no offense really, but it feels weird when i see an old guy talking about a tech company XD I'm used to see young people run this type of businesses hhhh
@HamzaVids Young people work for "old" people as they do the tech stuff. The "old" people run a business... they can give shit about how to code in C++ or C.
"We're just like a startup!" ...except we've got capital falling out of our asses, are already embedded as defacto leaders in almost every other tech market (office, windows, server, ASP.NET, etc), technology that partially defines the market to back us up (because we made it) and have existed for about a quarter century making a profit... maybe he should have said, "We FEEL just like a startup!" (because we're putting in all this effort but thanks to the established are going nowhere fast!)
@mikeatEMEco It's called expansion. Google did it for every market it's in but for search. Apple has done it. Why does it have to become a problem when MS does it? It's one of the primary principles of growing a business: Expanding into new markets.
I think that the Tech sector product development / turn around times have become too short in the 21st Century for Microsoft to really pull off the success they had in the 80's and 90's by copying and out pacing the originators of a given technology. With these kind of turn-around times, Microsoft keeps looking like they're coming to the party with too little, too late.
No, when I say "genius" i mean exactly that. There's a reason why Steve Ballmer is one of the richest people on the planet and there's a reason why he's the CEO of Microsoft.
If you don't want to acknowledge that, fine, but you cannot make a serious argument against it.
I like seeing him squirm! Given all the BSOD we've endured, then I love to see the worry lines. But a startup? Give me a break! How about "You missed the boat" and I'm glad you did!
Ballmer always squirms when he talks about any company M$ competes with. It's cally justification and it will be the reason for M$'s eventually retreat back to what they do best - develop software. They are doing wayyyy too much (being an enterprise) and are being hurt finacially because of it.
Haha "We're not the market leader"... Exactly true. If Microsoft didn't have an OS monopoly, they'd be forced to actually provide the services that people are demanding, rather than the bullshit they've been pumping out for decades now. Their 'we own your soul' philosophy is exactly why people hate them.
Google, on the other hand, is providing high quality services based on actual customer needs. Its because of their high quality products and services that they're the number one player.
True, but the bigger they get the more hated they become. And I think Google is getting there. People want alternatives. Google is becoming so powerful that they have been becoming the de facto for privacy issue. They are indexing everything from search habits to street view. The question is, how much do you trust your personal information to google?
Ballmer sounds like he's read a book or two about search and start ups but didn't really understand what he was reading.
There is no part of Microsoft that is anything like a start up. Trying different business tactics is not how start-ups behave (they typically pick one and try like the dickens to make it work, on very little funding.)
Google's strength is not being big. Its being smart. They put 99% of their PhDs to work on their products. At Microsoft its < 1%.
Your data is completely false. Microsoft employs many more PhDs than Google in over 30 countries. They are a massive company with many failures and many successes. Obviously you choose to ignore the success and focus on the failure. Let me ask you this question: how do you build an operating system for over a billion users? Ask Microsoft about windows 7, but of course you'll mention Vista and only focus on it.
My information is a lot more personal than you might imagine.
It doesn't matter how many PhD's Microsoft actually hires -- barely any of them work on any actual product. Microsoft hires them just to make sure their competitors don't hire them; they could care less what they actually do for Microsoft.
I know all about Win7, and its fine. But its still ankle biting off of Mac OS X and Linux, not delivering anything unique or creative. And its about 5 years too late.
sorry some one sent this and i am freaked out. 1908 a lady named sally rusa was in the woods looking for a dog wen a ghost came out and killed her. if you read this you will find a bloody body in your closet and it will haunt you and your family and will KILL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. He is talking about the 'search' section of his company. Microsoft is investing Millions to compete with Google. So in that context, yes Google is making much more money than say...Bing.
Right now they think of their OS as something invincible, so they are trying to grow on the web and other markets. The problem is that by doing that, the list of M$ competitors keeps growing. Before, they didnt have to deal with Sony, Nintendo, Google and all those big shots...they'll eventually reach a wall
Microsoft still underestimates the power of branding. Microsoft still thinks they can reach for the stars. Google and Apple have clear won the race in terms of innovation and creativity. And I don't think Microsoft will win the search-engine war that will unfold.
Windows 7 is the most advanced operating system ever developed and will completely overtake the market share of XP. Microsoft isn't an innovative company they are an evolver. They take the best features from Linux and Apple and integrate them into their OS for the masses.

Google is slowly eroding Microsoft business by giving free online version of their software (Spreadsheet, Word, and now OSes)
Microsoft should erode Google's business as well
What Microsoft should do, is an "AdSense" for Bing that pays more than what Google does.
Singe 98% of Google's revenues comes from Ads it's gonna be a big hit for Google when publishers will move to Bing (because they can make more money)
MS don't even need to run it for a profit, Google can never match that!
peppeddu 1 year ago
But if Bing isn't as good as Google (which it isn't), it won't get the traffic -> impressions -> clicks on those ads anyway...
invertedoniony 1 year ago
@invertedoniony It doesn't have to be.
Google doesn't have a better office suite than Microsoft, yet they are giving it away for free, and they are slowly eroding Microsoft's profit.
They (MS) can do the same for advertising.
Is Bing is only 10% popular compared to Google?, they can erode Google's revenue by 10% (which is many billions of dollars)
Microsoft has many revenue streams, Google has only one (advertising)
Remove that and everything else that they do will automatically disappear.
peppeddu 1 year ago
'we can't outspend'
Wow... They've got no chance.

ummm.... is he not talking about M$?
and why isn't he jumping around the stage yelling "CLICK ADS, CLICK ADS, CLICK ADS!!!!!" ?
maybe he's more toned down this time as they're getting utterly killed in the search engine niche.
what they should do, as a company, is focus on the product that made them rich in the first place, which as of yet, still sucks utter balls!
last thing we need is a search giving us blue screens and freezing all the time!
