if you are looking for a better seal on the garbage cans you can try putting 3-5 full pieces of newspaper over the inverted garbage can lid and thoroughly wetting the paper with water from a spraybottle. the wet newspaper wont (be so prone to) catch fire and it helps create a tighter seal around the lid- trapping more smoke and creating a sealed reduction process. ive found a better seal = brighter lustre and darker cracks on crackle glazes. let the sawdust get burning before snuffing it out.
depending on the glaze used the time from kiln to your paper or sawdust can affect the end look of the glaze. For example if you are using a clear raku glaze if you let it stand out of the kiln for some time you can see it crack and add affects to itself. Letting you judge when you want to let it burn.
happy firing! :)

It's sawdust. Pine sawdust to be precise. It's extremely flammable at this stage in the firing.

Quite slowly you moved them from the oven to the trash can. Doesn't this make them different in color?
And how does the flames affect the end result? We never let them burn, just smoke.
End result is wonderful!
