  • Next to Neil Young, nobody else can write songs from the heart like Ryan Adams ....

  • @0481870 I get the same feeling from them..

  • @0481870 Jackson Browne man. Check out his acoustic albums. They're are amazing.

  • Kind of looks like Ben Gibbard

  • deep song! omg! I can relate most def

  • Great video. Love the band; no ego, just everybody playing their part flawlessly.

  • I leave Easy Tiger in my car all winter, every winter. Ready for winter now.

  • @tridling Winter is coming.

  • i love that dave has RA on everytime he has a new album and usually lets him 2 songs!

  • 10 people taught themselves to go fuck themselves.

  • delicious....

  • gives me chills

  • you tube.com/watch?v=qApJQYB1-8s This is the best cover 4 all true Ryan fans...

  • w ww .you tube.com/watch?v=qApJQYB1-8s This is the best cover 4 all true Ryan fans...

  • His greatest Letterman moment IMO.

  • He is one of the only real song writers left today.

  • Why do i hear soooo many artists in one song??? The Smiths, Dylan, Young, Springsteen all in a matter of minutes! Well done, Mr. Adams.

  • R. Adams can create startlingly poetic imagery (as seen on '29'), but here it's notable that he chooses to be blunt - without any attempt to romanticize the subject's predicament. Indeed, the reference to the rose/rain/wind is clearly very knowing, and he quickly dispenses with such tired cliches and gets to the boring reality: loneliness, alienation and a sadness close to boredom.

That takes real control as a gifted lyricist - not to be so in love with rhapsody as to elevate base suffering.

  • @Johnny6666 Damn, you nailed it, man. That is all there is to it. So true.

  • white boy has soul

  • feeling sad Ryan was ever able to write such a beautiful song.

  • If cant find me, I am looking for you on market street. Sleeping in a crappy hotel in North Beach. Playing my music in golden gate park while i look for you in the fog. Maybe youll see me on Baker Beach but anywhere i go i the way you move follows me. Maybe she remembers the twilight by the bridge or the dawn in San Francisco, it was love and sublime, while we smoked a joint and Ryan's song filled the time.

  • @hippifly1 what song is this?

  • such vulnerability in this song, so much pain it's hard to look at, but NOT hard to listen to. amazing artist. keep up the courage ryan.

  • 1:34 is ryan sticking his middle finger up haha

  • RA is one of the most revealing song writers

  • Thanks so much for putting this up. It is incredible.

This song, this recording, this band. I can't even put it into words.

  • when did andy dick start playing slide gutair

  • These Letterman performances from the 'Easy Tiger' era are fantastic.

  • I really cant see all these comparisons to dylan!, ryan doesnt sound remotely like dylan if you want a real clone, check out the felice brothers! why the hell does everyone rate dylan as the bench mark, he is a good song writer no doubt but lets face it he isnt a great singer.... ryan is by no means the best either, but he is much much better at conveying emotion is his voice than dillon in my opinion! When adams is at his best he is untouchable!

  • perfection!

  • All in all it was a good run, and seeing as he was so prolific he should have taken all his thousands of songs and picked out 15 -15 awesome tunes and put them on a CD. Then he would have banked and you could say he was Jesus with a better voice if ya wanted to! ;)

  • @amritaherbs You dont know what you are talking about...thats the good thing about RA he can write/play any style. And it dosent seem like you are a RA fan because you would know all his songs and CDs were amazing. Why would only want one cd with 15 songs from him. Every song on his CDs i can listen to over and over again. You are a joke why did you even waste your time posting all that...

  • @N8theGr8888 Nay little poser, I was there from Whiskeytown till now. Not ALL of his songs are amazing. That's been his biggest hang up. To regular peeps it's cool that he plays in different styles but to musicians and real scholars of music we know that recreating or imitating music is nothing new. It happens everyday with 3 chord pop songs, or sloppy punk songs, or a folk singer blowin into a harmonica. That's what seperates real legends form everyone else. You have to do something NEW

  • pompous...

  • @lwmrim educated... ;)

  • I was also saying that Cold Roses was the closest he came to really having a unique sound (all around not just his voice) and with the amount of songs he has on backup he could have easily made 3 or 4 CD's with his top gems and been a legend. Instead he was putting up punk and country (even rap) shit on his website. Like 5 demos worth of BS lol It's cool to have fun but don't piss and moan about "failing" as an artist when you have no one to blame but yourself Ryan. ;)

  • All I'm saying is that claims such as these caused critics to bash him to death because although Ryan was great and had tons of potential instead of trying to make his own mark he kind of rehashed classic styles. Hence the Westerberg, Morrison, Dylan comparissons.

Unfortunately the critics were right and sadder still Cold Roses I think was a little glimpse of Ryan finally coming into his own but as usual it never went anywhere.

  • hate to burst everyone's bubble but coming from a musician and long term Rye Rye fan. He's NOT the Dylan of our age, half the country STILL doesn't know who he is. Ryan wrote more about relationships than social change like Dylan. If you think he's like Dylan cuz he wrote about how he got shot down by Beth Orton (English Girls Approximately) then you're a tool. He is also NOT Gram parsons reincarnated. Gram wrote the book on alt country, Ryan Had 30 years to rehash it.

  • Gram Parsons reincarnated!

  • Gram Parsons reincarnated!

  • i'm a fan of metal....but easy tiger is my FAV record right now.....can you say musical genious

  • Friggin A song!!! I write songs until I'm blue in the face and I've yet to convey emotions like this cat!! How does he do it? Cheers, Mr. Adams!!

  • Hey Sweet Face, I bought myself 'reading glasses' today for the first time so I came home and played this song. Every day I teach myself how to grow old. See you in the 'Love Sub'

  • fuck I love this song.

  • Hahaha, 'Kids..."

  • if you like this, you should check out Dillon Campbell on itunes or cdbaby...

  • this one's better than on the record. so good!

  • so painfully sad, and ryan sings this with such gusto I have to assume he is 4 real.

  • Sweet sweet tears )

  • i love ryan is there anyone who can write like him no..

  • couldnt think of a better artist to get drunk to, after almost a year of sobriety...thanks for writing these songs sir, no one seems to express this despair so perfectly.

  • @soulmanfunk I literally cracked a beer thought the same thing scrolled down and read your post.

  • nice casio ryan haha thats so badass

  • RIP Chris (bass player)

  • this is totally about mandy

  • .......

  • what do you think this song talks about??

  • like this version better than the album, its awesome

  • i concur anoll

  • i can not think of any other artist that can get that feeling of hopelesnes across as ryan adams does that in its self is outstanding

  • Bright Eyes?

  • But I will Always love Ryan. He touches that sadness that we all need to feel, but are afraid to feel too often. Can't wait 'till he gets back out there and starts playing again!

  • Ryan Adams' songs are so beautiful, but they alway leave you feeling empty. I guess that's what's supposed to happen, but I don't re-listen to them that much because of that. Kind of empty songs, singing in the wind, no growth of understanding or wisdom, just pain falling into a vacuum. Very dark with no light. Just darkness, depression, and sadness. I guess that's one way to go.

  • HOLLOWEENHEAD FOREVER

  • this is so very very beautiful

  • I know Ryan Loves Morrissey.but mozzer could never sing or write a song with such beauty and depth..

  • The Cardinals, one of the best bands and one of the most underated! It takes great players to pull off the less is more thing live as they always do. A great version of this song!

  • Letterman loves Ryan Adams.

  • Fucking genius song. I'm 13, and I wish I learned about Ryan Adams earlier, when he was on tour. I want to see him live so badly! Someone message me when he's in Philly please lol.

  • Unfortunately he's on hiatus from touring his own material (from what I've gathered anyway) I've heard that he might be touring with his wife performing her songs with her.

Let's just hope he misses touring and performing his own songs soon and makes a return

  • you are the coolest 13 year old ever.

    RYAN

  • @thesupercool1s - if you like RA aged 13 then there is hope for the world. Stay with him...I have a feeling he will be back.

  • @thesupercool1s - if you like his music as a 13 y.o. there is hope for the world! Stay with him...I have a feeling he will be back.

  • @thesupercool1s please do the world a favor and spread RA to all the kids you age. hopefully this pop bullshit will be gone soon with your help!

  • wow! I'm in love... ;)

  • That Andy Dick is a hell of a pedal steel player.

  • hahahaha lol great one! thumbs up!

  • Possibly the best songwriter of the last 30+ years.

  • SO FULL OF TALENT!

  • this song will make you cry if you let it.

  • i wish he could keep it going, but hes having a break.was never really fully appraicated i think, dint sell that well, played smallish gigs, crowd was never great for him at the shows i saw, great songwriter.

  • The genre of AWESOME!

  • What genre of music is Ryan Adams?

  • Thanks. :]

  • This is off of Easy Tiger...not Gold.

  • I believe it's alternative country

  • Rock and fucking roll.

  • alternative country

  • haha yes the genre of awesome it is but people say that he's country/rock style.

  • wonderful

  • no other song fits me as good as this one ...amazing song from an amazing artist...keep it going ryan adams...

  • Oh my gosh, I cant even begin to say how good he is. & that was live! He is amazing! I've only started listening to him today and already I have totally fallen in love with his voice! He is the best singer I have heard for ages. His voice is just so soft and full of emotion that it makes you stop and listen to every word he says. Justin Nozuka has that quality when singing save him. That is a real talent when you can see how good he is by the silence in the room as people listen to him. Ace! x x

  • good quote at the end

  • Finally, I see that he's better live than he is on his records. It's hard to believe, but it's true...

  • holy effin sheet that's good

  • Why argue over who is better? I have plenty of room in my cd collection for both of these brilliant singer/songwriters.

  • dude tweedy's voice can't hold a candle to this guy, and either can his songwriting skills. i like wilco but they are slightly overrated.

  • I don't care how well he can sing - Lou Gram and Dennis DeYoung have great voices but I'd never listen to their music. I just find that Adams' stuff sounds really forced and cliched. I mean,it's all just a matter of taste, but in my opinion, Jeff Tweedy can write circles around this guy.

  • I just started listening to Ryan Adams but been listening to wilco for a while (NEW ALBUM COMING SOON!) . I understand what you are saying as far as songwriting goes. I have a lot to say about this but before I say anything I'm going to get my facts straight and give Ryan Adams a good listen. to be continued...

  • I like Wilco a lot, I've seen them live and all. But Ryan's much, much, much better than Tweedy IMHO. Wilco are third-rate RA to me.

  • The thing is, Wilco are on a completely different approach. I don't know why you would even compare the two. I don't think Wilco really have a genre. Ryan would definitely be more singer/songwriter in his approach, but Wilco are far too experimental to be compared to Ryan with any degree of relevancy to the argument.

  • Edhallick's witty comment from his mom's basement.

  • haha, hope this is a joke.

  • fyi .... he is ryan adams, not bryan...

  • Man, this guy sings with such sincerity. It's almost like this song is autobiographical.

  • im seeing him tomorrow!...and wheres the harmonica?!?!

  • wheres the harmonica? that really makes the song better and this version is missing this

  • When was this performance?

  • He's special.... in a great way.

  • one of his best lyrics, has so much meaning to me

  • Saw them live last week, fantastic show, sadly they didn't play this one

  • every time i hear this i cry tears of joy

  • ryan is leaving music for a bit to write fiction.

Theres something magical about this man..almost spiritual..a somewhat lonely dark spirit.

  • Catchy Title,Taught Myself How To Grow Old ...If some only new the meaning,as I perceive it....Openned My eyes when no one was listening. Great Great musician

  • I see him tomorrow for the first time and if this is what I have to look forward to then I'm gonna have an amazing night. Simply beautiful, so talented.

  • expect to go home feeling like you've just heard the most beautiful music in your life. Ryan is one-of-a-kind. adore him forever.

  • They had poor sound at the venue, which was unfortunate...nevertheless, very very memorable.

  • Perfect

  • When did Andy Dick learn how to play the steel guitar? lol

  • hahaha good find!

  • mmm i want to steal him!

  • digging it. lets go skate ryan.||||

  • yea ol school!!ryans my favorite!!!cl

  • Can't wait for Jacksonville on March 10th!!!!!

  • Got tickets to see him/them in February in New Jersey! Yea!

  • i always think of ryan adams when i hear bryan adams

  • soon, you'll only be thinking of ryan adams...believe me.

  • bryan is a loser

  • bryan adams is gay though , thats the difference, ryan adams is a genius

  • You're a tool....find a different adjective.

  • wow, i'm liking ryan adams and his music

  • This song is so much better without the fuckin' harmonica

  • you have no purpose listening to Ryan Adams because you have no understanding of his music. you poor thing...

  • The problem is that he is around at a time whem marketability is more important then talent in music. I Young and Dylan were to appear today they would hardly be known. People don't give a fuck about talent anymore. 30 years ago Brittany spears would have been nothing more than an act in a Vegas.

  • Not true. 30 years ago the biggest hits were by Debbie Boone, Sean Cassidy, Leif Garret. Cher was huge. And Andy Gibb.

    Bullshit has always been popular.

  • its a shame because this is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. it is extremely personal and it makes you want to listen to it 5,000x over and find something new in it and relate it to your life each time

  • JC35086--very well said. that is exactly how this song makes one feel. you could not have said it any better!

  • Love him or hate him, he's an EXTREMELY prolific songwriter, with songs that would fall under many genres. The vast majority of his songs do not sound anything alike.

  • Maybe my judgments were premature I'll do more exploring but from the live show I've seen nothing really seemed all that "adventurous"

  • Well, you should listen all the way through all of his albums. Heartbreaker is a 60s Bob Dylan thing, Gold is supposed to resemble a 70s album, Demolition has a ton of ear pleasing rock pop songs, llor 'n kcor is a rock tribute, Love Is Hell, is mopey rock album. I can go on and on. Some songs sound similar, but Adams makes up for it and more with his lyrics.

  • man ryan is an extremely original and is probably the most talented song writer in the world right now

  • anyone who likes Ryan should check out Dillon Campbell's "Time will Heal"...

  • my god

i don t believe that i have known only now.i don t unterstand why he isn t famous .he is pure genuis.god bless you ryan.love you

  • he is famous lol, he is massive in parts of the world. He just isn't a Neil Young or Bob Dylan big.

But its better, much rather him be an almost underground artist that no one really knows, makes it more intimate when you listen to it. If you listen to say coldplay for instance, you know they are writing that for millions of people to listen to, ryan is writing his songs for his small fan base to listen to, makes is much more personal.

  • i could not agree with you more :)

  • I am so mad I missed his Boston show in september, but I will see him live one day...

  • Do they have any live versions of this song with the harmonica, like how it is on the recording on Easy Tiger?

  • The song is muuuch better without the harmonica.

  • I am going to disagree and say you are completely false and I would hope you would realize that as well.

  • This is worlds better than the studio recording. Amazing.

  • I agree. I heard the live version first though but i must say that the live version is so much better than the studio one

  • I really want to see him live. Why he never come to Japan? Any negative feeling?

  • so true, djastevie, i saw him a few weeks ago and he blew me away. if you haven't seen him live, do it.

  • Enuf said - saw u in manchester academy live - was loads good!! Tho the venue was questionable lol. Nvr forgot somethings I heard: halloweenhead first time this night - never forgot. As for this song - one of many - diamond!!

  • hadn't seen this yet. damn. his lyrics, voice, delivery are so heartbreaking. incredible.

  • I agree with all of you here, that voice just touches my heart in a way no other voice can. Hey I've got Ryan Adams right inside me! (if only...)

  • the amazing thing about ryan adams is that his live performances are even better than his amazing records

  • YESSSS!

  • Oh, my God. Still the cutest man alive. David Ryan rocks. I could listen to him sing all night long. One of the greatest voices ever....ever... -BA

  • Wow! Very, very talented imo. Class.

  • There is something so increditbly beautiful about Ryan Adams and his music..to me anyway. Everyone is entitled to their oppinion, but to me their is no better male vocalist.

  • whatever he is trying to capture here ... modern abject loneliness? i think someone said.... it's captured perfectly. it's absolutely perfect. it gets better every time i hear it. it amazes me that someone can be this good. at anything!

  • I agree!

I may be slightly biased as i always say because he is after all my favourite artist but there's a reason for that, right. His lyrics are so amazing and his songs make me feel completely happy and at ease while, on occasion, still making me want to cry. I think it's safe to say that this man is a genius.

  • This man has such an intense level of perfection in his lyrics and music, he is such an inspiration on just saying what you feel no matter how painful - thank god there is someone with so much honesty in life and music!

  • The vocal on this version is so damn good! I can't stand it! It's perfect!

  • one of his best lyrics, has so much meaning to me

  • where's the harmonica?!
