Those are mayflies (order Ephemeroptera) not fishflies (order Megaloptera, family Corydalidae, genus Chauliodes). I haven't heard of mayflies being referred to as fishflies, but maybe it's a Lake St. Clair thing.

Pure Heaven for me! The fly rods are packed and I'm ready for my annual fish fly (hex) run to Michigan. Love it.

I grew up in GPW...worked at the Woods Park pool as a life guard. We used to see these come in land in the evening and it looked like a storm coming. In the morning we would have to shovel off the pool deck with snow shovels and they would bring the snow plow in to do the parking lot. The mounds of "fish flies" were as high as snow piles in winter...and STINK!!!

Go to Florida during love bug season and you will appreciate fish flies.

Advantages of fish flies over love bugs:

1) They don't hang out on the freeways, making a gooey mess on your windshield

2) They only swarm once a year

3) Fish Flies tend to collect on buildings, posts, lights, etc. They are not usually something that you have to be careful about breathing or you'll be eating them.

4) They're only a problem within 5 miles or so of the water.

Compared to love bugs I don't mind fish flies.
