it was 1974, a big hit at the time in JA. although this 7" is on US-based Steady Records, the JA version originally came out on WIldflower (a sublabel of Federal).
Actually its got its comical side but the singing and the music, especially the trombone make it a sweet little song. I can see the connection to Pluto Sherington, especially to the song "Dat." Sweet reggae music.
This is one af my favorits! It´s not so easy to find this track now adays. Good work man. I listen to this song atleast one time aday, Thank you! Keep up the good work whith speading good music and good wibes to the world! One love
Technically, it's really called "Duppy Or Gunman" as according to the original Federal logs and other issuances on original albums, compilations, or subsequent releases and reissues.
It's possible that the original JA Federal 45 counterpart also said "Duppy-Gun-Man" because Steady Records (the direct US liaison for Federal) followed the text exactly as it was written on the original JA pressings, but it was made clear later on that the title was supposed to be "Duppy Or Gunman".
the original Wildflower release (which was Paul Khouri's subsidiary label under his dad's Federal empire) was indeed "Duppy Gun-Man". the finer points of a song's title were often thrown under the bus with JA record pressings.... they probably went with whatever was scrawled on the tape box.
And TELL ME, oh PLEASE tell me, that I'm not the only one who's observed that Ernie Smith and Pluto Shervington -- both Federal legends -- sound almost exactly alike!!
well, a lot of the personnel were the same session guys at Federal at the time - Paul Douglas, Val Douglas, Robbie Lyn, Willie Lindo, etc... i think they have a similar style of writing, but they sound different enough to me.
Pluto used to play the hotels like the Pegasus and Courtleigh Manor in Kingston in the mid 70's, as a kid i got to see him a few times - my mother was a big fan, had all his records.
I asked a couple of singers on a beach in Jamaica (Bloody Bay) to sing some Pluto Sherington and they were wicked and also sang this (apparently he is on here somewhere as well as Ernie) :D
Met 2 guys on the beach at Bloody Bay - Derek and Jack - playing tunes with guitar and maracas for tips - told them we liked Pluto Shervington and Peter Tosh and they played Ram Goat Liver, African and then this - Pluto is on the vocals too! Best memory of JA - the people. Love 'em!
I am loving your collection of tunes! I first heard this tune when I saw an episode of Oliver at Large (Jamaican comedy) and this was playing in the background! Big tune!
am 18 and i LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
