We did let it go - the poor fish was only out of the water a couple of minutes. I don't know why the guide touched his eye, but I'm sure it didn't hurt the fish. STocked lakes like these are the only way these fish are going to survive, because the Mekong fishermen have hunted the ones in the wild to extinction. Sad...

Definitely best to just take a photo and not take the fish. We just took some photos and this video and put him back in the water. This is a catch and release pond only - you're not allowed to remove any fish...

look at pictures of a Mekong then. Perhaps the Mekong Giant Catfish is a carp...but thats your assumption not mine.

That is a catfish. You can distinguish the Mekong catfish from other catfish from the location of the eyes. That is why the guide was noting the location of the eyes.

There are very very large carp in the Mekong as well, but those would have large visible scales.
