it's easier to understand a foreign language rather than be able to form the correct sentences and reply. i've found that with people i know who's parents speak a foreign language to them, but they themselves answer back in english because it's easier to do. kobe can probably speak it to a point but not as well as he wants to, and thus doesnt want to embarass himself on national tv.

don't hate on the mexicans, they always get hated on, sophistication has nothing to do with it, i've talked to mexicans that when they know you speak their language they rip through their spanish just like pau does. i think it excites them when someone speaks their language i get it all the time not just from mexicans, but cubans as well rip through their spanish when they find out you can speak their language.
