Hi there im a long time fan of your videos and just wanted to ask a couple of questions. Does the mazda 3's stereo play casettes because I own a 2005 model and its says TAPE/MD but it only plays mini discs as cassetes dont fit? how does this work with yours
@HENSIM110 Mazda had both a cassette player and MiniDisc player available. Both share the same button, but you can only have one player installed at a time.
The cassette player does have music search since this is a full logic cassette player, you just have to use the seek/track APC buttons. I think that tape players do last better, even though most of us don't use them. I have a 2001 Honda CR-V SE with CD and Cassette Tape, and the CD Player would not work in cold weather. You actually got a really great audio system.
@ProtegeTuype I do too, when recording radio airchecks and playing them back.
it's a dieing medium, but it has great potential if you have a really high-end recorder that can reproduce the original sound to its greatest potential and quality.
A couple of quick questions, @vwestlife 1.) Can you perform the same tricks as in the "How to Annoy a Mazda3 Owner" video? 2.) Is that a Bose radio? The new radio sounds a lot better than the old one.
Also, nice radio, a hint, you can press Presets #1-#6 to select a slot for the CD.
@fanowner12 Yes, most of the same tricks work. This car is not equipped with the Bose system. I don't think the radios were different anyway. The Bose system just gives you an external amplifier and upgraded speakers; the radio itself is the same.
ha, funny you should mention the aux input issue, My dad has an issue where he's trying to add Sat radio to his truck but it also has the rear-seat DVD and those two things don't agree with each other. You get a special adapter but it only lets you use one at a time.
If I had the Aux In I'd probably just plug in a Walkman for tape playing. But my car still has its original cassette deck. I used a tape adapter once but it wore out and squeaked like hell after time.
That is probably one of the last car radio's manufactured that I know of that utilize cassette players. When I was 10 years old, I was distraught to find out that my dad's 2004/2005 Nissan Altima only had a CD player, no cassette!
Thats a nice ride. I have a casset player in my 96 oldsmobile Cutlass SUprem SL sedan, but the radio is POS. I replaced the speakers becuase they were on thier way out, and soon I will replace the radio.
OH BTW you can buy aftermarket radios with cassets as I discovered not to long ago. I think thier sold at Parts Express.
I remember the 2001 JVC cassette player I installed in to my 1990 Ford Fiesta 1.1 in 2002. The bass output was worse than the original Ford tape deck. I had to swap anyway because I allowed a wire connected to the positive terminal of the battery (long story) to touch the metal casing and it shorted out. It never worked again which was fine by me.
Those upgrades looked like they cost a fortune. Especially because you got that rare cassette player. I love those alloy wheels you got there too. :-)
You can get tape decks for new Fords, I believe only the trucks though. And in a way, Mazda is Ford, haha. Midrange controls is nice too, even though I don't use it.
@Jallge i've had one of those radios here for repair (jammed CD player).
The amp IC puts out 14Watt RMS per channel (4 speakers/channels). Peak output of close to 24W/Ch. Doesn't sound like much "oomph", but the factory speakers are pretty high efficiency (decibel per watt)..
all in all.. a matched system. solid amplifier that isn't bullshit-rated (like so many companies do these days.. PMPO and "max. peak combined" ratings..) and good high-efficiency speakers..
@Knaeckebrotsaege I tried putting in aftermarket speakers with the stock stereo, and the result was much lower efficiency and less bass. So if you're going aftermarket, you really have to install both the speakers and the head unit at the same time, in order to have an effective upgrade.
@Knaeckebrotsaege do low power amplifiers use less power? if they do, i can imagine why mazda would put that kind of stereo in this car. i'm not too suprised that you're repairing one with a jammed CD player, i've always imagined that the CD's that i would put in, would disappear into the dashboard. never to be seen again.
@Jallge to some extent, yes. that's also why those huge aftermarket amps need thick power wires and sometimes an extra capacitor.
but don't confuse the Watt-output with how much power the amp. is actually using. a lot of it gets wasted as heat.
the factory radio i was fixing had the CD sled messed up. a small metal pin came out of its pocket, so the mechanics couldn't push the CD back out.. owner got tired of listening to the same CD for over a month, so he gave it to me to fix it *lol* :D
@Knaeckebrotsaege i can just imagine listening to the same CD over and over again , it reminds of when the mechanism that brings the cassette in on my vcr broke and the only tape i could watch was the simpsons one stucked in there!!
I didn't know you had a mazda3, I've driven an '04 they're pretty nice but they SUCK in snow so be careful! but at least you got the last of the good looking old body style, the '09 and '10 models are BUTT UGLY!
@coolbluelights Mine has done OK in the snow so far. Maybe the one you drove had crappy tires? That makes most of the difference in a car's bad weather traction.
@DrCassette I found out it does have automatic music search for the cassette too. You use the seek up/down buttons to find the next or previous song, just like on a CD.
its 2010, who still has cassette?

Shame. I still have a crap load of good cassettes with rare material. I'd hate to not have a means to play them while I was driving around.

@029622558 Yes, the hidden features (signal strength meter, speakers going around in circles, etc.) all work the same.

cassette players can be seen in 2003-2007 Muranos

ooh awesome!
It's cool how you could get a car stereo with both CD and cassette. I remember seeing that a lot in the early 2000s.
and an in-dash CD changer?! that's crazy how a CD changer could be so compact. How does that mechanism work?
it would be awesome for a road trip or something.

Admit it, you REALLY wanted that minidisc player. :P
You might be able to regain the aux-in by using an adapter on the SAT radio connector.

a cassette player in a 2008 car, thats pretty unusual. and the amp must be pretty powerful if it's loud on volume 12
