Maybe it's gets better, but the man's a pundit so I doubt it. Rule one of writing thrillers is that you are supposed to draw the reader in, but in that entire prologue or first chapter Klavan didn't say one single thrilling thing to keep me interested. That most certainly is not the mark of a good writer.
I'm reading this book right now. I watched "True Crime" and "Don't Say A Word", but this is the first Klavan book I read. The reviewer failed to mention that liberals might like it less than conservatives, due to the political bent of even some of the throw-away lines.
Though I would hope that even liberals would read and like it, just as I hope conservatives would love great art told from a liberal perspective.
@TomerMMHA It's not so much a political bent so much as a political U-turn. I read Koontz novels and he's said to have kind of a conservative bias, but Klavan is just ridiculous. Instead of piquing the person's curiosity through the prologue and chapter 1 he throws out one talking point after another. First the "liberal media", then the "liberal gov't soft on criminals hard on business", and lastly "the feminist has no husband or happy life while her pregnant college dropout sister does".
@Savior20061 He is just an arsehole from Long Island, who after washing up as a Hollywood screenwriter, goes all out Right so he can play the poor abused Jewish convert to Evangelical Christianity & Conservatism & reboot his career as some sort of savant of the right. Which is a smart move because he leverages all his media buddies and talk shows as the token Hollywood con to plug his otherwise turgid pulp, that would never sell on its own merits.
@DawnOfTheDead991 LMAO.. he must be significant. You wasted your time insulting and criticizing him. Oh well he only represents 85% of the American population, so maybe that is the real reason you don't like him. Or is it because he is funny, intelligent, logical and represents the real American and not your liberal, atheist, self deprecating view on our country?
@TomerMMHA I dunno, I saw both of those movies and to be honest, could barely remember either of them since they were both so dull. Since I didn't know or care who wrote them, it has nothing to do with any other issues.
As a Klavan fan who has read the book, I can vouch for the fairness and accuracy of this review--even if, in the end, it is mainly a clever way to plug the reviewer's own work. :)
