  • wonderful *****

  • I'm afraid I have to be the Emperor's got no clothes little boy in the crowd here. I find this totally unmoving. What I think is needed here is a bigger, bolder voice under control. Emma Kirkby is a superb singer and I know of no singer who falters less in pitch, but to me this is like a circuit of Brand's Hatch in a Ford Focus.

  • All hail, Emma Kirkby. The only performance of this I enjoyed more was the the boy soprano Harnoncourt used in his 1970s recording.

  • this piece is sickkk

  • This piece can be sung at any speed and sound great. But to suit the words it needs to be slower...

  • Her voice is wonderful, and it sounds pretty with this tempo. But it doesn't seem to fit the text. such a sad song.

  • @tonitoplayboy

    ignorante

  • the mastery of Bach's composition should never cease to cause us to wonder at his genius . He is better than the two other B's : Beef Oven and Brahms ... but give me an Hungarian Dance (esp. No. 1) anyday !

  • I like the higher key better...or maybe it's just higher tuning...but it makes a difference. And I think it's a tad quick. BUT. stunning Emma, as always.

  • I prefer the Karajan version. I could friggin' dance to this.

  • @ChocloManx : Try a Hungarian Dance (No. 1) for solo pianoforte.

  • @ChocloManx : In the name of open debate, I will check out the von Karajan interpretation.

  • Her voice is too lovely and refined with this polished rendering, but I am not able to see their tears...

I have a poor experience. That's why I have no idea whether this elegant rendition is "Matthaus Passion" or not...

  • sehr gut intoniert, wunderschöne stimme. einfach toll!

  • definitly, a special moment for us!!! thanks

  • Beautiful!

  • lovely voice, and beautifully sung. Kirkby is a rare treasure!!

  • I've usually sung this at a slightly slower tempo, and it was sooooo difficult to sustain! I like this, it seems much easier on the voice, I would probably still prefer a bit slower than this though given the text and the gravity of it.

  • I have not imagined that BLute nur could be interpreted in such manner.Amazing Artist and Soprano.Bravo.I`m happy.

  • So unforgettable !!!...thank you !!. Cheers!!!, ~Sergio.

  • Is this a recording??

  • I've never heard this aria sung so well. Just marvellous!

    Unglaublich!

  • I don't know where mewnp2 gets his/her info. Dame Emma Kirkby's vibrato is a perfectly natural outcome of an excellently placed voice - if mewnp2 knows what I mean? There's is nothing decrotive about it. Incidentally, it is known that Baroque singing masters didn't like an excessive vibrato, except to show, p[erhaps, some form of emotion.

  • Very nice

  • Semplicemente meravigliosa....

  • love this movie. Roy Goodman is great! I worked with him a year ago. It was very special to work with him! He's serious a great person!

    grtz

  • A difficult aria sung with effortless passion.

  • Kirkby is a Goddess when it comes to style and technique; any significant criticisms show their author's ignorance more than anything.

  • Exactly. Kirkby's use of vibrato is similar to vibrato in the Tallis Scholars. Vibrato, although ornamental, has always been a product of healthy singing and shows a freedom of the voice, which is crucial when singing Bach.

  • In the Baroque style, vibrato was used as a decoration or an ornament. If you listen to the way she relaxes into the vibrato toward the end of long notes, it's perfect and exactly in the style! Besides, the small amount of vibrato that is heard in the shorter unornamented notes is a product of healthy singing and was surely present in period Baroque performances as well as earlier styles including the Renaissance.

  • Simply beautiful....would love to see her with Anthony Rooley doing the lute music.

  • I played the St ´matthew passion in an orchestra on the flute. Its my first year and im only 12!

  • Emma Kirby has sold out from her original purity- vibrato in Bach!?

  • Im not sure if "sold out" are the right words. Nothing wrong with adding vibrato to Bach.

  • you do realise this is a really old recording :D

  • She is an Angel!

  • wonderful interpretation

  • I love that piece, and she sings it very well. Just a clear, focused sound.

  • Lovely, lovely voice, and beautifully sung. Kirkby is a rare treasure!!

  • Amazing to find some Emma Kirkby on Youtube. Such a clear gorgeous voice and the St Matthew Passion is fantastic as well

  • SECOND THAT!!!
