@lovesblackfeet They were controlled by the ministry of magic, but Voldemort can offer them victims so it is inevitable that they sided with him instead.

The reason they didn't help the death eaters escape earlier is because Voldemort didn't have a body back then, remember that this breakout took place not long after Voldemort had been resurrected.

@Kye2 i get it now thanks one more thing when harry dreamed when arthur weasley was getting attacked by somthink i think it was voldermorts snake when he was getting attacked how come he dident die but snape did

@lovesblackfeet Arthur would've died, but because Harry saw what happened in the dream he was able to tell people that Arthur was injured. One of the portraits in Dumbledore's office then got sent to their portrait in the Ministry where they shouted for help, and Arthur got taken to St Mungos. Snape wasn't so lucky.
