@MrFinerty ''environmentally responsible'' what kind of PC eco-religious bullshit is that?. @SanctuaryShred If you are taking an advanced test the examiner will be delighted to hear you commentate and would encourage you to do so. A good commentary will actually earn you a higher rating.
If you are taking the DSA 'L' test the examiner won't stop you, particularly if it is helping your driving.
I bought both DVDs after viewing thisand they are excellent. Encouraged me to take the IAM Drivecheck 55 and now considering the test. One comment though, these DVDs are crying out for an HD version. Any chance of this?
I'm amazed your engine didn't blow! Driving near the red line in 2nd and 3rd? No need to do that really if your car has enough power. You could have easily taken that road at 100+ at the start.
@urbex2007 Driving near the red line is not best practice, although of course, it will not blow the engine up as the engine management system will never allow a vehicle to over rev. What you saw was the engine revs never exceeding 90% of the power band. For example, if the vehicle red lines at 6,000 revs - 5400revs would be the maximum, after 5400 revs engine performance starts to drop off. At no time during the drive were 5400 revs exceeded. The speed limit is 60MPH.
umm... this is my first time watching this and it's really interesting. i just have one question. why does he say mirror randomly? is he checking his rear view mirror at that instant when he says it and then focuses back on the road? sry if it sounds dumb but w/e im just curious
@coopasan9 I am happy to reply. Every driver should have a 360 degree awareness and therefore frequent mirror use is essential to maintain this. Yes, indeed the mirror is being used when said and many more times unsaid. The mirror is also being checked when a hazard is identified and before I alter position on the road and/or alter speed. This is based on Roadcraft, the UK Police Driver's Manual - Roadcraft. Please visit my web site and contact me throught that means for more info
I got this DVD after seeing this. I've been driving for 21 years, and this has helped me rid some bad habits and gain some new skills. 'Eye's on full beam' and the overtaking advice is great. The Police Roadcraft DVD is also worth getting.
Thank you so much for these videos. I passed my driving test 5 months ago and am looking to take either the RoSPA or IAM test in the near future. I think these few driving tips have improved my driving no end since passing, and I'm looking to buy your DVD as soon as. Thank you Chris
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am delighted these clips have been helpful. The DVD will be even more so. I congratulate you on setting your sights on preparing for the advanced test. Best wishes- Chris.
Just received a ROSPA Gold and passed the Diamond Specialist test in Dublin, I'm sitting the IAM next week so fingers crossed, the dvd and roadcraft were quality in my preparation for the test, would highly recommend for everyone!!! Thanking you Chris.
Have recently started studying Roadcraft with a view to taking the RoSPA test soon. I bought the DVD to help with commentary and it is excellent. Thanks Chris
Thanks for your comments and I am delighted Ultimate Driving Craft DVD has been helpful to you. All the best for your RoSPA test - let me know how you get on.
I bought this DVD last year on the basis of this clip alone. I was not disappointed. Very thorough and insightful instruction. Drivers of all competencies will learn something from it. Highly recommended.
It is ideal for anyone who wishes to improve their driving skills and/or prepare for an advanced driving test, including police officers preparing for driver training.
This video and the commentary shows proper skills in reading the road ahead, driving at a speed in which he is able to stop within the distance he can see to be clear and safely. If you're are carrying out the correct observations you couldn't drive any quicker. Plus in-car footage always seems to be slower than the actual speeds travelled.
I purchased a copy of this last year. Great advice all round but the clincher here is "anyone can drive fast, it's recognising when you should drive slow"
Your video's are pure artwork, sir. I passed my Rospa advanced driving test at 20 acheiving a gold grade. Yet my commentry was a disgrace in comparison. I've learned alot from watching this. If there's a DVD available, i will most ceartainly buy one as my refresher test is due next year. Thank you for the inspiration.
Anyone can do this, it just takes plenty of practice. Ultimate Driving Craft DVD will show you how to build from the basics to advanced level. Have a good refresher test!
Nice thorough commentary although only tavelling at national speed limits. When I did my advanced police driving course we were expected to make "progress" of up to 120 mph when conditions allowed.
I no longer have exemptions, so it had to be kept to 60MPH on that road. You are quite correct, police advanced drivers are trained to make safe progress, usually up to 90% of the vehicle's performance. The highest speed I trained to on the public highway, was 155MPH in a BMW M3. I did this sort of speed daily for over 22 years. We never had a collision; or caused one, never left the road, and never activated the ABS - proving speed used correctly is safe. Also proving how good Roadcraft is!
I believe everyone who watches the video and think its hard should already be thinking in defensive driving and start looking and anticipating better. There is nothing hard about driving like this. I think every driver taking their test should be trained to this standard. I expect this driver could possibly drive much faster without becoming a DANGER to himself or other road users. People that are trained to drive slowly tend to have worse Observations and don't access very far down the road.
WOW, that was amazing, i love driving and i strive to be as proffesional as i can when behind the wheel, next year i will be training for my HGV license, your videos are great i am sure i will benifit from them.
This really is great stuff. On my standard course at the moment and watching your two video's has actually given me confidence in my drive and commentary. Any chance you can put some more video's on?
Thanks Simon. I hope you are having a good course, enjoy it, it will set you on a path of lifetime safe, progressive and enjoyable driving. There will be more clips in due course. Best regards
I completed my standard with recommendation for response. They were extra pleased with my commentary, which again i have you to thank. Ill keep my eye's peeled for further clips you put on. Cheers again, just stuff.
Congratulaions on passing. Keep practising the commentary and it will help you get a recommendation for the advanced course on your response course. It will also help with 999 training. Remember to keep a high visual horizon. Good luck and keep it safe. Best regards
Nice video and commentary, but you failed to notice the internet address that was obscuring your field of veiw, which would have been better placed at the bottom. :-)
Chris was,(now retired), a Met Police sergeant for 30 years and taught advanced driving at the Met.Police Driving School Hendon for 22 years. He has taught everything from L drivers to high speed pursuit. He also taught Prince William and Prince Harry. See his website.
Also how do you do ur Starting drill? The starting Drill is something I didnt really like doing so I've completely forgotten it.I recently bought your DVD from you on Ebay. I learned a lot from it and It's got me interested in advanced driving again.
When I was taught advanced driving I was taught 2 Commentate like this when approaching bend " Mirror, N/S mirror, Position is to the near side,Braking, Limit point is moving at a constant speed, speed is correct, gear is 3 and a light degree of acceleration into the bend. Mirror O/S Mirror. In the Far distance Blah blah. Whats your views on this way of commentating?
That is absolutely fine, but there will be times when you will have to be far more economic with your words. I will contact you, and advise you on the phone. There is not enough space here.
You make a very good point Andy. As you know a horn/headlamp flash is to warn of presence. The driver was watching me in his very large mirror and a headlamp flash/horn would have been 'overkill' and could have even been counter productive. There are times when you need to say what you are doing, rather than why not. Given more time I would have included that. I am pleased you have mentioned it, as it gives me the opportunity to explain it. Thanks
@AnalogueAndy AGREED!!!! On the horn.....In Barbados where most our laws are based on the Crown.....when we drive to blind corners and 90 degree bends we have to sound our horns to indicate to the other side who is also coming towards the blind corners that someone is coming back to 2nd is not the only way....you can back to 2nd and still approach someone in the middle of the road and i think the horn and flash of light on the tractor would've helped. He may have called you when it's safe out.
Very informative and interesting video...it's interesting to see the difference between the way British officers respond compared to here in the States. Mr. Gilbert is a true professional!
I have seen this entire video. I have seen nothinglike it anywhere. A must have for anyone who wants to drive better and safer. I bought this DVD for my neice who has just passed her driving test and is already driving better.. Can we have more of the same?
One thing I worry about when taking a bend is the appearance of slow cyclists half way through.

In all seriousness though, I think a lot of drivers would benefit from these lessons.
