@devonriley415 its not terrible at all.....If you mean different then yes its very different, however its also incredibly talented. If you havent seen them live i would suggest you do then tell me they're "terrible".
@SNICKERFACED hmm! well I concede the possibility of your correctness. I am not going to dispute you, as I admit it could be. You may or may not know more than I do. At the time of my response I didnt think it was but now I admit that it could be.all im saying is I dont know for sure, so dont listen to me. peace.
To Indogo13passing & WazzuliOfRunetotem, the ledgendary Dennis Emmanuel Brown was considered to be arguably the greatest voice in reggae & was in fact Bob Marley's favourite singer. His fame never matched his considerable talent, alas. He covered almost all sub-genres of reggae and to many he was a great loss to the music world in general (and not just reggae). Much more than merely an excessive cocaine user, methinks.
Dennis Brown? You know, I've listened to this song a few hundred times and I honestly don't know who Dennis Brown is. The best I've been able to find is a Reggae singer named Dennis Brown who died in 1999. Can someone tell me if the info I got was right or if this song is about another Dennis Brown? Thank you :)
It's true that Mountain Goats clips seem to attract intelligent comments; I've noticed this elsewhere on the internet as well. It's funny too, because there's nasty bickering even on places - like Dinu Lipatti clips (of whom I wouldn't have heard sans the goats) - where you'd expect better.
Youtube is a great showcase for artists. I've purchased 6 Mountain Goats CDs since listening to their songs here, and will be ordering more.
It's surprising how much I like this music...Because, well...I'm pretty sure it's terrible. But I really like it.

@aaqilian yes it is. Dennis Brown died of a collapsed lung, brought on by cocaine use.

It took all the coke in town, too bring down Dennis Brown...
I had a laugh and a single tear at that line.

My favourite line in this song is "On the day Dennis Brown's habits caught up with him, school children sang in choirs."
The juxtaposition of the images is too beautiful.

@FunkySalsero I think that fact is a large part of why Darnielle wrote about him.

mountain goat videos are the best places on youtube.
Both because the music, which is awesome, and because of the comments.
Somehow, each song seems immune to the crowds of assholes that find their way in most other videos.

Well play me a song Curtis Lowe, that was just fantastic.
Not that I expected anything less from John Darnielle.
