I came looking/listening for Michael Ondaatje character hero- The Cat's Table. Awesome book- funny character claims to be former Bechet sideman. Awesome music
Definitely reminds me of a stumbling, fumbling feel, sort of put into a parody or satire. I don't know why, but it just fits so well with today's world.
That was probably on a wood Albert system clarinet, judging from the warmth of the low notes. I don't think a score ever existed for this tune, he didn't read, it was improvised. His sax playing was like nothing you ever heard in your life!!
Love this sound, his soprano, his music. Just listened to this recording 4 times then added to my playlist. Harlem Renaissance in his blood. America's loss he left for Paris where he could develop his art more freely.

I'll Kick your WHITE ASS, but KISS IT, first, This jumpin' song eclipses any and ALL race barriers...Sidney gets shafted, but he gives it back...in SPADES!!
The ending ROCKS like nothing you will ever witness...in ever your black/white life...Where is Guiliani when you really want to have someone to kick some ass?
According to "Pioneers of Jazz - the story of the Creole Band" by Lawrence Gushee, the piece is "Egyptia", an intermezzo by Abe Olman, 1911, and was in the regular repertoire of the Original Creole Band from 1914 - Bechet picked it up when he was with them in 1918. The recording is a portion of this early piece of exotica.
I'm so glad I found Sidney Bechet. As much as I love modern music, something about mid-1900s jazz is just so relaxing and soothing, and Bechet is a fantastic musician.
I love this. Play it loud in the morning , thank you. Heard it on KJazz Cal State Long Beach 88.something and fell in love. Kop Khon krab, la gon. That is Thai for thank you and good night, sir.
Its the year of the TIGER, not the year of the dragon, krahb. QUESTION: How do you go from bashing the no-planers on the 9/11 conspiracy sites, to appreciating a talent like Sydney Bechet? Just asking.
What's your proof that it was an inside job? That's obviously a pretty bold claim. How long did you spend at ground zero in Newy York researching your claim?
@MrPontiusPilate you don't need to go to New York for the hard evidence that 9/11 was an "inside job". money/paper trails, ignored warnings from detailed intelligence reports received months before the attacks (including the infamous PDB), simple background checks on the hijackers, etc. the evidence says that 9/11 was a global inside job involving the Bush Admin., the CIA, the Pakistani ISI, the Kingdom of Saud, etc. As for my beliefs, i use logic. But this is not MY claim, simply regurgitated.
@MrPontiusPilate assume away my friend. if you look at the evidence it supports my statements. don't take my word for it, prove or disprove it to yourself.
Balboa or (slow) shag to this on Valenitnes Day. Ja Ja Ja as my friend said, ra trii sa wat krahb. HA HA baby, good night. Sa wa dee pi mai in the year of the dragon. Krahb.
