Greatness is a transitory experience. It is never persistent. It depends in part upon the myth-making imagination of humankind. The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in. He must reflect what is projected upon him. And he must have a strong sense of the sardonic. This is what uncouples him from belief in his own pretensions. The sardonic is all that permits him to move within himself. Without this quality, even occasional greatness will destroy a man.
Damn what a scene... scene in 03:50 is like talking to us: "here is the time of the empire, look at this man... it's over... a new era is begining..., era of the Empire".
Thank you so much for posting this. It's my favorite scene from Rome. The look on Attia's face at the end is heartbreaking. I loved Antony (James Purefoy) and Attia (Polly Walker). They were extraordinary together.
4:00 - Historically Agrippa and Octavia married and founded the bloodline of the forthcoming roman emperors after Tiberius (Caligula, Claudius, Nero, etc.)
Atias tears @ 4:44 sum up hundreds of years of human history; "Rome" was and still is the best series of the decade.
@antikoerper256 Agrippa and Octavia never married. Agrippa married Julia, daughter of Augustus, which was his third and final marriage. Yes, historically. ;)
@SlyNicolai Cleopatra was not of Alexander's bloodline. She was a Ptolemy, descended from one of Alexander's generals. And the term is "Legionary". "Legionaire" refers to a member of the French Foreign Legion.
@historicalogicalness Oh but there is problem that by some ancient sources tell us that Ptolemy was bastard of Phillip, father of Alexander, so they were half brothers. And thus she was family of Alexander but of course not decended, his nly son was killed as a child.
Truley EPIC scene, amazing show. I just finished watching the series for the first time, now I'm fiending for more. I'm starting I, Cladius now, hopefully it's somewhat as good as the epic ROME series was.
i like how the eye colors of atia and octavian changed between this scene and the rest of the series. atias eyes usually looked darker but here theyre really light and it reflect how blank she feels and octavians eyes are so light blue in other scenes that u cant read whats on his mind but here theyre darker so u see the pride and determination
The only qualm I have with this series is that it didn't end right here. This scene is glorious and it sums up the entire series perfectly - Atia finally has what she's always wanted only to realize she's ended up alone and miserable and that she has made everyone around her unhappy in the process. That's the perfect ending scene right there, and not the stupid feel-good scene with Pullo and his son that closed the series.
@helgen86 been saying that for years. The look and the music should have closed it out. They should have had Pullos scene right before. HOWEVER, i guess its fitting that it ended with Pullo as it was him and Verinos* whos story these two seasons followed. They influenced events in the show (in some cases made them happen) too much for it not to have been their show.
Its so striking that to see in 27 B.C. Western Civilization is descended from The Roman empire was indeed polytheistic with no hint at all that things could be otherwise. This is a damn good video clip. Atia's speech of strength was powerful and reminds me of how far I've come in life after numerous troubles and travails. Good work HBO.
Most Amazing series EVER!! In the end Octavian looked Atia and his eyes told her '' U cannot control me anymore'' ..... Atia even in the end has her dignity and her grace!!
my one complaint however, is that this season should have ended with this scene, followed immediately by Cesarean and Titus leaving the city, moving the conversation of Titus and Octavian before the triumph scene.
love this scene. I mean, the very last part where you need no words to read what is going on in there heads. And though it is sad that this scene reminds me that the Show Rome will never continue, it also makes me a lil happy because its leaving open the great mini series of I Claudius, a wonderful continuation of this show.
@ocmentos it was a mini series back in the 70's about the life of the Emperor Claudius, from his time as a young man in the court/family of Octavian to his rise as emperor. It basically takes place years from this.
I like the look Octavian and Atia give each other,as if to say-"All that -for all this" I was wondering, are those the corpses of Cleopatra and Anthony on parade,or figures dressed them.
If you think about it Atia pushed Octavian towards power and when she realized - like Cicero did - that she couldn't control him anymore, she was screwed. Although I found Atia to be a bitch (but likeable in some episodes) I really did feel sorry for her.
If you remember Servilia(sp) cursed Atia and said she would only know pain and that was true. Atia was very evil throughout the series and was not a good mother to Octavian or Octavia.
@TickleMehNancy I thought exactly the same when I saw the sad, resigned look on Atia's face as she sits next to her son. After all she'd done, despite having destroyed her greatest rival, Servilia's curse has still won out.
I was watching a program on Discovery about Augustus Caesar (Octavian) and some Roman historians actually debate whether he was actually the first Roman emperor as during his rule he still maintained some of the republician ways. But when Tiberius came into power the republic was completly gone so some of them said that Tiberius was actually the first Roman Emperor. It was an intresting debate none the less.
Maybe so and he may have been a dictator with power but he still had to tread carefully and maintain some of the republican ways when he was in power and had to make many political alliences with many people where as Tiberius ruled as a Ceasar with no opposition or questioning. Basically when Tiberius was made Caesar everyone knew the republic was gone.
@nosrslygtfo because Ceaser had to make himself a god first to the roman people so that by becoming a dictator was seen as something blessed by the gods to the roman people
Octavian being his son didnt need to do that since his father (by adoption) Ceasar had
Its hard to watch this scene without getting teary eyed. I think deep down Atia really loved Antony I also think she knows that its her fault that things turned out this way.She made Octavian what he becomes. She thought she could control him and use him for power but it backfired now she has the most powerful son in Rome yet she has no power herself very ironicly sad.
@underscore0 It's the ending of "Niobe's Fate," a song from the first season. The Second Season recycles a lot of the First Season's music. This same tune also plays during the credits of the Season 1 finale.
