@indyfan22k Yes. The liability insurance alone was extremely expensive for the private parks, and in the case of many severe injuries, the insurance wasn't enough and lawsuits ensued. This, combined with the skyrocketing price of land in the late 70's early 80's (at least in SoCal) was all it took for many park owners to sell the land and get out of the business entirely....and just like that skateboarding was back out into the streets.
Over the last 10 years some municipality have built skateparks to keep the skaters off the streets. I just read that Atlanta opened one last weekend. Private skate parks have probably been hit hard by this recession. I know of a few that opened in the late 90s and early 2000s and are sadly not around now.
