Hola, muy bella pieza la que acompaña Olivier Latry. Si a alguien le interesa yo tengo la partitura completa, se llama Dios Reina, de Lucien Deiss, viene en una colección de cantos llamada Hija de Sion.
Hello, very nice piece that accompanies the Olivier Latry. If anyone is interested I have the full score, is called God, Queen, Lucien Deiss, comes in a collection of songs called Daughter of Zion.
Having a "blonde" moment here , but Latry seems to be responding to another organ - I thought there was only one organ installed in Notre Dame - are there 2 ?
No no, the delay in the cathedral is so long that the sound from the organ appears like 10 seconds after he plays. Justtt kidding, I think there are 3 organs at Notre Dame...i THINK...
I'm not sure he's so relaxed, look at his hands moving in his hairs. However Olivier is on of the best organ player in the world, he has the french feeling like Guillou or Cochereau
The piece is by Fr. Lucien Deiss. It was published by G.I.A. in English as "God Reigns". It was part of a collection titled "Biblical Hymns and Psalms". vols. I & II. Sadly these are out of print.
is this a common chant in the church? this may be a shot in the dark, but does anyone know where i could find the music and words to this chant in english? a name or title?
Olivier Latry is probably one of the most - if not THE most - brilliant Organists of our day! And what's even more amazing about him - he is such a very humble and very beautiful human being. I literally "ran into" him outside of the Cathedral when I was in Paris, introduced myself, told him I was another professional organist - he immediately invited me to sit up in the main loft with him during Mass. If you have the opportunity to meet him - please do, you will be a better person for it!!
I love stories like that, MsNewsguy. So often you hear stories about people who have a bit of talent or notoriety and they have the attitude to go with it. Refreshing to hear that someone like Latry is humble, down to earth and kind.
A beautiful glimpse into one of the world's most treasured cathedrals, one of the finest organists, and an organ of great historical importance. Thank you for posting this unique document.
While there is a Gospel Acclamation based on the refrain of this, that is not what is in this video. This is "Dieu règne" by Lucien Deiss. It is hymn # 490 in "d'une même voix". The Gospel Acclamation version is # 215-6 in the same hymnal.
Latry is for me the best interpretior of modern music. Just listen to the way he plays the victimae choral impro by Tournemire. Nobody can play like that!
er... no it's not. Latry is one of the world's best CONCERT organists.. I wouldn't be surprised if he was sightreading the chant and making up harmonization.
This chant is one of the many "alleluia" chants of the Catholic church; this one although is french, and I beleive rather modern; I'll get back to you if I find exactly wich one it is, that I believe is from the 20th century. JW
kensingtonpalace: Like in many large Catholic churches or Cathedrals like this ultimate one obviously the Choir organ accompanies the choir while the Grand organ comments the chant of the mass; read also my answer to contratromba858 Thanks! JW
thanks, that makes sense now. Is the manual he's playing on considered the 'Choir'? Most organs iv played have the Choir on the bottom, the Great next up, the Swell next, then Solos.
kensingtonpalace: the Grand organ of Notre-Dame is not only the Formula1/Rolls-Royce of pipe organs, but it obviously is French Symphonic: logically placed in decrescendo first manual is the Grand Orgue(Great),second the Positif (the Choir in Anglo-American organs) and third the Swell as everywhere; the other higher manuals (as everywhere else as well) are solo sections or ones to be coupled to the lower ones. Wishing you a nice reflexive Advent, all the best to you in Britain I believe, JW.
I think you may have misunderstood jmeister's explanation - the "Choir organ" he refers to is a separate instrument located close to the Choir and played by another organist, while Latry plays the Grand Orgue in the west gallery.
wow, this place must be HUGE. the cantor and choir organ sound so far away. I wish we had more music like this in our church, we're a country church of about 160 attendants and sing mostly gospel hymns, which i love, but chants bring you into a whole new level or worship.
THE CORRECT ANDWER FOR THIS QUESTION: Most English and Modern organs have the Great on the second manual from the bottom. FRENCH ROMANTIC organs have the Great (Grand Orgue on French organs) on the Bottom, then Positif etc......
i see, living in america, that would explain y all the organs iv played w/ more than 2 manuals have the choir on the bottom, then the great. thx (altho it does make more sense to me to have the great on the bottom and decrecendo from there)
No, that is the way French organs are configured. The lowest one is the great orgue; everything can be coupled to that keyboard. Notice how he gets right on the response when the cantor is barely finished....probably to allow for the sound to travel and the organ not to lag. A good video!
Nope! Sorry rlpat88, but at Notre-Dame the manuals are organized (since 1868) in a "standard" 3 manual french symphonic way, (Grand-Orgue, Positif, Récit) then Solo (4th, with Plein-Jeu 32')than Grand Choeur (5th, with 16'8'4' reed chorus) Cheers! JW
The first and second manuals are interchangeable due to the computer system. Nowadays the organ is linked with a simple Windows XP laptop:-) I guess for the pre-registartion sequences. That's why Latry uses the first manual mainly.
i love chants, i don't quite understand what's happening here, is there another organ in the sactuary that the cantor is singing to..then you play for the congregation? it's beautiful!
contratromba858, it is a weekly simple example of High Mass accompaniement (with choir organ) at Notre-Dame. Notice how Mr. Latry keeps looking the inner tv channel screen on the console for to-the-second coordination with the procession going down 65 feet lower and 350 further in the cathedral.
Jmeister, Thanks for that information. However, what I meant is, what is the SUNG mass...i.e. Proulx's 'Community Mass', Haas' 'Mass of Creation', etc. Sorry for the confusion.
Also, when I played the organ at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, there is a similar arrangement. The front organ console is at an angle, so that you can see a bit, but the altar and lectern are obscured by reredos and pillars. Therefore, a camera that hangs in the nave and is controlled by a joystick on the organ console with a CCTV solves the problem. Pretty nifty!

God rules! People cries of happiness, aleluia!
The life won the death, the cross won the hell (my French isn't of the bests because I'm from Brazil)

It is indeed, its quite interesting to hear the organ at the other side of the cathedral also being played! I wonder why they are doing so

The other organ is used to accompany the cantor and choir and is near the choir...the organ we see leads the congregation.

Some serious mix-ups here. Let me put this straight:
- Notre-Dame, 1868-1932: Grand-Chœur, Grand-Orgue, Bombarde, Positif, Récit
- Notre-Dame, since 1932: Grand-Orgue, Positif, Récit, Solo(=Bombarde), Grand-Chœur
- St-Sulpice, 1862-1903: Grand-Chœur, Grand-Orgue, Bombarde, Positif, Récit
- St-Sulpice, since 1903: Grand-Chœur, Grand-Orgue, Positif, Récit, Solo(=Bombarde)
