Very bad animation. When Wagner lived in our days he should make a very better one in Hollywood. It was Wieland Wagner who said in 1966 - short before he died - to Antoine Golea: "When my grandfather lived now he should work in Hollywood".
1st act, Gurnemanz did NOT 'rebuke' the lad; he carefully leads Parsifal (not yet named) through his action of thoughtlessly killing an innocent being (swan: symbol of fidelity).
2nd act, Klingsor (aka, guilty conscience) is NOT the master of Kundry (aka, fact & logic). When he claims to be so, she sends him into self-reproach!
3rd act, Amfortas (aka, unproven religious ardor) NEVER handles the spear again. Kundry 'dies' because the rest is myth!
About as superficial a synopsis as I've ever encountered. But amusingly Monty Pythonesque, I suppose. By the way, why doesn't the narrator pronounce Amfortas properly, with the stress on the second syllable? Very basic error. And Gamuret should be stressed on the first syllable. These two mistakes make the end result seem a bit amateurish.
His mother feared that like his father he would be slain, and when Parsifal separated from his mother, she died.
Yes, a penitent Kundry. . .or are you so hormone-controlled that you can't quite understand what Kundry represents in the opera's theme? How very testosterone of you. Do you not understand that her seductive behaviors are a direct result of her enchantment by Klingsor and the curse she is under? She begs with Klingsor not to be forced to seduce Parsifal.
Kundrie was behind many deaths of the fellowhood of the table round, she loathed knighthood, and all attached to it and CLEARLY aimed for the destruction of all that stood for nobility.
Do you not understand what she represents in the cycle, she is the opposite of Parzifals sister the enemy of the pure.
Like all those in the faith she has a duality, though mostly she represents vileness in all its stark ugly action and slander....sound familure?
All things human sound familiar to me. Parsifal's mother loathed knighthood, too.
How many deaths of knights do you think Parsifal was responsible for? Has he not a dark side as well? In the opera, Parsifal only becomes Grail King as a result of his compassion towards Kundry, not by his murderous acts. Unfamiliar? Little compassion as you have, you slander the name of Parsifal. As for slander--Kundry was utterly incapable of lying.
The opera is about the reconciliation of opposites.
Parzifal he is the very picture of folly to grace.
I honor him and seek as he did the source
I do not follow the opera as it is a perversion to me,
I much prefer Eichenbachs Parzifal. Though Kundrie WAS incapable of lying she also could only speak the truth as seen through the most vile comprehension.
Parzifal slew knights twisted by evil after his atainment of the red armor and the comprehension of the act of killing.
MY mistake apon reflection I realized how many times kundrie lied to lure knights from the quest, and how she lied to lay in her own brothers arms to birth her bastard son.
Kundrie is nothing to praise, maybe pity but NEVER praise.
Now Parzifals sister Elaine, she is some one to give praise, forgiving folly and mending wounds and sacraficing her life for the spirit.
Have YOU read Wolfram von Eschenbachs Parzival? ;) If yes: respect! Middle High German is quite difficult - especially the parcival-text. Even the translation isn't easy to read.
If you think reading Eschenbachs Parzival is difficult even in the translation, you schould go and see the opera... 6 hours in "german" but you won't understand a word. However it's a materpiece that really touches your religious brain center - even if you are not religious at all.
@conquerorsofscheme so is it! even in Germany nowdays people do not understad the depth of this message this is a masterpiece and in this video they simplify too much and give the impression of a "joketale" what it is not whatsoever!!Nowdays the spiritual message of literature is transform by modernism into fantasy of the middle age
Sorry I have to agree with Mr GrailKnight on this, in the books Kundrie is a very nasty character that deceives many knights.
Parzifal did evil based on ignorance early on but realizing his mistakes he spends the rest of his life as one of the highest knights seeking after the quest.
The play is someones adaptation of the origional mythos, and thus given to interpretation and artistic flair.
Its a good play mind you but far set apart from the spirit of the texts grailknight calls "holy"
White flag. You are both talking about a work other than the opera "Parsifal" by Richard Wagner, which is the subject of the youtube synopsis above. You have read other works, but to enhance your understanding you might want to study the opera a bit. It could possibly expand your vision of the possible symbolisms associated with these characters.
Wagner used at least two different legendary models as a composite in Kundy; I have seen commentaries pointing to as many as seven.
Wagner was studying Eastern religions and intended the Grail Knights as a masculine side of religion: might makes right, force, strict regulation, legalism, limitation of the healing powers of the grail. While Kundry, though cursed and flawed, represented the feminine: inutition, ability to move freely between spiritual worlds, penitence, compassion, service, mercy.
Reconciliation of the masculine and feminine elements (symbolized by the Spear and the Grail) was Wagner's theme.
this is the most helpful synopsis i've ever used. and i'm in college. thank you.

I myself read the books and have seen the play and think you both are crazy.
helyxa has a nasty way with her opinions and I think Mr GRAILKNIGHTPARZIFAL is taking it all far to much to heart.
this is a funny little rendition lets not be silly children and argue.
Now play nice.

Its as superficial as it is WRONG..
Parzifal was kept ignorant of knighthood by his mothers fear that like his father he would be slain.
A penitent Kundrie?....cmon...

The opera you are speaking of is unknown to me do you mean wagners opera??
Have you read Eichenbachs Parzifal?
Yes Parzifal has a dark side all the characters in the 3 holy books do.
Even traitoress like Kundrie HAD to do good as divinity impelled her to against her will.
Kundrie LIED many times in the 3 books, leading many knights to imprisionment and death.
All the traitorous knights flocked to her banner...Only to be brought to their deaths at the hands of the round table knights.

I would if only Wagner was still around to lead the opera himself.
I watched a horrible rendition of Siegfried in Toronto 2 years ago, I wish I never wasted my money.
I worry that many are easily swayed by modern versions of this great mans works.
The symbolism you speak about is all too often lost on the modern directors flashy styles.
I will watch it again though and try to see it your way.
