Joan Baez is truly an American legend. A beautiful artist with so much soul. Her songs make me so nostalgic for the idealism of my youth. She is so powerfully humanistic - I love her so much.
Thanks for this. Amazing, amazing. I had no idea she was here in this country last year. Or maybe I did. Anyhow, someone has already noted here that she has changed the words of "Diamonds and Rust". Anyone who remembers the original text from the 70s (meaning heard it then) is just about punched in the gut when it comes to th new "40 years ago I bought you some cufflinks" ... no more "10 years"; but "I'll take the diamonds" is a witty twist in place of "I've already paid" at the end.
saw her recently in glasgow , she was amazing, great singer and funny between the songs, she's a gem! never sang dixie though? but you cant always get what you want?
Just saw this show in Vicar street - unbelievable, she still shines! She first changed that "I'll take the diamonds" lyric in the Ring them Bells tour... its lovely! Legend.
Right at the start someone says "wow"... I like to think that that person has never heard Joan... knows that name, but never heard her :) just like me a few years ago. (that "wow" person is probably really a massive fan:)
I had no idea she played Glastonbury :D did she do any Dylan? did she do Dixie?
I love this song and her voice!!! It's kinda funny how she changed the ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks to 40 years ago...and the end when she said I'll take the diamond!! Absolutely in love with her!!!!
Thanks for posting this as i didnt make it to Glastonbury but did see her playing these songs live in Tampa in April and look forward to Royal Albert Hall in Oct.What a voice!
It's so incredible to see this video. Joan Baez still singing with such a beautiful voice. I have just about every Baez album including one of her first LPs, "Joan Baez in San Francisco." To me there is no other folk singer with a voice like Joan Baez. I was a fan of Judy Collins before she kind of went into a cabaret type performance. I liked very early Joni Mitchell (60's & early 70's work only) but Joan Baez has always by far been my favourite. Folk singers today do not sing like this at all.
I agree with your comment about Joni's voice & music. She has always been a very heavy smoker.I remember many years ago when I was 19,I was taking a voice class at a local college. The instructor said that heavy smoking will definitely take it's toll on the singing voice & seems to effect women more so then men. This was not a health class. He only spoke about how smoking effects the voice. Joni is a very talented writer but I really feel that her heavy smoking caused deteioration in her voice.
Now then, I must have been stood 20 feet from you filming this! same view , same angle. Diamonds and rust fantastic. Thankyou for preserving my memories. Winston

Agree! Judy's earlier work was more compelling. When she sang in a lower range her voice was more dramatic and emotional.
Joni's voice and music has been a wreck for decades now.
pppppwhen she sang in a lower
