You should develop an armored solar powered clawler to clear the desert. Slow, heavy and powerful, but methodical and capable of taking hit after hit. GPS could ensure it covers 100% of an area.
Your heart's in the right place, but man... you'll never cover an area precisely enough to make this work. Rolling out thousands of these randomly deployed cheap "probes" across the desert would give you false hope about clearing a space of mines. If it's not capable of 100% coverage of an area, it's false hope. Nobody wants to farm on a 95% free minefield. You can rest assured they will want to use 100% of the land they THINK has been cleared. Nice art though. Maybe you'll get a grant.
