I was just in Freetown about a month ago, they have REMOVED all the bars & restaurants that were constructed on the beach (right on the shoreline) itself. The Government is rightly encouraging development on the right side of the road and off the shoreline.
Also I heard the hydro electrical power plant should be online soon (2010?). There is progress happening. The situation isn't perfect but the I'm glad its being talked about and steps are being taken to solve the problems facing Freetown.

I saw a documentary one time about some tribal people in africa who lived out in the jungle, raised pigs and planted their gardens and stuff. They didn't have any of these problems. Some people from the city invited them to come play soccer and get aquainted and when they were asked why they kept living in the old ways they just said the old ways were better and they didn't have all the problems and didn't want them.

What is most sad, is that while billions is spent trying to fight HIV/AIDs, the problems of poor sanitation, polluted water and the various disease that arise from such conditions kill far more Africans and other people in the developing world than HIV/AIDs ever has or will. I was just in Freetown about a month ago, they have REMOVED all the bars & restaurants that were constructed on the beach (right on the shoreline) itself. The Government is rightly encouraging development on the right side of the road and off the shoreline.
Also I heard the hydro electrical power plant should be online soon (2010?). There is progress happening. The situation isn't perfect but the I'm glad its being talked about and steps are being taken to solve the problems facing Freetown.

I have solutions. :P It may be hard to enact, since many of the African governments are easily corrupted and ignorant, but use the funds they have to hire sanitation workers, this could create jobs, and have many people could move out of the slums, and if they created more appartment buildings, then they could actually get something going. The government could pay people by the pound of garbage retrieved. Also create public bathrooms and public garbage cans, which would be emptied regularly.

I saw a documentary one time about some tribal people in africa who lived out in the jungle, raised pigs and planted their gardens and stuff. They didn't have any of these problems. Some people from the city invited them to come play soccer and get aquainted and when they were asked why they kept living in the old ways they just said the old ways were better and they didn't have all the problems and didn't want them.

I agree that colonization is the main cause of Africas problems along with corrupt leaders and exploitation of natural resources by multinational companies. My country was also a former colony. Education, and in particular education of women, is the key.

i dont know or there is a government atm. in Siera Leone, but if there is, it should be ashamed. They should organise groups and groups of people to start cleaning, building en working. if not, ...... i see no hope...

Each community needs to police itself and monitor how is discards its waste , the simple removal of the waste around them would bring massive change and motivation to carry on so. A healthier future for the kids. Once people are in the habit of discarding rubbish correctly they can move on to the next issue.

The government of Sierra Leone must be corrupt if they don't even bother to try and remedy the conditions of bad sanitation and poverty that their people live in. I think that it's horrible that any people should have to live in these conditions that these people are forced to live in.

What is most sad, is that while billions is spent trying to fight HIV/AIDs, the problems of poor sanitation, polluted water and the various disease that arise from such conditions kill far more Africans and other people in the developing world than HIV/AIDs ever has or will. This can be fixed and it isn't even expensive to fix. But the funding continues to go elsewhere.
