  • can you see the oreo?

  • just a history lesson guys, this is more of doo wop than a barbershop quartet.

  • This guy is a f*** awesome artist/producer/DJ,

  • 175 people are hatin' cause their favorite, Simon Cowell manufactured, corporate Top40 autotune artist of the week, just can't sing a capella.

  • I like Mayer and his music. Unfortunately this is doo wop clip is not good. If you listen to some doo wop of the 60s and 70s, this is pretty mediocre. I still appreciate what Mayer is doing with music though.

  • @superbbeatshow AGREED! I love Mayer but not a fan of this. they are slightly out of sync. facts are facts.

  • @BaByLoV3trey6 well thats live music for you. im glad they did this. shows that live music is not dead. and yeah it was a little out of sync but at least its not autotuned or mastered out of its ass to the point where you cant even feel the soul.

  • @MrOffbeat01 thank you. who gives a shit if 4 dudes cant snap their fingers precisely on time. a street performance is always gonna be raw. ps i find it karmically ironic and reassuring that ur name is mr offbeat and ur defending someone for not rhythmically bein on time. that makes this twice as righteous, well played sir.

  • Very cool

  • Thumbs up if you have Facebook on the other tab :)

  • @Migstsukoleyts what the fuck kinda comment is that... It ain't even related to the vid or how good it is... what the... you deserve a slap and a thumbs down

  • @Migstsukoleyts U CAN READ MY FKN MIND

  • I think I broke the like button ... :/

  • Mayer has the best hand snap in the video !

  • daaamn thats my barber shop!! lol thats watsup

  • @ChickenHawkin247 shedep betch

  • @imajoshosaurus ill kick you in the NUTS!!!!

  • Did they put the white guy in between for symmetry lol

  • Four guys singing in front of a barbershop is not a barbershop quartet.

  • How do I Like this More?

  • I love that guys hair.

  • @damnnANGELA He's at the barbershop...Hey Angie, you think he got that "DO" done before they did the song? There's a link of Mayer and his band on Jimmy Kimmel...they sound pretty tough!!

  • Check out my channel for a song that combines old school doo wop with new school hip hop! It's the best new song of 2011 in my book!

  • Everyone should check this new band "Castlecomer" out.

They are like a Barbershop Quintet/ Folk Rock Band.

Type in "Castlecomer - Amazing Grace"

    It could change your life!!!!

  • lol u dummies third dude isnt even black, thats "joe ass joe", other white dude is topher mohr, hes nice with it too, peep "ruthless" by topher mohr

  • Mayer is the muh fuckin' truth...

  • THIS DUDE IS THE SHIT LOVE HIS VIBE MUSIC VOICE

  • i dig his vibe, and he seems so musical. But man, his voice? He's more on the retro tip. For voice, try Raphael Saadiq.

  • lovely voices. I do all my songs a cappelle, care to check them out?

  • @twily2here do better.

  • I love him. no homo. He is really talented.

  • AMAZIIIING

  • love this!!!! I'm kickin' over everything in the house!!! DOPE MUTHAFUNKAHS!!! DOPE!

  • so... how is this not a barber shop??

  • @louisbrains it's more of a doowop. That's when there's a lead singing the words and some background guys saying "oooh" and "do do" and the like. Barbershop quartets generally all sing words together.

  • u shud hafta giv an explanation for dislikin videos this good

  • @lilmateo91690 The're outside of a Barbershop, and there are indeed 4 of them. What more do you em to do, shave your balls?

  • Nice! Thanks!

  • muito Bom... muito mesmo..

  • nice attempt guys, but this is not barbershop

  • @lilmateo91690 you're a barbershop faggot

  • @ChrisAnjelo

    you're a post office

  • @lilmateo91690 ooooooohhhhh

  • nice attempt guys, but this is not barbershop.

  • gosh so beast all he needs is andy bernard in that quarttet

  • most real barbershop quartets aren't this good or they sing crap songs.

  • @FKRAPCITY so be happy that this is actuallly GOOD

  • Brilliant!

  • NIIICE!!!!!

  • singers vs. the wrappers

  • More doo-wop than barbershop quartet. Still good, but it's a lead singer with three backups, rather than four singers working together.

  • YESSSSS.

  • Haha, they're barber shop singers so they stand in front of a barber shop! How awesome! haha XD

  • 166 losers who don't like this

  • @newchips Yup, simple as that.

  • this sounds so fucking amazing this is some baby makin music haha

  • Awesome job fellas

  • Damn.. I wish i had money to bring him to Brooklyn to perform.. This cat is truly truly awesome.. Damn.. That's all they got...lol I love this clip.

  • i mean yeah not everyone's going to love all the same music... but gahd please give credit where it's due and listen to these ON POINT harmonies, and bringing back that old motown soul.

  • this is what you call fun. Soul Barbershop bitch.. what do you wanna see 5 pasty white guys with potbellys and fag top hats singing 'goodbye my baby' pssssh

  • @twily2here You're a 24 year old Narutard so your opinion is really valid...

  • ITS FKN BORING YUK!

  • hey SammyyLemon you sound stupid Mayer Hawthorne's music is the shit i just saw him play and his voice is great

  • Am I just crazy or is Hawthorne wearing glasses without frames? It's been bothering me and I can't figure it out.

  • @rohnjeadling28 lol he has frames just no lenses

  • As much as I love Hawthorne and his music, this particular piece... kinda sucks, man. The ensemble overpowers the melody, and the ensemble is really outta sync. And when you listen to his voice in general, he sounds like any ol' chap singing. I know this cat has love for the music, he has good tatse, he has this, he has that, but understand where I'm coming from: The voices weren't all that.

  • @SammyyLemon Yeah, he's not the best of singers but why let anyone else perform your shit when you're writing it, composing it, producing it?

  • This is great!

  • Amazing

  • dont hate cause the dj stepped out the booth

  • This works because everything else released since Whitney Houston is OVER-PRO-DUCED.

  • corny assssss ending

  • 165 people thought "barbershop" was a place to get their hair cut

  • Comment removed

  • @killakemm no,156 people, including myself, know that this isn't "barbershop", if anything it's just "acappella"

  • @killakemm

actually 167 people know that this is not barbershop

  • the best thing about mayer hawthorne is his voice, he doesn't need computers to make him sound better like t-pain

  • it should say a capella

  • @!stNightingale that's because he's not really a singer. he even admits it when he's interviewed. he's a producer, DJ, and musician but said he never really planned on being a singer

  • this is not barbershop.

  • So where's the barbershop quartet?

  • te sumulation and tone! plus meledy all comes from mayer Hawthorne!!! hes the best man!!!!!

  • Naw dude is that RZA on da left!!! hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • Love it!!! Alot of us just stop dancing, til this guy came along!!! My favorite of his is I wish it would rain! Got somethin new to old school dace to again!

  • I love barbershop and the video is very well shot but the lead singer really isn't that good.

  • This is what I am motherfucking talking about. Bring the old shit back when they actually put effort into music, when they thought alike, worked alike, felt alike.

This is real music: Well, the original Doo-wop at that, but including this.

  • totally agree with u brother these guys are the real deal close your eyes and you think your listening to an old motown group so soulful

  • @helgenx um - it is back - hence it's presence on youtube. there has always been good music and bad music, in every time, in every era.

  • Great Stuff!

This is certainly doo-wap! But not even a smidgen of barbershop. Barbershop not only must include 30 percent dominant 7th chords, but all 4 singers must be singing the same words in sync(most of the time) and not backing a soloist with oos and ahs.The barbershop style is highly defined and can be studied more via the Barbershop Harmony Society's web site. Do a search.

    JW,

Baritone, Flower City Express(quartet) and InnerLoop (contemporary a cappella)

  • i have fallen in love with mayer h. over night he is truley an amazing artist!!!!! he is just too awesome

  • Amazing <3

  • this is not barber shop...

  • @moronthannot please tell us what is

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Original Barbershop is basically Mills Brothers—30s (even though it's not always acapela).

    youtube (dot) com/watch?v=W9pr3kTutbs&feature=related

at about 1:20 in that video.

    Which sounds more like this:

    youtube (dot) com/watch?v=JKUcfYC7Qmg

The harmonies are what makes it barbershop. (look up "barbershop" on wiki) This Mayer video is more like Doo-wop (40's) which was a different style altogether because of the type of harmonies that are used

  • @moronthannot please explain the two different types of harmonies utilized by barbershop vs. doo-wop and what makes them different

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Well, if you notice when listening to the Mills Brothers, the chords there have a slight dissonance that makes it "ring". Also, the chord progressions are different between the two styles. Doo-wop also usually has a main singer, while the rest of the group "ooh's and aah's" and interjects periodically. Barbershop is usually made full by each part singing the words all together...compare the two videos I linked with this one. U can tell the difference

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement PS 500 characters is not enough to explain the types of harmonies. There's just too much to say. Peep the videos I linked and check out the two styles on wikipedia. You'll get a better understanding there than in a youtube comment.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Yeah. I know nothing about harmonies. I just have a B.A. in Music. I have spent 15 years of my life playing and studying music. You obviously don't know anything about harmonies if you can't even tell the difference between the original barbershoppers' harmonies and this video's JUST BY LISTENING. Do you know what a dominant 7th chord is? Did you know that this video's piece contains almost none? Could you tell that it was mostly major and minor triads? Didn't think so. ;)

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement If the song starts on an e minor chord, with the bass singing the root, that would put the song in the key of c major (or the relative minor, e). They spend a lot of time on cadences on g major, which implies the composer most likely was writing from a c major standpoint. They employ a iii(minor), IV(major), and V(major) repeated chord progression using all triads. Should I go on? If you don't understand that, 500 characters is not enough to teach you. Feel like a dick now?

  • @moronthannot so does every barbershop song do that? and that's why this is not barbershop?

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Not what I described above. That was what was going on in this song. No 7th chords at all. Barbershop ALWAYS has that 7th chord harmony. That is what makes it barbershop. This song has little to no barbershop techniques...except, like I and many others have said, them standing in front of a barbershop.

  • @moronthannot 7th chords. Wow. Thanks for teaching me about music moronthannot.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Really? You're that offended that you have to be a dick? I didn't say the song was bad, I just said it was improperly named. If it doesn't matter to call it what it is or to understand what the differences of musical styles are and their influence on culture and society, then you must believe that music educators and musicians with degrees are wasting their time. What's the big deal if they are corrected, if they are incorrect? Why are you so butthurt about it?

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement And you say "Thanks for teaching me about music" and I, again, tell you to go on wikipedia or do some research on your own because I cannot teach you about music in 500 characters on a youtube comment. I am the one who told you that if you don't learn anything here, you will not learn anything at all unless you do some research on your own. Be a REAL student, and not just keep letting teachers spoon-feed you information. LEARN SOMETHING TODAY.

  • @moronthannot Thanks teach, now that you've taught me about 7th chords I can finally understand what barbershop truly is.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Good grief, you're an ignorant fool...Stop trying to be so tough and maybe try to be open to the fact that just because someone is famous or good at music it doesn't mean that they are incapable of being wrong. You OBVIOUSLY have no idea what barbershop truly is, otherwise you wouldn't be arguing with me. Grow up and learn something.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement PS Take a look at @iloopbari's comment. I expect you to jump on his case as well, because he seems to be saying the same things I'm saying. Maybe there's something to our "pointless" mention of the ever so important dominant 7th chord. Ha! I can't wait to see how you respond....most likely something childish like your last responses...

  • @moronthannot I noticed you favorited a video of an old Jew supporting the 'human shield' excuse in Isreal. I suggest you go to top documentary films and learn about what's really going on over there.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Wrong forum for this, man. We're talking about barbershop. If you wanna talk Israel and Palestine, message me. Besides. You have no idea what I believe (or know for that matter) about what's going on over there just by a video I favorited. Maybe instead of assuming things, you should ask me, but not where we're talking about barbershop!

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement And, of course, by "TOP" documentaries you would be referring to the ones that support your views, right? I have learned in life to try to be more objective than my personal viewpoints. Just like this video. I totally love Mayer Hawthorn and totally dig the song they sang, but an objective view shows us that it just simply isn't always as the video is labeled.

  • @moronthannot no I mean the website top documentary films. What better to help you form objective viewpoints of a place than raw footage from there. If you believe the human shield thing you truly are a moron.

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement Do you read ANYTHING anyone posts, or do you just have super bad tunnel vision? IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS, PERSONAL MESSAGE ME. THIS IS NOT THE PROPER FORUM TO DISCUSS THIS TOPIC! And assuming I "believe" in anything without ASKING ME is more of a truly moronic action than ANYONE believing in ANYTHING.

  • @moronthannot calm down there all caps

  • @UrbanCrunkMovement It was mostly a "tongue-in-cheek" statement cuz they're calling it barbershop and they're standing in front of a barber shop...singing something akin to doo-wop. I think that most barbershop thing in this video is the actual shop behind them. Not that they suck or they are ignorant or anything negative. Just that it's not quite accurate.

  • There's something magical in a good harmony :)

  • I am head over heels in love with Mayer Hawthorne!! He's so dreamy <3

A Strange Arrangement is the best album I have heard in the last 5 or 6 years. Much Success and Respect!!

  • @ebonyj82 wait a minute I am head over heels in love with him! Saw him live this past weekend. It was amazing. I can't his music or him out of my mind.

  • @greenthum66 yeah I am straight but I am head over heels in love whith him too...

  • lets see you try singing like that so shut up your the outside of the oreo!

  • whats the name of this song

  • @worldfistpumpchamp mayer hawthorne (the guy in the front) - when i said goodbye

  • @worldfistpumpchamp btw read the description before asking stuff ;)

  • @popizm done ;)

  • @popizm and i can't find it anywhere else:(

  • you would think since they are all standing in front of a barbershop..they could have gotten haircuts!!!

  • old school! i love it

  • I love this! You are awesome. The sixties sound is slowly making a comeback.

  • its about time someone could really sing and use there true talent

  • the white guy on the immediate left missed the snap...oh snap he didn't mean it!

  • Mayer Hawthorne makes great soul music. His album is unreal but he isn't the greatest live singer.I've seen him live here in Detroit and I must say I wasn't too impressed with his singing live. But nevertheless he makes great music and creates a good vibe that most singers/artists are lacking now a days.Keep it up Mayer.

  • This reminds me of the time I was in a barbershop quartet in Skokie, Illinois...

  • @CitySkin09 he will flip you, flip you for real

  • Sorry to say but this is not barbershop

  • @bbstenor419 yes it is, there are 4 guys, singing, in front of a barbershop, i dont know about you, but that seems like a barbershop quartet to me, and last time a checked quartet means 4 singers, look it up if you dont believe me

  • @xGreenHouseVidiosx just because they are in front of a barbershop doesn't make it a barbershop quartet you moron. Barbershop is a style of music not a certain location where music is performed. So next time get your facts straight before you go spewing your ignorance on subjects you thibk you have knowledge in.

  • @bbstenor419 ...so y dont u explain to us what IS barbershop

  • iLove this dude

  • haha dude on the left looks JUST like rza.

  • @stefdelev LOL!

  • @stefdelev Are you extremely blind?

  • he's a freaking genius

  • omg MAYERHAWTHORNE is amazing! i love him!

  • Ouais ,ouais, pas mal l' Acapela mais un peu plat, c'est pas parce que il n'y a pas d'instrument qu'il faut que ça manque de dynamisme.

  • love these cats...

  • so nice :)

  • Fucking great!

  • I don't want to be a nitpicker, but this isn't barbershop music. It sounds nice, they're four singers who are harmonizing a capella and it is sung in front of a barbershop, but that doesn't make it barbershop :D

  • whats the difference between a cappela and barbershop? just curious.

  • @cdphatty well barbershop is just one style of a capella singing. a capella simply means no instruments. Barbershop is a specific style of four-part close harmony. Other forms of a capella singing include doo wop and groups may feature beatbox or percussion, as in Rockapella, and could include any number of performers; there are always four in barbershop, and although there is a lead singer he sings along with the other parts rather than separately in a solo.
