Can I safely assume that this is a 2D editor? Can I also assume that if you make a 2D CAD drawing, that the program would work with it? And how does the layer tool work? Has anyone encountered any issues with that?
@minglewithenthusiasm from what i know, it is solely a 2D editor. It opens any dwg drawing but if it is 3D, impression sees is as a 2d drawing (you cant orbit or anything like that).
@minglewithenthusiasm It is definitely a 2d editor. basically what it does is that say if you have a 3d drawing you can chose to import model space, etc. the layer tool makes it so you can do different layers on something to make different effects. it's basically an illustration creation program. I use it to make patent drawings.
I loved autocad until version 2000, when they were so profound and powerful and influential that they could have changed the whole computer industry to enable easier design of things. Instead they just made their products more gimmicky. And we are still designing things on what is basically a typewriter interface with a rodent attached to it. And by the way you don't design things first and then decide how they will look in the last 30 minutes, if you really care that is.
@autodeskdk haha, WOW I can't believe someone would compare that. The only thing similar is the visual styles in the real time modeling environment look.
It's hardly SketchUp (which is a useless toy, btw). Yeah, they both have an implementation of NPR. But NPR has been around a long long time. You might as well say SketchUp is a copy of Piranesi. But then maybe you'll say "but Piranesi can't model." Yeah, and neither can Impression. Or maybe SketchUp is a copy of NPR Reyes, But NPR-R was much more object aware and had more NPR style ability. Or maybe SketchUp is a copy of a couple SIG-Graph papers or masters theses.
You do not know anything about Sketchup or Autodesk. Autodesk is a parent company that buys smaller companies and export their ideas into their own business model. Sketchup is an original program built from the ground up... There no question about that! Everything Autodesk has product was someone else work Revit, Impression, and the likes. You can easy do a research on Autodesk to find this out. Archicad is original-Autodesk Revit is a copy of Archicad fact!
On second glance, I hardly see how your rant was relevant to anything I said. Still, this is an insult swap, I guess and I have to come up with something to make you feel validated. How about "learn to read"?
What do you mean learn to read? You stated that Sketchup was a useless toy. Then you go on a rant about the Sketchup being a ripoff of other programs... If anything, you should learn to read yourself! Or maybe you should keep your comments to yourself.
my dad is an architect and have made tons of designs using sketchup and have made quite a few commercial and residential buildings with it, so i guess its either he is a miracle worker or maybe sketchup can actually do the work...
hey does it work as well with revit?

Not compatible with Windows 7.
Autodesk just chooses to ignore this incompatibility. Very frustrating.

@pooanddoo
There's a hotfix for W7, google it

let's clear things up a bit....
-autodesk impression is nothing like sketch-up
-you can compare sketch-up to 3d studio max, or maya
-autodesk impression is just for presentation purposes (NOT MODELING)

i dont know if you're refering to impression.... but its not a modeling software.... it's more like photoshop... for .dwgs

Yes Autodesk keep COPYING sketchup. Since you cant think of your own ideas. You will never make a product as good as sketchup.

I agree with you!!! I love sketchup too, too bad I still have the basic version. :(

Thanks for the insult, excellent wrap up to your rant which I found poorly informed and of varying degrees of false (from "utterly" to "kinda").
