See, Kevin Smith's problem is that he's lazy. He could be a great writer and a great director, but he doesn't seem to want to put the effort in. When he's doing little riffs like this, that's demonstration of his comedic ability, and of his ability to tell a story. It's just that he can't translate it well to cinema, or that he doesn't try hard enough to make that ability translate.
The guy who asked the question was looking for serious writing advice, since he had the opportunity to ask an industry professional who has emerged successful from being a writer. But instead Smith launches into just another story, goes way off-topic, and barely ties it in with the subject of "writer's block." Maybe I'm just disappointed because I was hoping for a solid pointer or two as well.
I don't think he means to do that though. He is just a very loquacious person. I like that a lot about him too, it's nice to see a really human side and just stop and listen to what he has to say rather people always wanting their questions answered. Now, granted he does go on a tangent and shares his view on things but he did essentially answer the guy's question about writers block.
as much as I love kevin smiths stories it is impossible to ask him a question and get a straight answer or sometimes to even get an answer at all. I mean he went on for like 15 minutes that had nothing to do with that guys question
are you really comparing kevin smith to george carlin? like i'm a smith fan but isnt that comparing apples to cigarette ashes or something along those lines?
Smith is also generally a humble dude but if you asked Smith himself he'd agree (and believe it)...
True, but I mean, SOMEBODY has to be the new Carlin ya know? If you asked George I'm sure he'd be just as humble. I don't know though. For now, Carlin is still the Carlin in my world.
i hear you, and not to take anything away from smith, as i seen all his movies... even read some of his 'boring life' things (actually the blog on his website which was converted to a book) and his podcasts... commentaries, i own the 'evening with' dvd ... but i can recognize smith for what he is and carlin he isnt lol... but ofcourse i respect your opinion and am also (not a big but still) a carlin fan... ::thinks back on carlin's 'tits sounds like a cute word' joke::
much much less oney in stand up though... most stand up comedians do that in order to hopefully be discovered and go up the ladder to sitcoms, tv shows, movies, and even kevin smiths exact position... it'd literally be below him to do so, but its fine because this is almost like a version of what if kevin smith DID do stand up...
I love how Kevin Smith is so deep and collected that he just admitted he does drugs in front of his child and it had basically no weight compared to how intelligent the rest of his thought process and joke were. The whole Dora metaphor is a really great example though...and I'm glad I'm not the only one counting how many Law & Order's are on that day.
Kevin Smith sucks a big one, and so do all the people in the audience who laugh his his obscene juvenile rantings.
really sucks big time. Get the fuck'n hook!
It really gets my ass how dumb young American's are to eat up this trash at the same time our soldier's are killing innocent Iraqi and Afghani men, women, and children.
first nobody is innocent unless u just came out of the womb. and if u dont like somebody such as kevin smith dont post comments on videos about something u dont like. May i add that its people like you that shouldnt be able to have a computer if all you do is belittle a man and a country you abviously know nothing about.
yeah most of it doesn't really make logically follow, but yeah it still talks about writers block and how he overcomes it. being a writer myself, this was still (admittedly only to a point) helpful, but thoroughly entertaining. which really is what we expect from a comedian such as Kevin!
Yeah. It was like an episode from some tv show. A problem arise, a bunch of shit happens and somehow it comes back to the original problem and solves it... kind of. He basically said, if you have writer's block. Do something else that's totally different and come back to it with a fresh perspective.
This is kind of crappy... not really about writing - just a vague discourse on children's television wrapped in a poor description of the writing process... I guess drunk trumps stoned 'cause Dora has always been just an inane series based on the rather thin plotlines of an 'educational' video game to me... I think my kids are smarter than Kevin Smith for that matter.
I'm sorry, but TheUghman is right. I love most of Smiths work, but what? The guy asked about writer's block. But Ughman, this isn't educational. It's more like a show to entertain.
It's pretty obvious that he didn't care for this question...

Yeah thats probably not going to happen at a Kev Q&A. Its basically him doing his version of stand up comedy. Substance...not so much.

Both tell it how it is, relying on personal experience, and speaking what's on everyone's mind. Both are crude but pleasant blends of comedy.
