  • We have been getting fed aural junk food. And THIS reminds us of that Truth! huuuhhhhooooOH! I'm just gonna close my eyes and Play It Again Sam!

    THANKS theart

  • I can not recall the Last time I liked EVERY track on an alblum..

    EXCELLENT JOB!!!!!

  • This song grabbed me the first time I listened to it, and is now firmly in my Top Ten Tom songs, ( being that I love everything he has ever done, that is really saying something.) Anyone else remember their first flash of freedom? For me, that would be the summer of 1979...jumping off point from childhood into "real life" and the wider world. Everytime I listen to it, I apply it to varying situations in my life, and it speaks to all of them. Wonderful stuff, and I love Mike Campbell.

  • These guys stepped outside of themselves to make this cd, almost how the beatles did with sgt peppers...good stuff

  • @RockandRoll51188 If anything they stepped within themselves, this is the Heartbreakers in their down time. This is what they sound like when they jam.

  • Carries a good groove and lifts the senses! Speaks loudly the value of Freedom. Nice to be able to think and listen instead of just being blasted with audio.

  • trippy

  • Wow. Back to the 1960's Psych...maybe there is hope for current music!

  • For some reason this sound a little like Jimi Hendrix

  • in love with this song...just like all the others...thanks tom :)

  • Superb! This is their best track ever!

  • THIS IS THE BEST TRACK BY THEM YET!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Sounds like the Samples. Remember them

  • Like a well-aged cognac - the older, the better

  • By far one of his best songs ever.

  • One can see the influence of CS&N and has a nice jazz beat reminiscent of the band Spirit. Tom can be somewhat derivative at time but he's still better than most in finding the coast of freedom but again if this is the first single, which is pretty interesting, I will again bypass the CD. Yeah as prior commentators I see pick up on the Neil Young (Tom has been influence by Young on many records) and the Allman Brothers.

  • @11xzxzxz hes all over the map here , its the fusion bands that stand the test of time , love this shit . tastiest tom ever

  • @Thadmotor1044 Hey thanks for bringing me back for another listen. Still not into lyrics or Tom's derivative sound. But now I came back and I like the music more .. wish it were just an instrumental jam and Neil Young was writing the lyrics as he did long ago. Feel the early Boz Scaggs swirl organ from Moments, 8 Miles high with the Byrds, Spirit, Duane A, everybody really. This retro sound is the jolt rock and roll needs. What's the next best song on his new record? Thanks.

  • @11xzxzxz Oh I got one more .. Country Girl from CSN&Y . Neil Young wrote it. And I once read a review of a Tom Petty CD and the reviewer said Neil Young was lurking in most every song.

  • @11xzxzxz thinking too much sucks- it sucks even more, when you can't just sit and relax and enjoy a great song.... analyze this-

  • @gumbyonacid OK then .. you are under-analytical which is OK too. People have a right to analyze and/or relax. I was doing both. If everyone just said "great song" that would be pretty boring YT and that is not in my nature. If you were an teacher of any kind you would understand. I was not be preachy just giving my impressions to one person who asked.

  • @11xzxzxz understood

  • @gumbyonacid Thanks for understanding my (small) point. Happy Holidays!

  • Anybody else out there who who will be in attendance for the Sept. 16, St Pete Forum Show?

  • didn't think these guys had this tune in them.

  • @matallijames- yep, him too...lol

  • Well that was different. Most excellent there Tom. Didn't know you had it in you!

  • I'm 13 and I like this song. I heard it on Deep Tracks.

  • Def has an allman bros. vibe to it...GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

  • @jeffconmon I know that's exactly what I was thinnking!

  • Saw Tom Petty & Heartbreakers last night in Cincinnati. They played this three-quarters of the way into the concert. It was 90 degrees out where the breezes were blowing. Can't imagine the conditions on stage. They were Magnificent! Petty is great, The Heartbreakers are as well. Mike Campbell--the most under-appreciated guitarist in rock.

  • Shocked nobody thought of Neil Young or CSNY when they were thinking of others that this reminded them of - Petty even sings like Neil on this track. I definitely hear a little Allman Brothers in there too. Mike Campbell channeling Duane Allman. Great tune.

  • favorite part of song... 5:00 - 5:10

  • Just love, love, love this band!!!!!!

  • The start of this song has the coolest weirdest vibe to me.

  • @bluesinduluth The whole production is very 70's Progressive Art Rock Band Stylings ala Floyd, Genesis, Strawbs, Gentle Giant feel. Nicely done.

    He's talking to us....

  • Such a cool sound to his voice. Great tune. Instant classic.

  • cool sound. classic sound, but still innovative.

  • Combination of the baseline and guitar sounds a bit like the Allman Brothers--In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, circa 1970....good jam.

  • @DrGrif88 I thought the exact same thing when I first heard this tune. Might be my favorite of the album.

  • This tune gives me the feeling of being at a big outdoor concert, it's almost like a flash back in the past, brought to the present, not Woodstock, but something different, and very cool and awesome.

  • It's like, Tom Petty, meet Mike Campbell, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour... It's great!

  • @e7353 i heard a little Jeff Beck in there too ;)

  • Only Tom Petty has the spark, balls & genius to draw upon the best of rock musical heritage and produce a unique and celebratory track like this. Long live the Heartbreakers

  • long live tom petty

  • fucking great music..period

  • My god, this is so good. I'll be proud to buy this CD when it comes out.

  • Seriously influenced by JIMI and Pink Floyd, sounds like. I LIKEY! Where the hell is my bong...

  • This is classic stuff - if this is indicative of the new album, I am VERY excited!!

  • You have to treasure this! How he/they keep coming up with fantastic new stuff like they do time and again is amazing! How long can they go on? Forever I hope, but sadly, you know it has to end sooner or later, what a legacy to leave! I can't wait for the album and the tour!!

  • Only 15 but somehow it feels like this new album takes me back lol. Maybe cuz I've seen so many old videos.

  • Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice!

  • Its like opening a bottle of fresh air from decades past.

  • PETTTTYYYYY!

  • This is an awesome song and i cant wait to listen to the whole album. from the songs ive heard, good enough, first flash of freedom, i shouldve known it, theres something good coming, they are all awesome.

Mike Cambel doesn't get the recognition that he deserves

  • I love it!

  • How do they do it?....Only TP&THB can write a brand new song that sounds like a classic song.....I mean really..this sounds like it could have been a hit in the seventies.....I love it....i hear nuances of hendrix, led zepp, allman bros. and even the beatles.....Can't wait to see them again.... in hartford this summer!!!!!!!!

  • @donwan67 Yes....all those bands are recalled....I really identified with the Allmans on this particular song, while Mike Campbell out-pages the erstwhile Zep guitarist on "I Should Have Known It". This band, and Petty are possibly the least appreciated band working today. Name me anyone else, besides Springsteen who is 60 and consistently puts out interesting music that doesn't just rehash what worked in the past? These guys are national treasures.

  • KILLER song!

  • I agree.....totally reminds me of the Allman Bros. Great feel and sound

  • Woah. What an amazing tune. The composition is well versed with jazz, blues and the good old sound of Tom's rich guitar sound.

This song gives me that nostalgia I get from a Pink Floyd tune, yet with a true American heritage behind it...I will be there August 12th! I can not wait...

  • I first heard this today at work and was totally impressed with the quality in the musicianship of them all,Great guitar work.

  • the jazz style again is appreciated, not that you had to change your style at all but i really like the dip into the continued jass theme, whatever songs you guys write and preform i will always love... always tp and the heatrbreakers...

  • Love this! Has an Allman Bros. flavor!

  • in memory of elisabeth reed

  • I hear some Hendrix influence, especially in the beginning, good song though I like it!

  • @mdr9inchnails

Sorry can't hear Hendrix in this, maybe it just Mike Campbell being the God that he is.....

  • @birdizzo No shit! Well said!

  • Sounds like Fleetwood Mac ala Bob Welch era. A sound you don't here anymore.

  • @regibold123 hear*

  • going to tom petty at George, wa on the 12th

  • @broomstick74 Me too! all the way from northwest Florida. hahaha maybe i'll see you there;)

  • Sounds real good. Makes me think of the 60s a little. Trippy.

  • @themunkrikt .....right, like a bit of The Dead throw in there....sounds good.

  • The man is still a living god.

  • This tune is killer!!

  • a little too slow but not bad!

  • I heard this song today and couldn't believe it! It's great.

  • I hear old Allman Brothers - some Pink Floyd great rock and roll - love this cut off it

More Tom Petty and his GREAT band comin at us with his new album Mojo

  • I know they are on tour this year, but I surely hope they don't stop anytime too soon! They are one of the all time great bands, unique sound, mix of members, and have been together a long long time.

  • @ArtDonna84 Petty said they wouldnt stop until he cant make great music anymore

  • @Burninyou I did read that. I guess we Tom Petty fans are in for a lot of great music to come and more opporutnities to see Tom and the HB's somewhere on the tour.

  • Awesome. This isn't the peak of your talent. I love the song: I mean, like 9.75/10. But I just think it sort of lacks in comparison to American Girl and Free Fallin' and Breakdown and other such songs. Those were 11/10 songs. You're my favorite band. Love you guys, and you're new bluesy theme. But I'd just love a little more back-to-your-roots kind of music. AND I THINK THIS SOUNDS LIKE FRIGGIN HENDRIX.

  • MAY 6TH! NC!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The BEST Rock band of ALL TIME is comming to a place 30 minutes away from me :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im ready to see if he has his beard or not lol.

  • Very much like some old Allman Brothers!

  • Another good song can't wait for the cd to come out this spring!

  • I want the album !!!!

  • very very amazing, but compared to other songs they've put out in the past 3 decades wow, what a dissapointment......or maybe my expectations (musically) are a bit high

  • @sgf1989 I think this is the best album by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers since Full Moon Fever (which technically is a solo album, but it has most members of the band playing so......)

  • I have not heard a song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers I don't like. I love this band!

  • while the music is a good high quality effort for the boys, it is a bit lengthy.

  • These guys ALWAYS deliver the goods.

  • Good one, boys! :)

  • They've had allot of stick from the 'diehards' on there forums about the bluesy direction this album appears to be taken but I can't understand why. Whilst the genre isn't exactly groundbreaking it's still a new direction for the Heartbreakers and sounds awesome!

  • Es molt bona aquesta canço. Estic convençut que despres d'una primera grabació, el grup en va quedar satisfet. ( is a very good song ) My name is Felip;Goodbye from Catalunya.

  • I love It!!!!!!!

  • Nice

  • nice

  • Still good after all these years.

  • @86damageinc It doesn't really feel like (nearly) 35 years! When I hear new music from Tom like this, I have to remind myself of just how many times he's pulled this off before!

Thanks, Tom, Mike, Benmont, Ron, Scott, Steve, Stan & Howie (RIP)... for providing me when much of the best music of my generation, and beyond!

  • Tom Petty Rules
