  • This is not becuase the elephant is afraid of the mouse, it's because elephants are very gentle creatures. It knew it would've killed the mouse by stepping on it, so it went around

  • i'm taking a mouse in my trip to africa, just in case i'm in the middle of an elephant stampede

  • This is what we call Blizzard balancing... =)

  • so many comments saying why are the biggest walking animals scared of 1 of the smallest its actually cause elephants cant actually see all the way to the floor right infront of them so they are startled by the noise and back away

  • what did u expect if the ground moves and a mouse appears would u wanna go near that mouse

  • naw, i think the elephant got scared cuz the dung moved all weird in front of it and evntually the mice could've just added to the elephant being freaked at the rolling dung.

  • poor mouse, stuck in a giant dung

  • isnt it to close to the wild elephant??? wow... Am saying this just because i want to see some more episodes of MB ...and ... with this guys.

  • Elephants are afraid of white mice? That is so racist...

  • they need to try this mouse trick on the elephants in africa with their calfs standing next to them. elephants get angry when they are next to their babies. maybe they will attack the mouse and not be scared.

  • i think its more along the lines of "HOLY SHIT THAT TURD JUST MOVED"

  • MOUSIES :3

  • I think if it were a snake, it might have the same reaction.. might it be instict to avoid small dangerous, possibly poisonous creatures?

  • The little Albert elephant test.

  • thought they were afraid of mice because they can climb up their trunks and suffocate them?

  • i would get a stick and let it climb on it and throw the stick out the window. cause blez88 would step on it.

  • @ANormalGuy it's not coconut... its elephant poo :X(i saw that episode xD)

and yeah i think that it wasn't the poo that scared the elephant because everytime they need to poo they would run while making it x'D

  • throw the mouse at it!

  • I don't think that will prove anything.... If someone throws anything at you... don't you get scared for the moment ? because you don't know what it is ? even if it is a rock.... or something small that would not hurt you... you just wanna get out of the way... reflexes

  • yee but it was like some coconut that moved and scared him

  • oh come on...

If the coconut was what scared the elephant all the elephant in India would have died of heart attack =.=

  • its dung not a coconut they say it in the video :|

  • it want a cocoa nut it was a dung ball , replay and listen again lol...

  • the elephant wasnt afraid, its been proven that elephants actively try to avoid trampling anything

  • Nothing is ever proven in science, everything is open to more evidence.

It's possible that that's what happened but the elephant made a sound and moved backwards. So at the very least it was surprised, then decided to not tread on it. But from this experiment I'd say it's more likely that mice (or small fast things) scare elephants.

Maybe some guage of fear could be found for elephants (urination?) then they could be shown mice over a time period.

Or other small-medium animals could be tested

  • The animal could have compassion for not stepping on some mice.

  • But being noticible or not, why the hell is an Elephant, the biggest mamal walking on earth is afraid of a freaking small white mouse.

    That's strange.

And this guy statement right down here, is just ridiculous.

  • are you afraid of spiders? if you walk in your... room... and you almost step on a black widow... what do you do? step on it? or get back a few steps... and if not kill it/ move it out of the way.... you go around it....just like the elephant did....he probably did not know what it was. if that "thing" could hurt him or not. and he choose to go around it. I think that is the smartest think to...think if it was something that was poisoned? or that could sting him....isn't it better to go around ?

  • The thing is, you're comparing humans to elephants, sure they are very similar to us, but our knowledge goes beyond moving around things.

I think they should test this with other coloured mices, I think the elephant saw something unusual in the floor, something white, and that's why he moved away, he didn't recognized the mice itself.

  • @blez88 A spider vs human is probably a good size and weight ratio as a mouse to an elephant

  • just like you d be afraid of an earwig entering your ear the elephants are afraid of mice enering their trunks,, in the wild mice would be more camouflaged and its probably a common occurance for them, white was noticeable

  • it's up side down Oo

  • LOL " for me i...GO TIME"

  • wow.....

  • hahah thats reallyyyy weirdd

  • Maybe it was just surprised that a mouse was under the dung, not actually afraid of the mouse

  • LOL!!!! SKWEAK. the elephant must have been like HOLY SHIT

  • Hmm.. Okies. Did they try it with a small white creature not of the rodent kind ? See, that's the science geek in me being thorough :P

  • The test was to see if they were afraid of MICE, not any other type of rodent.

  • If they react the same way to *any* small white creature, it's not *mice* they're "afraid of", but small white creatures around their feet.

  • Well, you're right however, the episode was focused on proving the myth which states that elephants are afraid of *mice* and not small white creatures.

  • Well, you're right however, the episode was focused on proving the myth which states that elephants are afraid of *mice* and not small white creatures.

  • Then you have to test with small white rabbits and small brown mice and small brown mice painted white. My own opinion is *any* small *noticible* scurrying thing would have done the trick. And white is very noticible against a usually brown and tan background.

  • Well, you're right but the myth by itself only states that elephants are afraid of *mice*, not general small white creatures.

  • LOOOL!!....squeaky squeak!!!

hahaha....i think horses are afraid of mice too.

but thats just funny.....i saw it in a cartoon, so i believed it years ago...nothing new :D

  • ya but somethings in a carttoon were u kno impossible

but they wanted to see if this really was true :D

  • *Not* busted. Do the same thing - *exactly* - without the mouse.

  • I have seen this episode, and they try it without the mouse. When the dung moved by itself, the elephant didn't back away or anything; it just kept walking.

  • They tried pulling the dung-ball-thing away with no mouse, they can predict common complaints like that, the uploader simply did not include that bit. The elephant ignored the shuffling pile of dung, only showing a reaction when a mouse was present.

  • that mouse is soo cute

  • it was like the big guy did not want to step on the lil guy.but i am no expert.

  • i think it's because, elephants having huge and sensitive ears, they are easily able to hear the mouse's high pitched squeak. that seems like a plausible theory

  • No freakin' way. It's just so unbelievable.

  • the elefants are actually afreid the mouse might go into their ear cavity...ITS THE SCIENCE EXPLENATION OF THE THING

  • no =i think its because they climb up thier trunks

  • The high pitch sqeeck from the mouse hurt the elephants ears and sent its going away....

  • CHICKEN COWARD!

  • ohh

    ok,SeiichiroAoki

    ...then this is really wierd

  • FLABBERGAST

  • they should have checked with just the cage thing.

the mouse probably didn't scare it it was just the moving cover

  • They did. They repeated the test with no mouse, and the elephant just moved along. They repeated it with the mouse, and yielded the same results; the elephant stopped dead, and clearly avoided the mouse, giving it a huge distance as it walked around and away.

  • as i remember this, the elephant get´s scared becaus it cant see the mouse feet, any think´s it a snake. (since some snake venom is powerfull enought to kill em, they back away)

  • I've seen dogs that are afraid of mice.

  • I wasn't surprised. I saw an AFV where a squirrel terrorized an elephant and her calf, they ran and hid in their stable.

  • I serousily thought the elephant was going to step on the damn mouse but that completely shocked the crap out of me when i saw it!

  • Release... the MOUSE! *grin* I loved this-- what a great episode.

  • What the...!!! Woow that's crazy!!!

  • not only the mythbusters and the narrator. I'm flabbergasted

  • lol i saw the episode... damn i didnt expect that

  • click on my name it has a new episode

  • how come i dont see any of these new episodes in canada?

  • This shocked the hell out of me.

  • omg.....very crazy

  • jajaja me encanta este programa<--- hahaha, I love that show

  • wicked cool.. who'da thought?
