I always wondered why there was such a long time lag between movements. Is it a re-calculation thing (based on sensor input)? Otherwise it would seem easy enough to make all of the movements more fluid.
This just demonstrates how amazingly exact and coordinated human joints and muscles really are. This robot is amazing, *especially* if this was all done autonomously.
"This" is what's coming out of the MIT AI right now? OK. But isn't telling a robot to locate a bowl, pick it up, and then mix the contents with a spatula pretty basic?
@CherryBlaster416 Nope. I am part of a robotics team at the high school level. It takes us months and months will lots of hours and manpower to make a robot that just puts balls into buckets or puts an inner tube on a hook.
Very impressive. This will be a video we will show our grandkids to show that once upon a time robots had difficulty with such tasks, as opposed to the ease with which robots will do it in 50 years time because of this very research.
Sadly, I don't think China have anything to worry about; we'll still need to use cheap foreign labour. Also, they've probably got all the research and plans on how these were made (hacked off the net) and have put some of their 6 million graduates - this year's number alone - to work on it.
That doesn't even resemble a cookie. It's a bunch of stuff dumped in a pan. You notice they don't show anything but a small edge of the finished product, and the guy can't even pick up a piece without it crumbling. It's intriguing and amusing, but I'd hardly call it baking cookies. I can do a lot better and will only charge $200,000.
I know it's impressive, but still. It couldn't have spooned the cookies onto a little baking sheet? Also, those cookies looked piss poor. Basically they just baked, they didn't spread out or anyhting, Also I didn't see you add any egg or milk, just butter.
If you don't think this is impressive you're underestimating the complexity of the task. Mapping the area, finding the correct object, manipulating them within a tolerance so as not to create a gigantic mess - all incredibly difficult for a machine.
That said it does show how far we have to go before we build the machines that will eventually wage war against and destroy us.
@arfroot If a milling machine can mill a design to near perfection, why can't this robot gently stir ingredients gently? The programming must still be missing a few key ingredients. haha.
@kizkoool At least they're getting their money's worth out of the $150 Kinect sensor tacked onto the top of it. It is a good start for these students though, on a truly hard problem. I fear, however, that about the time these kids get into the swing of things their focus will have to turn to the narrow distractions of the thesis process and subsequent pursuit of worldly things. In another 3 years, some new kids will, at best, comprehend the papers of their predecessors and do somewhat better.
