Clearly being education minister has not enlightened this prick, one hopes flag burning will be made a retrospective law one day & we will nail him ! A most despicable & unforgivable act against another nation Peter !!!
Well - there's no such thing as a bad Oils album (just some's better than others - like chile :) - but if you want my opinion - and I know you do - my vote goes to "Diesel and Dust" as their best. And yes I have seen them live and will never forget what was one of the best two concerts ever attended. Cheers! Bazza
Good song by on the great political bands of the last 30 years. Too bad though that so many of these 1990's videos for great songs had to get ruined by directors filling them up with obnoxious hipster doofusses dancing around. Kind of suck because it distracts greatly from the purpose of the songs.
typical US styled vid from the time- they know their market i guess and so this wouldv'e played better to MTV or orther garbage shows the label wanted to push the clip to.
this video is absurd, the renta crowd! ha ha - Prob to US eyes seems fairly normal to all other clips that they wouldve' seen around the time but to anny Aus viewer we end up having a chuckle. such a forced clip, suckers,, i still refer to all US as "Seppos"
Excellent song, however, I do not like the video. I think it misses a great deal of what the song is about. It is pretty absurd to sing this song down a bridge in NY... And I really loved Albert Namatjira's paintings as background on the original one... specially when they were singing the parts of Namatjira in custody... anyway, thank you for posting this version, it is interesting to know the facts too.
@chapistrana I agree, I like the original a lot more but being a big Oils fan myself it's cool to see something like this that I never knew existed before today. It also just seems... I don't know, fake somehow. Like the crowd's faking it or something. Can't put a finger on it, hmmm..
This is absolutely my favorite Oils song, ever. This version of the video is just fine - I probably like it a bit more than the other version, which is also just fine, itself.
I like this video much, MUCH better though, for one simple reason which hasn't yet been mentioned, the most important thing... THIS version has the jet fadeaway at the end, which the other versions don't... which puts it MILES ahead of all the others. End of story!!
Great video, better than the other FOR sure!! Much more true to the OILS and not some acting job that leaves you disconnected from the bands true INSANE energy!!!
Pretty devastated to c that clip aye. Shocked! Thats my fav Oils song. What the f### happened to the original vid? What a waste. Looks fake. Whats with the fake clapping? We dont even c Garretts bald head. Original clip is far superior. This version kills the song. I didnt even know this version existed. Did it really cost 250 bucks? Shouldnt have let that happen. Let it burn!
Top marks for the song - better live. Love the instrumental break
This IS the original video, filmed in March 1993. And maybe that's why you don't see Peter's bald head. It was a little chilly, but not too bad. I know; I'm in the video. You should have no complaints about this video. The whole Brooklyn Bridge theme was amazing!
get over it. i am new to the oils. while i enjoy both videos, i like this one better - the other video looks studio and staged - this one gives a better sense of a live performance.
I came to YouTube to look for the US version of this video after reading about it in the 'Beds Are Burning' biography of the band. The background of this video is that the head of their US record company didn't like the Aussie version, so they paid $250,000 (!) to film another one in NY under the Brooklyn Bridge. Rob Hirst said about the video - "I found it absurdly extravagant and culturally insulting...I felt like we were dancing on Truganini's grave" I think Rob needs to lighten up :)
I'll forgive Rob, he's a hero of mine in terms of drumming.
Having said that, seems a little strange how when they wouldn't even go on Countdown in the late 70's and early 80's that they'd bow to their US record company and look like they were enjoying it.
he probably found it more important to get the message across, rather than the immages in the movie. he prioritised one way, you might do it annother.
@maffjon Not all of them look like they're enjoying it. It looks like Bones shoved a lemon in Rob's mouth before taping this one. And this is a guy who ALWAYS gets into it too, it shows that Hirsty had a problem with making this video.
He's obviously a passionate guy and the song is probably deeply personal. If he lightened up then he might never write songs like this in the first place. If a US record company asked me to do another version I would tell them to get f*cked. But I'm just a bloke with a computer and a desk.
@webofdesign Perhaps, Rob could lighten up a bit. But you must bear in mind MO's strong political beliefs and social convictions. They were never a rock band obsessed with establishing an MTV image and glitzy packaging, they were messengers raising social awareness thru their lyrics and music. Spending $250K to RESHOOT a music video would seem ridiculous to anybody who's got a modicum of artistic integrity.

You'd never know the Oils had American fans too from reading these comments...
A bit rough on us Yanks there, guys. Not our fault they filmed this one is NYC for whatever reason.

well that's the point of a song like this I didn't know what they were singing about
and so I looked it up
I thought this video was great for this song, just show the band playing
to me it's more natural than trying to dress them up and make them act, most bands can't that's why they play music instead, right?
thanks for posting this video, I thought it was their best song too

seems a bit odd singing about road trains, the roma bar, namatjira, monarchy, union jacks remaining and truganninni, underneath brooklyn bridge!
guess they had to give the yanks something to make them feel at home. They would have utterly no idea what the f*&k hes singing about!
but what a brilliant piece of music!

Earth and Sun and Moon is a masterpiece, better than some of their more popular albums in my opinion.

It is a masterpiece. Just out of interest, what would you say are their more popular albums (ignoring Diesel And Dust of course) ?
maffjon 1 year ago
@maffjon Probably 10-1 or Head Injuries. Worldwide popular I'd say Blue Sky Mining too.
