Thank-you so much for this informative video. Your horses are beautiful! I know someone has already asked about this, but can you please let us know where to purchase the grid wall? My e-mail: aa@wispwest.net Thanks!
Thanks! Their diet is very simple: CoolStance (coconut meal) feed 2 x per day mixed with HorseTech's High Point Grass vitamin/mineral supplement and free-choice bahia hay from the slow feeders! Oh, and salt. That's it -- and they've never looked or felt better.
Over time the plywood at the bottom does warp a bit but not too bad on ours yet. No problem to replace those as needed though too -- maybe every 6 months or so would be my guess?
For our horses, yes, it does slow them down to about 1/2 the rate of eating as without the slow-feeders. But, we feed bahia grass hay that is fine and not easy to pull out in big clumps. We haven't had a ton of rain since putting these out but it doesn't seem to cause any issues. The hay on top gets wet but once they eat through that, it is dryer underneath. Somehow most of the rain seems to go to the bottom and drain there. We clean out the bottom every 24 hours when we put new bales in.
These are really cool...just what I am looking for! I have two questions -- (1) most of the "slow" feeder stuff has 1.5" or 2" openings in the grid, but the gridwall is 3" openings. does it still significantly slow down the eating? (2) what happens in the rain?
Our horses have been enjoying these feeders for over a month now and I haven't seen any signs of irritation on anyone's nose yet! Another worry I had was that they would try to bite between the slats and wear the sides of their teeth but no indication they ever use anything other than their lips to pull the hay out.
I'm having loading issues today, so have only seen 1:20 so far. These do look cool. My question is, would the grid wall end up irritating their noses over time, do you think?
I just watched the first couple of minutes, because I'm at school, I'll try to watch the rest later. These look absolutely great, though! Looks like the horses think they are pretty wonderful as well. :)
