Back in the mid 80s in the afternoons ABC TV was showing some re runs of a kids shows done during the early 80s...so on comes Mark Mitchell later of Con the fruiterer fame dressed as a robot introducing The Innocents with their new song ''Sooner or later'' lol...so there he was bopping along as the band did their song..certainly wish i had the vcr set up for that one..lol
The Fish John West Reject covered this as part of the RRR "Used and Recovered By" series in 1990.. Tassie lads covering as Tassie bands song.. splendid..
come tonight was the follow-up but we didn't have a crack at that...
The Fish John West Reject covered this as part of the RRR "Used and Recovered By" series in 1990.. Tassie lads covering as Tassie bands song.. splendid..
Apparently there was a repeat on rage last sat night of them performing on Countdown doing the follow up ''come tonight'' ..i missed it but did anyone tape it and able to post it here on youtube??
I'm thinking they mean it went number 2 in Hobart/Tasmania. They were big home town heroes. It SHOULD have gone 2 Australia wide but, hey! when did high chart position = good song???
Yes ex Tasmanian Mark Narkowitz from the Fish John West reject covered it, great song pity they had left Tasmania when I was living there may have been the only act I might have enjoyed. Real dilemna on Saturday nights in the Huon Valley contemplating going to parties you either had to be a George Thorogood or Wild Pumpkins At Midnight fan to assimilate, too extreme for me. they looked good on The 7.30 Report on ABC before they went to the I.P.O fest in the states.
Definitely the greatest pop song to make it out of Tasmania. Loved how they built back up for the ending. Finally managed to replace my scratched old 1980 vynil copy a couple of years ago.
Hey I loved this song and have been trying to find it for years!!! We used to do speed skating to this song at the roller rink in the 80's...lol!!! Another song I never forgot!!!
What a fantastic song - I had totally forgotten it ever existed! On checking my musical bible by Gavin Ryan (aka as Brisbane Chart Book 1956-2002) the highest chart position it reached in Brisbane was #26 in November 1980. Deserved better ;-)
This song is one of those songs that continued to bounce around in my head since I first heard it. Hearing it, watching it again, all refreshed, untouched, as though I'm watching on Countdwon again for the first time. What an enjoyable experience. Thanks heaps.
I'm enjoying a bunch of these old Countdown moments currently. Thanks to all of you.
BTW, the American announcer, Rocky Burnette, is one of my favourites.
Beautiful song. This is the first time I've ever heard it. I can't believe it got to number 2. If so, I would have heard it. perhaps it was #2 in Tas. The first I heard of it was a fantastic cover by the Fish John West Reject in the early 90s. Ever since then I've been looking for the original, to no avail until now. Thanks!
yeah great song...I'd never heard it until the Fish JW Reject cover featured on the 'Used & Recovered by' compilation - anyone know where I can get my hands on a CD of this?
Rocky Burnette was the guest host of that particular episode of Countdown. Rocky scored a number hit in Australia with 'Toein' The Line' and he followed it up with another hit in Oz called 'Fallin' In Love'. When 'Toein' The Line' became a success in Australia, America took a bit of an interest; thus the song also becoming a big hit in the US.
Rocky Burnette was one out of many examples of the test-them-in-Australia-before-we-promote-them artists.
Countdown gave Blondie, Meatloaf, Johnny Cougar (aka John Cougar Mellancamp), the Motels and even ABBA their first taste of mainstream success (meaning, chart success - although ABBA were known in Europe prior Aussie success)...
Therefore, Countdown grabbed at unknown overseas artists (to the delight of the artist's manager and label) and exposed them to Australia. Rocky was one of the ones that made #1 in Oz due to Countdown's exposure.
one of the best 1 hit wonders from those beautiful countdown days!!!

The host has previously explained him well.

Thanx 4 this great song ... I've been waiting 4 someone 2 upload this song from Countdown.
This is 1 of my fave songs from 1980 ... tho rare & not well known.
Did it really get 2 no.2 ?? ... I didn't think it charted very well. Also wot do u mean by very teased band ??
I'm very surprised there still together ... not from any OZ success ... r they big overseas somewhere??
retroj25 3 years ago
hi, no worries - glad to have put it up.
Teased: they were backed by some influentail people and although success looked certain, it never happend.
no2: not sure, just going along with what it says in their wikipedia page.
big overseas: no, but they seem to be touring and working in Germany.
Check their wikipedia page.

@nzoz1980 It didn't even make the top 50, it just missed in fact, not sure why it says number 2 on Wiki.

Sadly, the same did not happen for the Innocents.
