boyjohn : The original by The Royal Guardsmen came out in late 1966. When did this sound-a-like version by The Peter Pan Singers come out. I believe 1968 was this cover version. Is that correct? You can't deny that there's very little difference in the two recordings. This one's slightly faster, the voices are a little higher pitched, and the lyrics are slightly different.
One could easily mistake this for the original. Tell me what you know
@cmulwee001 I believe that this album came out in the spring of 1967. The "Return of the Red Baron" by the Royal Guardsmen hit the charts in late Feb 1967, so this album would have to have come out slightly after that since it includes that song also.
@boyjohn Well, here's something I have found. One You Tube user has a version by The Irish Rovers, and claims that their recording is the original even before The Royal Guardsmen. Is this true? And regarding Peter Pan Singers' Cover of "Return Of The Red Baron" unlike "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron" which they copied almost exactly with minor differences, their cover of the "Return of..." is NOTHING like the original. Peter Pan singers did a COMPLETELY different arrangement. Remember that? :-)
@cmulwee001 I don't think that is correct. The album from the Irish Rovers (Children of the Unicorn) that includes the song didn't come out until 1976.
@cmulwee001 Also, there are 2 versions of this album. The first one included Puff the Magic Dragon, and then they replaced that song with Jerry the Giraffe.
@boyjohn I used to have this album, and I remember their version of Do Re Mi sounding a LOT like the version from the movie soundtrack(The Sound Of Music). But since the version of "Snoopy.." is a simulation of TRG's original and not the actual thing, then this DO RE MI must have also been a note for note copy of the movie version. Maybe it was Wendy Williams trying to sound like Julie Andrews. The talented Peter Pan singers could REALLY copy the original..
Thank you. You have to admit, that, from what I recall was a close copy of the movie soundtrack version. I think you'll also agree that "Peter Pan"'s version of "Snoopy" is pretty close to The Royal Guardsmen original, but slightly faster and with minor lyric change. It can also only mean that the version on that album of "Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter" was not the Herman's Hermits recording, but a close soundalike.
@vinylrecord68 .. to be able to do a cover of a song and make it sound close to either the original or the popular version("..Lovely Daughter" was first recorded by Tom Courtenay, HH's just had the hit version). However with PPS' own version, of The Snoopy sequel song ,"Return Of The Red Baron", that was own that very same album they didn't try to copy the original. Instead they did it entirely their own way.
@cmulwee001 You had a re-issue of the album. The original issue included the song "Puff the Magic Dragon". When Peter Pan added "Puff" in their LP line a year later, the song was dropped from the "Snoopy" album and replaced with "Jerry the Giraffe".
No tears here, but this is the same record I, too, played over and over as a kid. I think the rest was cover tunes of other pop songs -- let's see if I remember. "By The Time I Get to Phoenix"...what else? I knew some of these songs from this record before I knew the "real" ones from the radio. Sheesh...good old internet... also "Does Your Chewing Gum( etc.)" and "Tie Me Kangaroo Down"...
This is not the version from this record that I remember, unless there are 2 on the album. This is the Royal Guardsmen version.
I haven't heard it in a long time, so searching here I got very excited, then disappointed. I recall a guy with a good baritone voice singing lyrics like,
"You remember that baron flying high in the sky
Snoopy shot him down with a gleam in his eye
But the baron had leaped from his bloody red plane
@ambariel No it's not The Royal Guardsmen version, but it is a close copy. This is indeed the Peter Pan Singers version. I know they sound alike but The Royal Guardsman version is slower and is sung in a lower register. Also The lyrics are different. In the RGM original "Snoopy Swore he's get that man, so he asked The Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan" This Peter Pan copy goes "So he figured all out A new battle plan"

@cmulwee001 The vocalists for "Do Re Mi" were Janet Anderson and Marian Garvey.

@boyjohn and my copy had Jerry The Giraffe. Was that an original? I never heard it anywhere else.

An almost exact copy of the Royal Guardsmen version, but some lyrics were changed. This version does not mention The Great Pumpkin like the original.
