MACEO PARKER, dude. Born 14th February 1943. He was the James Brown saxophone sound of Funk and soul jazz. MACEO also played with the Parliament-Funkadelic's
You are Welcome LauraAmiga, James Brown's music and MACEO's sax playing style was me when I was playing my sax with Mickey and the Soul Generation. No AC and my bedroom window was wide open every night and day.
1964 I'm in my bed on Ferris St. San Antonio, Texas. We did'nt have AC so I'm in a 2 bed- room house my sister was in the other bedroom so my bedroom was the the living-room. Every night from a Drive-Inn called the Jolly Time. I would hear this song PAPA"s GOT A BRAND NEW BAG day in day out.. Everytime I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes. It was me, DAMN MACEO was my style of playing. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Mickey and The Soul Generation.
Dudes moves are ridiculous. My man got no ankles. How he had these moves way back when amazes me. Everything from James doing his thing and the beat is top notch.
Great, great, great. I love the girls screaming. Also check out: "Otis Redding, Papa's got a brand new bag, live." Ther best runner up to this cut I have ever heard.
Ah, the real deal. I saw this Shindig show while my ma shook her head and wondered what the world was coming to. I want to throw down and say the JB is the most important figure in the last 50 years of pop music. And I bet others would agree--what a monster!!
I Love me some James Brown but I never understood why they called him the God father of soul when A: The Genius Ray charles came before him, and B: He was best known for creating Funk. Go figure
@tyleryesta1 - Ray Charles may have come before him but Ray Charles abandoned soul; early on for country and pop stuff. James Brown stuck with soul his entire career, only making a couple of albums in a different vein, but he always went back to it. James Brown actually created funk almost singlehandedly, and yes I have wondered why he wasn't called the godfather of funk, but he also was universally known as soul brother #1.
I watched James Brown come to the Morris Civic auditorium every year for about 5 years during the 60's. ALWAYS a full performance, never a disappointment. One area of memory that is always happy and glad i was able to live it.

Saw this video when it aired back in the 60's as a young teenager. Lots of great rock back then - but this stuff was the cutting edge. James Brown was dangerous, and our parents knew it. One can't imagine the impact this man had. He was re-inventing music and dance. Whew
hard to top the minister of the funk. appreciate your memories too LA. i'm 37 and i can truly say, without sounding political or anything, the moving fast part is still the same. but with the internet now, there is no longer everyone coming to the table to enjoy the same music, and so we've fragmented so much. thanks for the memories though.

you youngens think of clothing lines like you invented them.when james slides his hand down his legs and says his line is pretty clean. hes talking about his clothing line.back in the day if you were dressed up we would say damn hes clean!
Saw James in Bluefield, Va back in college in 1966.
After a dozen acts, most yelling "stand up and clap your hands," the house lights dimmed, the drummer started playing and James danced across the stage on one foot and grabbed the mike with his head down and waited for the applause to get louder and it bever stopped.
He yelled to his conductor, " Mazio, hit me" and went into a nasty version of "I feel good."
James played for 2 hrs and I'll never forget that concert.

@CecilBDiMa Some people love to use the negative word "stole" he was inspired and added to what James Brown did .Each genration learns from the previous generation. R.I.P. God Father of Soul and King of Pop, two of the greatest of all time!
HOLY .........James Brown could dance?! Thats even 10x more slick than Michael Jackson and thats impossible. I'm 27 years old and male but this made me scream like those girls in the video.

(We can be watching a video on how airplanes are made and then you'll see a comment that says "Hopefully one of those planes are for Justin Bieber and its blows up") some bullshit like that.
@RussellTyroneJones I think imitated is a better word. He couldnt help it if he wanted to be like the great one. And i dont see a problem with it since MJ explained over and over again that Mr. Brown was his chief influence.

If I could create a Brown album for todays kids, It will include Black and Proud, Don't be a drop out, King Haroin, Oh baby don't you weep, I don't want no body to give me nothing, open up the door and I will get it my self, Living in America, Nature Boy, Papa didn't take no mess, Sweet little baby boy, and lets make this Christmas mean something this year. These are to songs that change my life.
There are millions of deep comments about James brown that will never be told. Some good and some happy and some will have you crying. The album Appallo theater # one was played in New York on radio as if it was a 45 and stayed on the charts black charts for 66 weeks. I still have mine. Thank God for the internet, because I looked for his Oh baby don't you weep for song for over 30 years. There are some early, incredable Jazz albums out there somewhere that is unbelievable James Brown.
Your wellcome LauraAmiga. Most young people today just can imagine what an amazing thing it was to see a black person on TV in the early sixties. It just didn't happen much. Things were getting better by 1965. But to see James Brown was truly and amazing thing. We would watch him on TV and talk about the show at school for days. America was a really different place in those days. It doesn't mean that you didn't create and have fun. It just means that you really didn't feel apart of society.
I saw him live in Sacramento a number of time. His show was mostly on december 31 in Sacramento Calif. I play that some while riding my harley as loud as I can. Because that song changed every thing for James. FUNK was born and James got funkier from then on until the day he died. You never new what he would say or do and he had the power and the gut to do it and never look back. I live well today because I took his messages to heart in the 1960's. RIP James, I owe you.
They play this at my son wedding a couple years ago. I had the first dance with my daughter inlaw. I could believe all the jumping up and rushing to the floor to dance to that song. They stole my moment. People were doing dances that I haven't seen sence 1962. It was all about James Brown that night. It's amazing how James Brown can't still a show even from the grave. In the 1960's James made me go back to school with don't be a drop out. Today I'm retired and still dancing to his music.
Things were moving so fast in those days. Music chaned every six months and so did the politics at nthe time. You never new who was on top today and who would be alive tomarrow. It was buitiful and so awfully ugly at the same time. Music went in all kinds of directions and so did society. We were laughing, crying, dancing , waring, and progressng at the same time. I was a revolution all over the planet throughout the 1960's and suddenly it was over at Altamont. Just like that it was over.
@fiddletownkid Altamont, man...i listen to a lot of grateful dead concerts. And you hear a fundamental shift occur in the grateful dead's sound after the altamont incident. It got dark for a moment. Scary. I mean the Dead could always get scary in 68-69. But after Altamont. They had some dark, weird, intensely trippy shows. If u care to, give a listen to the Dark Star from 12/30/69. Shit will put hair on your arms just so it can stand all the way up
The 38 people who disliked this song must really love Polka music, and the Lawrence Welk Show. Get lost, because you apparently have no music taste whatsoever.
@wchoco84 When he was a kid he once played a football game, with a cast on his leg, and he still scored a touch down. That should give you an idea of how tough this man was. You should check out Dr Cornel West lecture on the genius of James Brown. Its up on youtube. It will give you a deeper insight into what drove him to push himself to the outer limits.
This isn't James at his best. I want you to understand that. This is what was left of him after all those years traveling the so-called, dreaded 'Chitlin' circuit'. The deep south, with all of its predjudices denying him and his entourage a good nights sleep in a comfortable hotel bed; a hot meal at a clean dining facility; all of the maltreatment the south could muster up. And the entourage is on the road every single day of the year. He couldn't even stay in New York hotels in the beginning.
@lamontlewis I agree. Its the same story with Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest pound for pound boxer of the 20th century. And its the same with Jackie Wilson. Unfortunately the greatest moments were not captured and preserved for posterity.
His feet are possessed!!! He's amazing... James Brown was phenomenal, Michael Jackson was phenomenal. Disrespecting MJ doesn't further validate your opinion of James. You just look juvenile. They loved each other and knew each other. No need to hate someone you never personally knew. Grow up folks! RIP James Brown and MJ!!
Michael Jackson said that James Brown was his single greatest inspiration. James Brown said that Michael Jackson was the greatest singer of the 80s. Can we all please shut the fuck up about who was better?

It was buitiful and so awfully ugly at the same time. Music went in all kinds of directions and so did society. We were laughing, crying, dancing , waring, and progressng at the same time. I was a revolution all over the planet throughout the 1960's and suddenly it was over at Altamont. Just like that it was over.

@fiddletownkid I appreciate very much your comments. People can discover how music is so related to life.

It will give you a deeper insight into what drove him to push himself to the outer limits.

salma7777777 7 months ago
