? Henna is never black, henna never dyes hair black, but powdered indigo resembles powdered henna and it DOES dye hair black. So, when indigo was sold as hair dye, it was called "black henna".? Some boxes of "black henna" are real indigo? Do you need to mix both Henna and Indigo to DYE HAIR BLACK
@SoundOut260 Genuine henna comes in only one color, a brownish red. So-called "black henna" usually contains other dyes and might include PPD, which is suspected of causing allergies and other adverse reactions. Indigo by itself is not usable as a hair dye, but when used in combination with henna can dye hair colors ranging from dark brown to black.

i have done it before and i want to dye my hair but i want to use something that is natural. this is the first place where most muslims go to dye their hair (such as myself) :)
@m4unot We don't comment on specific brands of hair care products. What we can tell you is that pure henna, prepared as you see in the video, can be used on relaxed hair. Components of the henna will bind to the hair and make it appear fuller and the dye in the henna will give you reddish highlights.

hello, another question. I seen in my local BSS powered Henna brand name Colora do you recommend using it. I've reading about the metalic stuff that's in certain Hennas. I checked the website. Henna for hair dot com, I didn't see that particular brand there. to see what it looks like go to: naturally direct (dot) com. Let me know if it's a good henna to use.
@trecey920 We don't comment on specific brands of packaged henna, partly because it's often difficult or impossible to be sure what's in the package. DRASTIC measure demand DRASTIC actions. Me personally had to do henna every week til i got my hair Soft.. because these bs perms, doo grow this and that is bs. So i been adding stuff to my treatments and i must say it is fun to mix it up. I say do what is best for you. Do your henna hair still nappy do it again. its natural.. try mayonaise/eggs that helps too but stinks watch out for salmanella.. Lol henny is the best.. use some olive oil or coconut oil.
henna can sometimes leave a build up on relaxed hair...and make it harder to receive a relaxer later on ....it's great for natural and very thin hair....
@JustMyShows Henna is most effective in a mildly acidic mix. The pH of lemon juice varies between 2.5 and 3, which is the same acidity as apple cider vinegar, which many people use as the basis of a hair rinse. Some people are sensitive to lemon juice. They can substitute other fruit juices, such as apple juice.
lemon juice is not good for our hair i ment to say it has too low of a ph level also just becuase many people use apple cider vinegar in there hair doesn't mean its healthy!! our hair is 4.5 to 5.5 so lemon juice AND apple cider vinegar is bad for hair!!
@JustMyShows We're aware that some people believe that lemon juice is bad for their hair but we've never seen any valid study to support the claim. However, we make it clear to everyone who asks that any mildly acidic liquid can be used in the henna mix , such as apple juice as we noted in the previous post.
@AKIYIAKELLY What we recommend is that you buy a good quality finely ground henna containing no additives. Jamila, an import from Pakistan is one of the most widely sold and trusted hennas. We use it ourselves and can recommend it.
@AKIYIAKELLY Jamila is widely sold. You can find sellers by searching for jJamila on Google or you can get Jamila from us. Call 330 689 0725 to talk to one of our staff.
yep destinyrlyf ur ryt...in places liek east africa hair varies from silky straight to curly to kinky..even in my own family there r different textures n we're all from 1 country..i have afro/curly hair n my older sister has naturally dark silky straght hair that is wavy at da bottom..she is not mixed 4 any ignorant ppl out der my grandmas hair is da same n she isn't mixed either.....
okay. what do you mean when you say a body art quality henna? is that a name brand or do you mean henna that was made for tattooing?
in addition, i was reading on your site how it relaxes the curl pattern of african textured hair. i have no relaxer and am natural. i am curious about this. is that effect short term or is it long term? and you also say to test a strand of hair. how do you do that. mix a batch and let it sit and take a little and use it for a test run int he meantime?
@iroc31407 "Body art quality" or "BAQ" is a generic term for henna that is finely sifted and has good staining power. We recommend BAQ henna for dyeing hair because of the good color and because the paste is easier to rinse out.
The proteins in henna bind with the proteins in your hair, henna treatment will make your hair fuller and richer looking, and will tend to loosen the curl.
To test your hair, collect hair from your brush and try one of the mixes and directions from our site.
@hennapage okay. thanks for the information. I tried to do henna. i have natural african textured hair. It did not loosen my curls and I didn't get any color. Mixed it with lemon juice. followed the directions to a T. It was very hard to rinse out and It made my thick and kinky hair even more difficult to deal with. What do you recommend?
@2blackqueens1 We've seen it done both ways and, as far as we can tell, there's no difference. We recommend carefully washing your hair first if you want to apply henna after relaxing it to remove any residual chemicals.
If you have jet black hair and decide to use henna, would the lemon juice brighten it more to give you a brighter tint of red or is the juice just used to help strain the dye out more?
@mschocolatte06 Henna works best in a mildly acidic mix. We normally use lemon juice to make the paste but other fruitjuices, such as apple juice, will work as well. The color effect in your hair comes from the henna itself. In your case, henna won't lighten your hair or change its basic color but it will give you reddish highlights.
@Diamond52894 also, what if you want to go darker? I have nearly black hair (it looks dark brown in the sun), and i think going darker would compliment me more...
I have a question. Will one be able to relax hair afterwards if amla is added to the mix? I am aware that the hair can still be safely relaxed before and after a Henna treatment, but how about with amla or other powders? Will those have any negating effects that you're aware of?
@platedplate Amla contains an organic acid that alters the texture of the hair. Depending on your natural texture, it will make it "fluffy" or make it curly. If you intend to relax your hair, it's best to start without having to counteract the effect of amla.
@2000kiowa You'll get brown tones by using henna and indigo. If you e-mail a picture of your hair to helpdesk-at-mehandi-dot-com along with a description of the results you're looking for, one of our associates will respond with suggestions on what proportions of henna and indigo to use.
@kaliyuta Any mildly acidic liquid is all you need to mix henna for dyeing your hair. We recommend lemon juice, but some people are sensitive to lemon juice and prefer apple juice.
Henna is actually a dye used for temporary tattoos in India..but it can be used in hair as well. Good for damaged hair because of its conditioning agents
Question... what, if any, are the benefits of sitting under a hood dryer with henna? I have just applied medium brown henna with lemon juice only to my hair and am under my portable dryer. It's just now going on 45 minutes. I planned to do 1 hour under the dryer and 1 hour doing chores around the house, then rinse. I'm trying to speed up the with drying process as well as enhance the deep conditioning aspect by using heat. Do you have any advice for me? Many thanks for your professional advice!
@MlleCECJ We know a few people who use a portable dryer as you do. As far as we know, it does speed up the process a little because heat can help with the dyeing process.
@kaliyuta doesn't everyone who has chemical free hair have "naturally textured" hair? and since we are all of some ethnicity, don't we all have have ethnic hair, no matter its texture, straight, curly, or in between. Those terms are so nebulous. I agree with FikiNom, African is not a bad word and it is perfectly reasonable way to describe the hair of the people. Black folks, need to stop searching for new terms for their hair and love it as it is.
@rainey53 You clearly are for whatever reason looking to pick a fight with me over terminology.Based on the randomness, and frankly out of nowhere form of an attack i would say it is dead obvious you are looking to start a fight and i think that's sad.
@kaliyuta I wasn't trying to "pick a fight" with you. Your original comment addressed the semantics of ethnic/african american hair and I merely countered your argument with a rebuttal. My comment was in no means meant to be antagonistic. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing and if you are going to pose a discussion about terminology then expect that someone is going to respond with a comment about terminology. From what I can see, I wasn't the only person that disagreed with your assessment.
@rainey53 In a round about way you're being typical and implying racism. You know it and i know it.You were implying that i was being racist by my post on the terminology Interesting how you're so quick to take offense and play the race card where it's not even necessary.I bet if i were on an Indian henna page this type of dialogue wouldn't even occur.
@kaliyuta Anyone who does not alter the texture of their hair has "naturally textured" hair even those with almost straight hair. Also, ethnic hair? I do not like this term. There are various ethnicities and hair texture varies between them but also within them, so why is African hair considered ethnic? Is European hair considered as non-ethnic hair? European is an ethnicity. Ethnicity is supposed to mean one's culture and race. I though everyone had that, not only Africans/ African Americans.
i didnt know u can henna your hair what is it good for because i used have relaxer in my hair but i grow it out because it fall out because of split ends, now am natural
@xhotgyalx1 Henna is a natural plant-based dye that will add reddish hghlights to your hair and it contains proteins that bind to your hair and improve its condition and appearance, including repairing split ends.
how can you use henna on asian hair to make it the deep gorgeous red auburn? do you have to lighten it first? and if you do lighten it, will it react weird with teh henna?
@SterlingStar12 You can use henna exactly as you see it used in the "African Hair" video and with similar results. If your hair is naturally dark brown, henna won't lighten it but will give it reddish-brown highlights.
Question, Can you do a henna treatment soon after relaxing? If not how long should it be between the two. I have heard to wait two weeks after relaxing to do a henna treatment.
Henna works as well on relaxed hair as it does on untreated hair. However, we always advise that first-time users test the henna mix on a hair sample before going ahead with the full dyeing process.
Thank you for the amazing henna information. African Americans have no monopoly on African hair. Thank you for taking your time to educate us. I got some henna from the Indian store and am getting ready to order some indigo from yourselves. Exciting *claps hands*
Why does everyone stereotype African hair as KINKY NAPPY OR TIGHTLY COILED??? The country where I am from the hair varies from wavy, straight, silk straight, or very lose coiled. Africa is very diverse and is beyond kinky. EXPLORE AFRICA :)
We used the word "African" because we believed it was less likely to be viewed as demeaning, as we believe "kinky" or "nappy" would have been. We are fully aware that African peoples encompass a wide range of hair types, as well as skin and eye color, but we used the word "African" to make our potential African-American clients aware that we can provide for them care for their special hair needs as well as for our customer of other races and ethnicities.
Dont pay these confused people no mind. If you have afro textured hair then you have African hair simple and klaar! I hate it when people try to make like African is a demeaning word. If you have an identity crisis that is your own problem but if you are black you aint European or in the middle or however else you wish to be viewed. You are African - even if your ancestors left the continent in the 17th century. Black people WORLDWIDE lets get it together!
@Destinay4lyf well said ppl r so damn ignorant even though my hair is 'kinky' but every 1 texture CAN b different jheez. PPL still think AFRICA is a country.
@Destinay4lyf ummm...maybe their hair varies because they are not full african!!! A full african woman's hair would be KINKY NAPPY OR TIGHTLY COILED!!
@dancehAll914 WTF!!! Do you know how ignorant you sound? I probably have more African blood in me than half of the African American population here. I have very soft curls and the country where I am from women sometimes have pin straight natural hair. Its so sad that you have that mentality.
@Destinay4lyf ha! your so retarded i'm from the carribean and everyone here knows that you can only have PIN STRAIGHT hair if you are not full african
@dancehAll914 ... Africa is diverse. Don't jump to conclusions without research. Hair textures in Africa range from tightly coiled to wavy to everything in-between.
@Destinay4lyf Ahhh! I could KISS you for that comment! I told this one jerk about some of our other hair textures and he was all like "Those countries were mixed with white and asian, so they're not technically black even if they are in Africa." I swear.... Im about to screenshot that crap and post it up in a youtube video lmao
@Dark0Malkavian lol. some people are just ignorant. instead of them taking to correction, they just stay stubborn.4 example I'm nigerian, n nigerians r know to have the thickest, nappy hair in africa but as for myself I have very soft curls n all my other family members have thick nappy coils. (nappy is good lol), no one has pin straight hair even caucasians, asians and europeans have some nappiness to them (frizzy, shrinkage etc)
Henna binds to keratin, a protein that is an important component of hair and can improve the appearance and texture of any hair, including hair that's been chemically relaxed.
Hello, very good video. I have a question. I know you were saying henna does not change your hair, but on a henna website it stated if you add half henna half indigo it would give you a brown. And i heard people adding paprika ....Is that just for european hair..,not african american hair? Thanks
The outcome depends on the initial color of your hair as well as the proportions of indigo to henna. If you call our Help Desk at 330-673-0600, one of our staff will be happy to talk to you and make suggestions.
We're not aware of any risks from hennaing your hair while breastfeeding, but it's always best to check with your medical professional where your baby's health in concerned.
I have a couple of questions, first can I henna soon after dying my hair with a commercial product, i.e. Clarol Natural Instints. Two, instead of using indigo to darken my gray hair, can I add amla powder to the henna paste instead to make the highlights I guess more reddish-brown. Your video provides great information. Thanks!
I have a container of Neha Herbal, but i'm afraid to use it b/c it does not specifically say "body art quality" on the package. I have african american hair. Is it safe to use it or do i need to purchase a different brand? Thanks....
We can't comment on commercial hennas because we can never be certain what's in the package. We recommend you buy your henna from us or from another dealer who sells only pure henna with no adulterants.
I am by no means an expert on Henna. I used store bought Henna years ago and learned the hard way that whatever I bought was NOT good for my hair. My hair was unhealthy for months and had some breakage. I'm now ready to try Henna again because I have since learned that if you buy good quality (Body Art Quality) Henna, you should be okay. The lower quality Henna may have chemicals, ammonia, etc. that don't work well with whatever you already have in your hair. So be careful.
Hello, I hae a box of body art henna, it says no chemicals pure henna, I was wondering since my hair is black how will it change my hair color. I just looking to use henna to strenghthen my hair. This henna I have smells like grass.
Henna won't lighten your hair but it will add reddish highlights, especially toward the ends. It will also bind to the keratin in your hair and make it stronger and appear thicker.
I actually live about an hour away from your store(CLE) I have used henna once before about 4 mo ago and got ok results(I think my friend didnt do it right) I was wondering what is the brightest red I can get with my reddish brown and dark brown hair and if your African Hair Henna is for me?
PS
I have wavy hair in the front, very curly hair in the middle(2/3 B) and straight hair in the back and no chemicals.
Henna doesn't usually change your hair color that much, it enhances and brings out your natural hair color. Usually if you want to keep your hair as natural looking as possible try using a bit of indigo or black tea in your mix.
@hennapage is it okay to us 100% lemon juice from concentrate?

So i been adding stuff to my treatments and i must say it is fun to mix it up. I say do what is best for you. Do your henna hair still nappy do it again. its natural.. try mayonaise/eggs that helps too but stinks watch out for salmanella.. Lol henny is the best.. use some olive oil or coconut oil.

henna can sometimes leave a build up on relaxed hair...and make it harder to receive a relaxer later on ....it's great for natural and very thin hair....

how is this good for your hair when lemon juice is not!?!!? Lemon juce has a really high Ph level too much for our hair!!!
JustMyShows 1 year ago
@JustMyShows Henna is most effective in a mildly acidic mix. The pH of lemon juice varies between 2.5 and 3, which is the same acidity as apple cider vinegar, which many people use as the basis of a hair rinse. Some people are sensitive to lemon juice. They can substitute other fruit juices, such as apple juice.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage
lemon juice is not good for our hair i ment to say it has too low of a ph level also just becuase many people use apple cider vinegar in there hair doesn't mean its healthy!! our hair is 4.5 to 5.5 so lemon juice AND apple cider vinegar is bad for hair!!
JustMyShows 1 year ago
@JustMyShows We're aware that some people believe that lemon juice is bad for their hair but we've never seen any valid study to support the claim. However, we make it clear to everyone who asks that any mildly acidic liquid can be used in the henna mix , such as apple juice as we noted in the previous post.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage
I know that lemon juice is extremely acidic, and when applied to the hair it can be damaging. (since our hair is stable at a pH balance of 4.4 to 5).

okay. what do you mean when you say a body art quality henna? is that a name brand or do you mean henna that was made for tattooing?
in addition, i was reading on your site how it relaxes the curl pattern of african textured hair. i have no relaxer and am natural. i am curious about this. is that effect short term or is it long term? and you also say to test a strand of hair. how do you do that. mix a batch and let it sit and take a little and use it for a test run int he meantime?
iroc31407 1 year ago
@iroc31407 "Body art quality" or "BAQ" is a generic term for henna that is finely sifted and has good staining power. We recommend BAQ henna for dyeing hair because of the good color and because the paste is easier to rinse out.
The proteins in henna bind with the proteins in your hair, henna treatment will make your hair fuller and richer looking, and will tend to loosen the curl.
To test your hair, collect hair from your brush and try one of the mixes and directions from our site.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage okay. thanks for the information. I tried to do henna. i have natural african textured hair. It did not loosen my curls and I didn't get any color. Mixed it with lemon juice. followed the directions to a T. It was very hard to rinse out and It made my thick and kinky hair even more difficult to deal with. What do you recommend?
iroc31407 1 year ago
is it best to do the henna treatment after a relaxer or before?
2blackqueens1 1 year ago
@2blackqueens1 We've seen it done both ways and, as far as we can tell, there's no difference. We recommend carefully washing your hair first if you want to apply henna after relaxing it to remove any residual chemicals.
hennapage 1 year ago
If you have jet black hair and decide to use henna, would the lemon juice brighten it more to give you a brighter tint of red or is the juice just used to help strain the dye out more?
mschocolatte06 1 year ago
@mschocolatte06 Henna won't lighten naturally black hair but it will give your hair reddish highlights.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage Ohh okay, thank you very much for your response :)
mschocolatte06 1 year ago
@mschocolatte06 Henna works best in a mildly acidic mix. We normally use lemon juice to make the paste but other fruitjuices, such as apple juice, will work as well. The color effect in your hair comes from the henna itself. In your case, henna won't lighten your hair or change its basic color but it will give you reddish highlights.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage would it be noticeable highlights or would it only be noticeable in light?

I have a question. Will one be able to relax hair afterwards if amla is added to the mix? I am aware that the hair can still be safely relaxed before and after a Henna treatment, but how about with amla or other powders? Will those have any negating effects that you're aware of?
platedplate 1 year ago
@platedplate If you plan to relax your hair, we recommend you not use amla in the mix.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage
Thank you for your response. Is there a reason?
platedplate 1 year ago
@platedplate Amla contains an organic acid that alters the texture of the hair. Depending on your natural texture, it will make it "fluffy" or make it curly. If you intend to relax your hair, it's best to start without having to counteract the effect of amla.
hennapage 1 year ago
@hennapage
Ah yes, it has been previously relaxed, but I do intend to do touch up in the future. Still no? Is it the same for Shikakai?

Henna is actually a dye used for temporary tattoos in India..but it can be used in hair as well. Good for damaged hair because of its conditioning agents
00treasure00 1 year ago
Question... what, if any, are the benefits of sitting under a hood dryer with henna? I have just applied medium brown henna with lemon juice only to my hair and am under my portable dryer. It's just now going on 45 minutes. I planned to do 1 hour under the dryer and 1 hour doing chores around the house, then rinse. I'm trying to speed up the with drying process as well as enhance the deep conditioning aspect by using heat. Do you have any advice for me? Many thanks for your professional advice!

@MlleCECJ We know a few people who use a portable dryer as you do. As far as we know, it does speed up the process a little because heat can help with the dyeing process.

I hate to sound to pc guys but "African" hair?
In the hair industry we call it naturally textured or ethnic hair.
kaliyuta 1 year ago
@kaliyuta doesn't everyone who has chemical free hair have "naturally textured" hair? and since we are all of some ethnicity, don't we all have have ethnic hair, no matter its texture, straight, curly, or in between. Those terms are so nebulous. I agree with FikiNom, African is not a bad word and it is perfectly reasonable way to describe the hair of the people. Black folks, need to stop searching for new terms for their hair and love it as it is.
rainey53 1 year ago
@rainey53 You clearly are for whatever reason looking to pick a fight with me over terminology.Based on the randomness, and frankly out of nowhere form of an attack i would say it is dead obvious you are looking to start a fight and i think that's sad.
kaliyuta 9 months ago
@kaliyuta I wasn't trying to "pick a fight" with you. Your original comment addressed the semantics of ethnic/african american hair and I merely countered your argument with a rebuttal. My comment was in no means meant to be antagonistic. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing and if you are going to pose a discussion about terminology then expect that someone is going to respond with a comment about terminology. From what I can see, I wasn't the only person that disagreed with your assessment.
rainey53 9 months ago
@rainey53 In a round about way you're being typical and implying racism. You know it and i know it.You were implying that i was being racist by my post on the terminology Interesting how you're so quick to take offense and play the race card where it's not even necessary.I bet if i were on an Indian henna page this type of dialogue wouldn't even occur.
kaliyuta 9 months ago
@rainey53 amen!
FikiNom 8 months ago
@kaliyuta and besides, the model in this video is not naturally textured, she has a relaxer but she still has African/African American hair.
rainey53 1 year ago
@kaliyuta Anyone who does not alter the texture of their hair has "naturally textured" hair even those with almost straight hair. Also, ethnic hair? I do not like this term. There are various ethnicities and hair texture varies between them but also within them, so why is African hair considered ethnic? Is European hair considered as non-ethnic hair? European is an ethnicity. Ethnicity is supposed to mean one's culture and race. I though everyone had that, not only Africans/ African Americans.

Destinay4lyf 1 year ago 46
We used the word "African" because we believed it was less likely to be viewed as demeaning, as we believe "kinky" or "nappy" would have been. We are fully aware that African peoples encompass a wide range of hair types, as well as skin and eye color, but we used the word "African" to make our potential African-American clients aware that we can provide for them care for their special hair needs as well as for our customer of other races and ethnicities.
hennapage 1 year ago 2
Dont pay these confused people no mind. If you have afro textured hair then you have African hair simple and klaar! I hate it when people try to make like African is a demeaning word. If you have an identity crisis that is your own problem but if you are black you aint European or in the middle or however else you wish to be viewed. You are African - even if your ancestors left the continent in the 17th century. Black people WORLDWIDE lets get it together!

Henna binds to keratin, a protein that is an important component of hair and can improve the appearance and texture of any hair, including hair that's been chemically relaxed.

Thanks!
dish9901 2 years ago
You can use henna on hair that's been chemically dyed. Amla only darkens the combination of henna and indigo.

Henna doesn't usually change your hair color that much, it enhances and brings out your natural hair color. Usually if you want to keep your hair as natural looking as possible try using a bit of indigo or black tea in your mix.
