its called a pickup cover. it was thought that since pickups are magnets. there would be alot of like magnetism lost to the air. so then they designed a cover similar to the way a transformer works uknow those iron cores they keep the magnetic field trapped with it. supposedly..

commercial doesn't always mean crap, for example, I got Fender SQUIER (SQUIER, mind you) fretless modified jazz bass for $240, a steal if you ask me, because the sound is great for some basic, and some slap, along with options for a more traditional upright bass sound (with some flats on it of course), Mostly when looking at the sound of a bass, much of it comes from the player...
