Lena's reference at 1:05 is about aggressive comedian Phil Silvers, an old pal of Judy's, who would "teach" someone to sing, like Sinatra, and grab his mouth to demonstrate how to enunciate properly. Well... that was funny then. Lena was older than Judy here. Looking at them, especially in close-up, it's hardly surprising that Judy made it to 47, Lena past 90. Both were national treasures, but 2 more different ladies couldn't exist. Horne had problems, was emotional, but 100% professional.
Judy might not have shown up for rehearsals during her series but she was amazing when it was air time. She had a photgraphic memory. Judy only needed to be shown something once or twice. Sid Luft said that she only read the script for A Star is Born once & never picked it up again. It's natural that when you have that kind of gift, it becomes second nature to us & we forget that not everyone has the ability to memorize so precise. Judy needed little direction & her work speaks for itself.
It was great to see Lena warm up to Judy by this time into this episode. The beginning you can see Lena wasn't too warm to Judy when they did the opening number and Judy tried very hard for Lena to open up and Judy was always a great hostess. Judy was a very giving performer, never afraid of sharing and shining the spotlight to her guests, especially female guests. Judy was very comfortable and never felt threatened by anyone she shared the stage with..
@NFitalianGuy Lena was extremely pissed- off at Judy's unprofessionalism (showing up unprepared or not at all), I don't blame her for not being 'warm' during most of the show.
@NYCguys2007 Lena was a great performer but she was @ Mgm & any one who worked with Judy knew that there were times Judy didnt show up or rehearse. Why These stars who got mad is beyond me. Also it was Judy's show and they got paid. Judy had a photographic memory & i'm guessing she never thought about what it must have been like for others who did NOT have a photgraphic memory. She worked the only way her mind was used to. So why everyone complained is beyond me when they all knew what to expect.
@NFitalianGuy EXCUSES EXCUSES. Everyone regardless of being paid or not, regardless of where or what job they work, expects professional co-workers. Lena was not the only one who was poorly treated on this show.
@NYCguys2007 If anyone who has read my comments about Judy Garland knows I never make excuses for her. I'm the first to admit Judy was not perfect & she was a person with flaws. I'm just stating I can understand lena's feelings. While Judy was alive and at MGM & after MGM when her problems started to surface, Everyone who worked with her & knew her that when you work with Judy, you had to deal withthe fact that these things might happen & if you didnt want to put up with it, decline the job.
@NYCguys2007 I am not here to argue, I post my comments & answer those who reply to mine & try to see both sides. I'm sure Lena had every right to feel the way she did. But whatever happened behind the scene that made her upset showed in her performance. She barely looked at Judy which was very noticeable. A true professional hides their true feelings while on the air. Fans can sense stuff. I Love Lucy's Viv Vance & William Frawley hated each other but no one could tell when on the air.
@NFitalianGuy Note that Lena rarely looked at ANYONE. She did keep her issues with Judy out of the performance and just did it as usual. The only one she was ever more personable with was Dean Martin.
Two legends at their best!

Kinda sad that Lena Horne was 46 in this video and Judy was only 41 and Judy looked so much older. Sigh.

They remind me of girls at a sleepover. Sort of like me and my friends when we get together and act silly. Love this clip.

Poor Judy has to keep scratching the itch on her facial areas due to itchiness caused by uppers.
