  • im loving this . i have been a zorn fan since the bungle days when i first heard him and this is just amazing

  • OMG!!!!! my idol zorn with the master ribot who plays a beatles cover happiness is a warm gun masters of masters great jew and jazz i love it...

  • Really great...

  • i can create this with 4 people and have

  • John Zorn is creating a new song with elements that have been used before in his songs. It has the same name as a song that they have played before, but it is not the exact same song. Zorn conducts them-he figures out when he wants parts to come in again and how he wants this rendition to go. So, I would not say that it's terrible that he conducts them.

  • People, this is music, to each his own interpretation of it. Just make sure to enjoy it.

  • @ those making comments about reading music, are you jealous that they can read music? I compose music. Sometimes I play it. Then I write it. Then I read it, as I play it again. I composed the song, I certainly know it. You are all idiots, and you know it, yet here you are reading this to remind you.

  • ojapierdole, kiedyś takie rzeczy emitowała TVP ;o

  • We just taught this song on violin in a greek University...

  • i've got his all performances at warsaw jazz days, ahh its tremendous

  • why don't you clowns just listen...

  • you guys are both buttholes

  • this sounds like jewish music

  • This is what happens when classical musicians try to play jazz... it doesn't work. All of them are still reading the chart.

  • @Parvenu333 with that attitude, I doubt you truly appreciate jazz. I found the violin solo pretty damn cool myself, his swing was lazy as hell.

  • @53160 You're an idiot. This song doesn't swing, it's a latin groove...

  • @Parvenu333 you are clearly the idiot for calling it jazz in the first place then. Also, swing is not only used to define a genre but to describe time in general. But I'm sure you, being such a huge expert on jazz, already knew that. Jazz snobs are ironically missing the point of the music completely. Now go hide under your bridge again troll.

  • @53160 You make me so angry.

    1. Swing is triplet based time. When musicians play swing time, they subdivide a triplet in their head. Simply put, you're dead wrong. You're so fucking dead wrong. In fact, if you had said that 1+1=6 you would be just as wrong as you are right now. You're simply stating facts that are not true.

    2. Swing doesn't constitute jazz. This is jazz, and it doesn't swing. End of discussion.

  • Back to my original comment, anyway.

You don't read charts when you're playing jazz for real. In fact, reading a jazz chart is referred to as "faking a tune," hence the term "fakebook," which is a book full of jazz standards.

If you want to play a tune, you learn the tune. These guys reading from a damn sheet clearly aren't prepared to perform the tune, and they can't listen as well while reading, hence why Zorn has to conduct them. They're playing jazz like it's classical music.

  • @Parvenu333 Ironically you sound like you've listened too much to theory teachers and too little to music. I don't care if people are reading if they're making music.

  • 1. You don't know what irony is

    2. I listen to music all day every day. At least 7 hours a day I am listening to music.

    3. I don't mind people reading music either, but it's a fact that if you embed your mind in the page, you can't pay attention to what's outside the page. If they just have the sheet there for reference, I don't care. But, here you can tell that it's a hindrance. It's an easy tune, so why the hell aren't they looking at each other? Zorn has to conduct them... that says a lot.

  • @Parvenu333 I actually live by the philosophy myself, I never read music when I'm performing, but it doesn't matter to me if other people do it. I've seen plenty of respected jazz musicians read while performing.

  • @Parvenu333 Says Parvenu333 (a youtube user) regarding John Zorn (a hugely famous and successful composer). Stop making me laugh man, I'm trying to listen to this amazing music.

  • marc ribot is sexy

  • Well, João Gordo by Ratos de Porão recommended John Zorn and it's really amazing ! Tks, João ! :)

  • effe me John Zorn is SUBLIME!!!!

  • Nice song, but I agree the solo part was sometimes a bit sloppy.

  • this "music" is shit! i swear most of the time this dude just improves and hits random notes for no reason

  • @pieisdelish1 ahaha wtf dude, go back to justin bieber, this is too complicated for you

  • @pieisdelish1 listen you fuck, you don;t know a got damn thing about music, do you do EVERYTHING the "the man tells you to do or what? If this is america and we have "freedom" why take freedom out of the only thing that really is free... music. Go put in yr Dreamtheatre (aka wrose shit ever)...

  • @janetathensbay

you should look up beyond the pale!!

  • @janetathensbay OMG! They were my exact thoughts when I discovered John Zorn about 5 minutes ago! It's sensational isn't it! It felt as if a massive weight had lifted it and I'd finally found what I was looking for! :D

  • @janetathensbay check out electric masada if you wanna blow it up to the next level

  • were is this kind of music from? i can hear a lot of eastern sounds and jazz of course, but where exactly?

  • weel you've got it absolutely right. It isn't really from anywhere - written by John Zorn an American "jazz" Saxophone player - I guess what he wanted whith this music wa to mix klezer/eastern and jazz :)

  • in masada john zorn tries to create a jewish sounding music using the phrygian dominant scale

  • John Zorn is an American/Jewish composer, and Masada is him dealing with his Jewish musical roots thru Jazz ...genius shit, of course. Many crazy stories about the actual beginning of Masada

  • Thank you very much for having such skills and good taste!

  • EXCELLENT MUSIC

  • This is jazz, I love it! Really amazing. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Sure, why not. Just don't mention it to Zorn, he would disagree.

  • Hi! I'm curious: Does anyone know what happened between 4:05 and 4:08 ? Joey Baron cracks up, then John Zorn is laughing, and everyone is laughing or smirking until like 4:30 ? 'o' I've watched this so many times that I noticed this distinctly...... Can't wait to see Bar Kokhba live next month!

  • They are just happy doing their music :)

  • well... joey doesn't crack up, i think zorn gives him some kind of signal and since joey interpretates it some strange way, zorn starts laughing^^ and then everybody else is looking at zorn and starts in. that's how simple it is^^

  • SO Good! I Love how happy Zorn looks. I guess I would be too if my band was so amazing.

  • 10 years now !

The day I ve seen them playing live

My life & perception of music change 360

    Thunderring Heartquake

    LIFE!!!!!!!!!

  • 100% AGREED -- same experience

  • genial!!

  • SUCH a great video. I love how Zorn always just looks like a big kid playing with toys.

    Wonderful wonderful stuff.

  • fuckin awesome... feldman rules.

  • Joey Baron! :0 :) ;0 :!

  • fuck! :0 :) ! but why does Marc Ribot look like he was punched in the eye? :0

  • he always looks like this. He's been punched by life.

  • adoro questa musica questa canzone e Zorn, ringrazio Ribot x avermelo fatto conoscere.....spettacolare

  • this is sooooooooo incredible!!! Zorn has just gone down in my personal favorites list as a genius composer, and the band is genius as well!!!!!! I am at a loss for words on how brilliant this composition is!!!!! Cheers!

  • Fuckin good, fuckin genious, fuckin relaxing, fuckin jammin'...FUCKIN AWESOME!!! :D

    I LOOOOOVE J. Zorn.

    5 Stars for you, Johnny!

  • Rewelacja!!! Piękne:-) Kocham skrzypce Feldmana:-)))

  • John Zorn is a genius

  • Zorn's Klezmer stuff really, really makes me wish I was jewish.

  • this is great.

  • what a musiciens!

  • do they do the string quartet covers of manson tool and nin, is it them without the percussion and drums

  • can someone (with a nice ear) help me to figure out the bass line of this, i guess that starts with g, bflat, bf, d, eflat, a, d, ef.... im only asking for the first 13 seconds, im gonna try by myself but i think there are many musicians watching this so...or maby this is just a waste of time??

  • it`s definetly not a waste of time if you figure out the bassline for yourself! i`d recommend a program called "transcribe" - it slows down the audio without changing the pitch - really helped me a lot

  • of course, you`ll have to get the audio from youtube first :)

  • then you didnt see this video, ass hole, because this was innovative, interesting, and complicated if you knew how to play an instrument

  • ooommmgggg these guys fuckn rock, fuck u haters

  • awesome!

I´m going to see john zorn that saturday in a concerto at coruña and I´m impacient, this is one of my favourites jazz musiciens

  • concert* xD

sorry, I´m from spain and my english isn´t very good :S

  • for years now I've found it quite funny that my favorite John Zorn music does not have John Zorn. no insult... I'm simply not a fan of screechy sax. If you doubt the talent however, you are a fool.

  • evrything what can you ever imagine about music did not concern zorn's projects!! he's unpredictable!!

  • Amazing!!11

  • wawaweeewa !!!!

    Awesome !

  • that violin player just gave me an eargasm

  • A natural reaction when hearing a natural virtuoso like Mark Feldman. :)

  • hes great but i like the chellist better.

  • They are both fine players, but I'm with you. Erik Friedlander is an unbelievably good improvisor. Feldman is good, but too often he goes back to the same tricks and gadgets in his solos (listen to him on some of John Abercrombie's discs). Though... even Friedlander is kind of hemmed in with this formulaic music.

  • thanks for this poophat

  • Fried sounds amazing!

  • I think it would be neat to have a book of sheet music of some of Zorn's music.

  • Hello! Anybody knows where I can find a music score of this music?))

  • There is a video available from eMule made by the Polish TV (Warsaw Summer Jazz Days '99) covering the whole performance - ca. 1h 30min. Get it! - it's awsome!

  • Wow my gosh, Mark Feldman is so good in this.

    They all are!

  • great musicians!

  • is it from some DVD or from TV ?

  • I need to hear more of Johns compasition peices now. how many of these did he do?

  • like 500, if you means songs like this.

  • I just love that guys - but sadly I never saw them live and perhaps I never will - they didn´t play in germany the last years.

  • Great !

  • Mmm, so nice.

But what is Zorn doing there? Is he just clowning around or is he supposed to be directing?

  • He's apparently the conductor

  • Yeah, "conducting" is what I meant to say. It just doesn't look exactly like that's what he's doing. But then, nobody has accused him of being conventional.

  • He wrote the piece. It is partially notated. If you notice, the players will come in and drop out according to his hand signals. John Zorn is famous for conducting. He invented multiple systems of hand signals for "conducting" improvisors, used most famously in his "game" pieces, Naked City, and Masada. I'd never seen it done so the video was fascinating.

BTW, there are some downright great Naked City and Masada vids on YouTube!

  • That's interesting. Makes more sense now. Thanks.

  • Thanks for posting this amazing piece of work

  • Top-notch musicianship. Absolutely amazing.

  • Absolute top dollar..gorgeous..!!

  • Beautiful. Very exotic.

  • Wonderful! I love it!
