Imago is actually the worm mini-boss (Kiru Giru) you fought before, slowly cocooning. When you see it in Ridley's Lair, it had tunneled downwards, but by the time you go back up to see the tunnel it burrowed, it had hatched from it's cocoon and turned into Imago.
I'm surprised you didn't title this part "Ridley, King of the Pirates".
And I think the main reason BSC had the whole rant about Samus "not having emotions" was related more to the degree to which her PTSD kicked in during Other M when she encountered Ridley, and that considering she had run into him at least twice before (in previous games), her trauma seemed a little extreme.
Actually it makes sense here because it's her first fight with Ridley. But in Other M she is petrified and shocked... And she saw Ridley die 3 times already! (Zero Mission, Prime and Corruption). It makes no sense.

Actually, you don't have to look at the cocoon, you can just head right back up the elevator and the hole will open up.
