He's been known for being very rude with reporters and that's why a lot of his work has escaped media exposure. His books on how brain makes consciousness are ground breaking. Too bad that they are difficult for those not familiar with the terminology.
His importance has already been felt in the field of immunology where he got his Nobel price.
He'd deserve another one for his work in modeling consciousness in machine medium.
Edelman is not underappreciated. He is a prominent neuroscientist and Nobel laureate. His ideas are well known among all contemporary neuroscientists. He is quite famous in the field.
Edelman has the key to understanding how our brains works. You must read his works on the Brain Based Devices, the articles are free. Edelman will be gone soon but what his intellectual legacy is the path to follow. Unique.
I just noticed that youtube is fiiiiinally using compound tags. I wanna say that's genius, but why did it take so long? I mean, I spent all those years watching videos that had some random association with the word "Gerald." Hmph.
It was really interesting when he was talking about how brains thrive in an environment of ambiguity, and mathematics is sort of a construct on top of that... whereas for a computer mathematics is the base, and ambiguity is very hard to program into it.
@Gesmehod before actually getting into psychology classes at my junior college, I wanted to integrate my studies/research of Computers and the Human Mind - applying the lessons of self-reflection and studying all parts of a computer (mostly software) to show everyone how the Internet and Computers are external "things" that can teach us a great deal about our minds! I just thought it was cool to find someone commenting and making the same realization (the reflection of the mind-computer).
So he does not believe in Allah-The God or the afterlife, ok, I guess he wil soon find out judging from his age. Why did he not talk about the relationship between the 'brain' and the 'heart'., he refered to the 'body' instead. I heard that the heart can 'influence' or 'communicate' with the brain rather than the opposite. I am coming from a religious point of view. A good heart verus a bad one. Is there any videos or aritcles of this topic.
@aaaaaaac1 a good heart is necessary for good blood flow, and of course the heart is connected to the brain, so is every other organ. And if he discussed religion i would have been shocked, he is a doctor, most doctors are grown up -)
@aaaaaaac1 There's a thing called the vagus nerve that controls reflexes such as the heart beat. But it connects to other organs too. The heart is just a pump so it can't have any 'true' communication with the brain. The heart doesn't tell the brain that it is feeling an emotion. The brain tells the heart to react to the emotion.
There is undoubtedly more research out there waiting for your fingertips to do the typing, but that was what I was able to come up with in a quick search. The internet is a wide world of knowledge, awaiting for you to query the vast databases, the only thing you need to do is make an attempt to find the credible sources (on any subject matter.)
Boring......not good at maths...unfortunatly his worlds have no meaning to me.....reply to what you want.

So inspiring! Check out Edelman "Second Nature" book, an amazing synthesis of his reflections on brain and mind.

This man is well into his 80's. After seeing this, I consider his mind being 10 times more sharp than your average 20-year old's. Amazing.

About mental rotation, wouldn't the newer Asimos have to be able to do that now? See this link:

Excellent !!!
Edelman is likely the most under appreciated scientist of our time.
If you have the date of the interview and interviewer's name, please post in the description. Thanks for the upload !!!
