I love Shirley as Eboli. Her interpretation was always passionate and emotional. The heart of this aria is the slow middle section, which Verrett takes her time in singing beautifully and movingly. Eboli loves Don Carlo but she curses her beauty and is frantic that Carlo is about to lose his life. Her understanding of the character really shines. Shirley's singing is magnificent, her deep mezzo and soprano high register is perfect for the drama of Eboli. Brava and RIP Shirley Verrett.
@Liwah I gathered there was a contest going on about different mezzo's singing O Don fatale. I'm curious if you have listend to the version of O Don fatale of another great mezzo and I mean Brigitte Fassbaender. Perhaps you should listen to her as well before you decide. It's here as well if you wish to listen to it. It is in german but she has sung it in italian as well. Just listen to it.

My goodness, wasn't Edward Downes a wonderful, wonderful Verdi conductor. Everybody always sang their very best with him. Put him together with the greatest Eboli of the century, and...well just listen.
NOTHING in opera has impressed me so much, as when the 1st time I heard her sing (Dalila). Shirleys voice is SPECTACULAR! So pure, so full, strong, rounded, beautiful, BOY IS SHE EVER GREAT!
