  • when he says "strange creatures" he seems to be channelling William Shatner

  • it's a shame more people didn't play this game. It was a great underrated game. It was one of the reasons to have a Gamecube.

Pity Silicon Knights haven't done anything good since ED.

I also love Maximillian's ending the most.

  • Press 9 for "MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES"

That voice actor put so much into his role. I love it.

  • That door slam got me startled the first time. It was such a good sound quality and for some reason scary.

  • The first time I saw this scene it creeped me out pretty good...I sat there doing the blank stare. This is just an awesome, awesome game. I wish there were a sequel, but it's been so many years I doubt that will EVER happen.

  • Is he insane, or is he the only sane one - the only one who acts rationally given the situation at hand?

    Food for thought.

  • This game makes "Black Swan" look like "Birdemic."

    There, I said it.

  • Imagine if the Ministry of Magic locked Harry in Azkaban after he tryed to warn the world about Voldemort's return.

  • they should have called this game 'eternal sunshine' and instead of zombies had bunny rabbits.

  • only a diffrent monster ffail

  • This cutscene represents the very escence of the game.

  • is it during Max's story that the Memory card thing appears?

  • Still my fave cut scene in any game. It`s saddening to know William Michael Hootkins is no longer with us - such a talented voice actor.

  • I loved this game. They need to make another one.

  • And thats why: I do every thing my self, and complain about it to others. What I usually say when people want me to do stuff is: "Lazy bums can't do anything yourself!" or "Why do I have to do everything?" Well, work has its own rewards. :3

  • Fucking masterpiece of a game.

And an amazing scene within it.

  • I figure it went something like this:

"Hello there, I am Maximillion Roivas, I murdered most of my servants because they are horrible monsters wearing human skins. Please accomany me into this darkened basement, where there is a horrible cyclopean city. It is totally real and not a figment of my deranged imagination, and I totally won't stab you in the dark."

"Of course, of course. My name in Dr. Augustus, I totally believe you and am not about to have you locked up in the insane asylum."

  • Xel's guardian was by far the creepiest thing in the game short of Xel herself.

Love Max, favorite character! I especially like how he finishes off the creatures with the sabre. STAB! KICK! DIE!

  • I love this game, I've just bought it today! =D

  • 1:48

AMAZING voice acting, wouldn't expect any less.

  • i think theres a seqeul on the wii

  • Raziel :)

  • MAY THE MOTHER FUCKING RATS EAT YOUR GOD DAMNED EYES!

  • Micheal Bell is awesome

  • @Tangomoose I'm not sure this IS Michael Bell. According to the IMDB, it is actually William Hootkins, but listening to his voice at the beginning of this video, its sounds just like Michael Bell. If it isn't Michael Bell, I am amazed someone was able to emulate his voice so well. (Upon playing the game for the first time I was sure it was Michael Bell, but the credits are either wrong or this guys sounds exactly like him).

  • @intelligentignorance yeah wikipedia says William Hootkins but they sound way too similar.... if this is William Hootkins then I have definately found myself a new favourite voice actor!

  • why r the monsters different each time?

  • @MajorShepard i dont know if you have playd the game, but if you have, u probobley remember the first chapter of that book you find. it is when you controll thatt "i call him a spartan warrior" in the dessert..

in the end of that chapter, you must choose a red, green or blue glyph.. or artifact.

if you choose green, u get that monster

if you choose blue, u get another monster : )

  • what the hell is this game about? it messes up your game progress, it makes your characters go crazy what the hell?

  • This is one of my top favorite games. Ever. And this is one of the most intense scenes in the game. 2:28 that look when he turns his head is pure madness.

  • lol

    dejavou

  • I love how his voice cracks when he says the word, "darkness" near the end of the video.

  • What's truly sad about this is that Max wasn't totally nuts here. Just despondant that he knew how bad things were going to get and couldn't do anything about them.

  • Perfect game!!!

  • This game is such a gem.

  • it was always pretty creepy how you come across that door in a sanity effect and then Max ends up there in the end.

  • @nintendogamer75 very indeed...always when it happened to me i used to think at myself 'now thats surely very creepy'

  • Max has to be my favorite character in the game.

  • "The darkness will come!" my ass.

  • Maximillian Rovias IS RED SIX, PORKINS!!

  • All homeboy needs to do is get a rat to chew his straight Jacket sleeves so his

arms would be free, walk over to the door and put his hands through the feeding slot, lift the bar up from the door and he's home free to save the world.

  • That's a good idea, but, what if the the rat decides he likes the taste of his flesh, rather than the taste of his straight jacket. Just saying.

  • Perhaps, I am crazy because I am destroyed in this world, and that which I might have flowered well otherwise will have to wait, perhaps

  • One of the best cutscenes from a game with many great cutscenes. You really feel pity for poor Max.

  • This for me was my favorite scene in the whole game, it holds a disturbing image in ones mind. All the other characters were killed off, some via the ancients, some over time, but Max lost everything.

To have everything from your possesions to your respected status stripped from you and then being thrown into a dank cell where even your very mind is taken from you, the guilt of your deeds knawing at you as the rats scamper over your toes, plauged by the knowledge of the approaching Darkness...

  • i think the most sain person was karim he was cool about every thing nothing scared him

  • he was completely obsessed over some woman way out of his league though.

  • karim is pretty cool guy eh kills demnos and doesnt afraid of anything

  • @khalidthekiller That distinction goes to Pious, my friend. He doesn't have a sanity meter at all when he battles Mantorok's horrors in the first chapter. Seeing a skeleton get up and start attacking him doesn't faze him at all.

  • @CTM162 i know isnt he great :)

  • Wow, I didn't remember this game's dub was that good!

(Well, it's been almost 8 years since I last played it...)

  • @rodrigokakashi sounds like the same guy who did soul reaver's voice. that was top notch too

  • Bankarok, pargon, redgermor, pargon, pargon, Ulyaoth, pargon=Damage field

    Long live Ulyaoth!!!

  • @AFENTISTHECHOSEN No way. Pargon is the shit. Without pargon there is nothing. :P

  • RAZIEL

  • His voice actor, Michael Bell, did the same voice for Peter Jacobs in the game, too.

  • PARGON!!!

  • NAROKATH!!!

  • A classic game.

  • that dude screaming reminded me of jim carry screaming

  • i loved this game. why doesnt nintendo make a sequel?!?!

  • it wasn't made by Nintendo.

  • Legally, they can't. After this was released, Silicon Kights (creators) was bought by Microsoft. It's kind of like why Geno or Earthworm Jim weren't in Brawl, even though that would have been awesome.

  • I was wondering why I'd never heard of Silicon Knights... they got absorbed D:

  • Well technically they formed a partnership with Microsoft. Nintendo still owns shares in the company as well as the rights to the sanity system. Silicon Knights are still fully capable of developing a sequel for nintendo.

  • omg fkin Microsoft. First they have RARE and now Silicon Knights? ¬_¬

  • Asylum Attendant ---- Max, Were Sorry to Say that There will be no Pudding at Today's Lunch....

Max ---- MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES!

  • I remember that joke from the Tome of Eternal Darkness! :D

  • You deserve all 20 thumbs ups in that comment

  • Welcome to the mental hospital Max. Let's hope the sanity didn't get to you.

  • I remember right you find out later that he wasn't committed for telling people he actually murdered all of his servants thinking they were corpse thief (its hinted 1 off them may of been)

  • cool they made him go crazy

  • GREATEST VOICE ACTING IN A VIDEO GAME!!!!!!! THERE I SAID IT!!! OMG!!! Still gets me to this day. "MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES!!! You feel his emotions!

  • true, the guy deserves an oscar for this.

  • argh why did i ever sell this game! it was so fucking good.

if they ever make a sequel im instantly preordering that

  • they told they will very likely make a game in the same context, if not a sequel.

  • the part when he is in the asylum whet right to my MP3 player.

  • YEAH one of the best games for NGC

I can not understand why this game havent been continued cuz its a fckn kick ass game

    THE DARKNESS COMEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!!!

    LOL

  • some one can me explain about this games

  • this was the first game I bought for the game cube! I sold it with all my games though, damn I deserve to get stabbed for that. (not without losing my sanity first)

  • two words:

    Fucking. Epic.

  • yeah! :D

  • Yeeeah, babe, amazing description!

  • phenomenal voice acting in this game, especially by this particular character. It's a shame the sequel of this game will never repeat this genius.

  • When this man died, a bit of my love of gaming went with him. He was such a fantastic voice actor.

  • is this that game where you can hide under beds and you have that white dog ?...

  • You're thinking of Haunting Ground.

  • best acting in a video game everrrrrrrr. nintendo and silicon knights need to get to work on the follow up on the wii now. this time they can actually push the hardware more. the gamecube version wasnt even pushed much graphically.

  • quite possibly the scariest game on the gamecube. These videos don't do it justice, once u actually play the game, you'll see why it is.

  • why does it play it more than once?

  • it shows each of the 3 ancients respective beasts separately depending which storyline you chose to follow

  • love this game!!!

  • One of the most underrated games of all time

  • lol i don`t get it how i kill these monsters i kill them and then they just turn into small orbs flying around

  • Yo have to keep hitting them when they rematerialize after flying around in orb form.

  • okay thanks =)

  • thats why, if I pass that (for example, killing that) I WOULDNT think on sayin that to the other people, I would not want to end in a asylum 0_o

  • I PLAYED XELETOTH (spelling) best God in the game

  • I prefer Uluatoh(sp?)

  • Chattur'gha is my fav <3

  • Xel'otath (sp) all the way, her monster designs were often much more disturbing than the others (which is the point seeing as she effects sanity). Of all the ancients, she was my favorite cause she had the greatest scope for maddening fear

  • GREAT,GR8 voice acting

  • he looks like jack black with a powdered wig!!

  • i really shouldnt be wathing videos forn this game my withdrawn symptoms are geting worse

  • is this Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem because i had a different ending with a different charrecter if this was another game whats the name and are there others

  • Yes,it is Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem, and that's not the ending cutscene. If is that what you mean, also you can play this game with 3 different Alignes and more than 8 different characters over 1000 years time period

  • I love this cutscene...and the game as well.

  • absolutly epic

  • i totally agree with you. best game ever.

  • best video scene of the game...period

  • I find it odd that he ended up in that place... Cause... Couldn't he literally show people the city under their house? Because THAT was real.

  • I think that once you murder your servants and come out frothing at the mouth raving like a lunatic, your explanation tends to be lower priority than locking you up.

Even if he did show them, he is still crazy, and there's not anything they could do about the ancients anyway.

  • Oh yeah.... I forgot about the killing of his servants part. lol

    It's been a while.

  • @hardy83 Only certain people could see them.

  • Best. Game. Ever.

  • i remember this game i was 10 when iplay this and all the times this game scared my alot :(

p.s this is the best horror game of gc :D

  • GAMECUBE musthave. Fantastic story

  • What's this game about, anyway?

  • Cosmicist horror centering around the existence of ancient monster-gods and eldritch magick, zombies, eternal darkness etc.

    See: Lovecraft

  • cansomeone tell me what video game insanity is cause this apparently has it in it

  • What? Speak English, man.

  • well according to game trailers, this game has video game insanity and it shows things like the volume changing and a head less guy still walking

  • OK, yeah that's right. I don't know why you call them video game insanity though.

Just search for "Eternal Darkness insanity effects." I don't have a video of them as they are tedious to capture completely.

  • Acutally, searc for ED "sanity effects." This person katrinonus has a Let's Play ED series where she showcases some effects.

  • I have never played this game, but that character with the wig or white hair sounds like Raziel from Soul Reaver games.

  • one of the best games on the Gamecube and one of the best stories ever written for videogames.

  • @driveby1 I agree. This was the best game ever created in my eyes.

  • this is one of my favorite characters of this game

  • This game has the best voice acting ever.

  • Ya know the funny part about this scene was when i was so obsessed with this game, i learned to recite the scene where he freaks out in his cell. So i was asleep in class and just acted out the scene in class and just walked out... this brings back memories.

  • I did too.

  • Why did i choose Chattur'gha? The other two gaurdians looked easier...

  • it IS the hardest of all...

  • I see you played super mario sunshine...X D

  • Wut?

  • looks like I went insane...

  • wth is he checking its pulse "Nope, it's dead!"

  • My favorite part of eternal darkness was the scene when it says your memory card has fucked up

  • Ha ha. I wanna play this game someday. I hear the sanity thing is amazing.

  • Ahh i remember playing it alone at night upstairs. The wolume was going up and down on the screen as my sanity was lowered, and i turned around only to find the t.v remote sitting on a chair.. pointing directly at the televison... oooh creepy stuff - along with the classic bleeding walls!

Man i gotta pull out this game again... i put it away before finishing, but now im older lol i think i can handle it!

  • This scene made me think, especially when he yells "may the rats eat your eyes!" Dont you hear someone say that at the very very start as alex with the rifle?

  • Yeah, that's Max's voice at the very beginning of the game. The game is intended to be played multiple times, so they put stuff like that in that you won't get until you've already played it once.

  • My brother played this game when I was about 9 years old and I loved it, although I thought it was really spooky. I can remember this scene very well, it's great!

  • hey i read somewhere that "sanities redemption" is a a new sequel they're bringing out as a direct sequel to this, not sure if its true though

  • it is not. they will not make a direct sequel, but they will make another game in the eternal Darkness universe.

  • I doubt it. In this game there's a sanity effect that brings up an "advertisement" for Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Redemption, which it's not since the director stated that ED would be a stand-alone game.

  • I remember when playing this game and I was this character. One thing that happened when he went insane was he opened a door and went inside and he was in that very asylum shouting "Let me out of here!" Then he reverted back to the normal room.

  • I LOVE this game!!

  • its funny how michael bell goes from the two dads on Rugrats to Eternal Darkness, Diablo II, and Legacy of Kain.

  • wow he was in rugrats? wowi I thought this game had some cool voice actors, the girl who plays Alex sounds familiar too...

  • It's Jennifer Hale, and with a resume as long as hers, there's no telling where you heard her voice. Personally, I think of Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid (after this, of course.)

  • Hmm.. I haven't played MGS 1 before I don;t know &__& so she is a voice actress and I mustv'e heared her before..has she been in any Resident evil games? cuz that's the only thing I can think of at the moment &__&

  • Not to my recollection, and I've played all the console releases but Survivor 2, Dead Aim and the Outbreaks. So I guess one of those might be a possibility.

I think she's done some TV and Anime as well, and if all else fails, Wikipedia and the IMDB should have her filmography. I hope that helps.

  • mustv'e heared her in an anime then &__&

  • this is the same voice actor that does raziel isn't it?

  • "May the rats eat your eyes!"

This has gotta be one of the best quotes ever...

  • "May the rats eat your eyes! I am now lost to your cause! The Darkness comes...It will damn us all!"

  • was this several different scenes or is the game fucking with your head?

  • It's three scenes, each from a different alignment. The only thing different is the guardian, IIRC.

  • This scene alone makes the game. This was my favourite part of eternal darkness, cause it was so foreboding and chilling to hear max's final monologue. This is by far the most brilliant and chilling game I've ever played.

  • It does sound as Raziel, but imdb lists Michael Bell (his voice) as Peter Jacob. Btw, seems that soundtrack was made by the same guy who did Blood Omen OST:)

  • in the game i played, peter jacobs did the voice of max roivas... but in this video it is not the same VA, and it is clearly michael bell. Pheraps Pal and NTSC version differences? Or just Final version and production beta differences?

  • ah it's the voice of Rhaziel from the Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver

  • Max: So, whaddya think, fellas? All I need is a title. I was thinking along the lines of no beer and an invasion of body-snatching monsters makes Max something-something.

    Servant: Go crazy?

Max: DON'T MIND IF I DO! *draws a pistol and sword* WEHEHEHEHE AHHAHAAHAH nehnehneh wakakaka HA HA HA HA, Scadycat! *makes a face* Bleeeeh! *looks in the mirror at this face* AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! *faints*

  • wow that's some brilliant voice acting over there

  • The story of maxwell roivas is vaguely inspired in the "The Rats In The Walls" short story by lovecraft. I find the "May The Rats Eat Your Eyes" the ultimate reference.

  • You thought so too, eh? I just finished reading that one... *shudders violently* Holy ****, Lovecraft truly is a master...

  • I always thought if Samuel L. Jackson did the voice acting for Max, it would go something like this

Max: May the motherfucking rats eat your motherfucking eyes, I am a motherfucking lost cause. Fuck.

  • Samuel Jackson eh? Hahaha!

The motherfuckin beast was fuckin dead. But not without a fuckin toll on me... That was just one motherfucker, there was an entire fuckin city of them.

  • this game has a really cool story

  • I love this game so much, I hope they make a sequel.

  • just wanted to say Silicon Knights did anounce a new game in development that will be a psychological thriller...perhaps a sequel is in the works?

  • Maybe its a new Eternal Darkness? Check this out straight from the bosses mouth.

"Denis Dyack, designer of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Too Human, said "absolutely yes" in July 2006 regarding the question of a possible sequel in his Too Human IGN blog. He stated that Silicon Knights intended for Eternal Darkness to be a stand-alone game, but the company has always intended to make more games set in the Eternal Darkness universe involving the Ancients."

    I cant wait!!!

  • MAAAYY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES!!! lol i remember this game. definitey a great time. i played through all three. it would be a good bet for 360 to get this.
