@sunjacker9000 i have a question about the walnut bedding ?i have a baby gecko on it and it's having trouble pooing is that the problem?i gave her a warm bath to help her and it helped out some please send me a message back. thanks,
my geckos are just fine with sand and im pretty sure that when a gecko would swallow walnut the walnut would expand and increase the chance of impaction
guess what people shut the hell up about the sand, how do you think these lizards survived in the desert in the first place?!?! exacly who cares its just sand. All this compaction shit probably some troll thought of of a overeaction to what happend to his beardie. Yes I do believe in compaction but no just sand. It could happen with ANYTHING. so just shut the fuck up
Everyone gets so overwhelmed about sand. When there adults there's nooooo problem!! I bet all of u just go to a video with people using sand and u write in the comments,"sand causes impaction!!! These people r dumbasses." U people annoy me so much!!! And I have 4 geckos and they've been on sand (calci sand, play sand, Exo terra sand, reptisand, etc.) their entire lives!! They've been on sand in the pet stores when I got them. And they r so healthy. Trust me I a
Also I heard for geckos it is okay and even recommended to "overcrowd" their homes with decorations, in nature they usually burrow and hide all day, they only go up to the surface and run around in the sand after weather conditions permit or if there's ALOT of humidity...
Don't use sand for these little guys, you'll hurt them and it would be a shame :( Poor little geckos
I hate how so many people use their pets as decorations rather than living animals. crushed walnut and sand are VERY dangerous, but "they dont look as nice" as the SAFE bet of paper towels or reptile carpeting
@BrightEyes10003 sand is okay, just put clay with it. What if you have a animal that burrows? You can't use repticarpet or paper towels for that, plus they can't get as warm.
@StealthyLeopards if you dont want impaction than you use reptile carpet if you have young gecko, but for adult is good NATURE SAND , and this can cause impaction , if its nature, and if you use one from shop, orange or black, this is not nature, than you need feed your leopard gecko from pincette :)

crushed walnut isnt bad.bad hubstraty causes impaction if you have good caluim levels he wont eat the walnuts.i have 5 leopard geckos and one is 7 and lived on it all her live she is still 65 grams in weight.all over the internet tyhey says it bad but its really not.all my leopard geckos are fed in bowls.do the people that say its bad have prove. no!just have good hubstraty and they will be fine.im prove my leo is 7 and is on it.i just made this account so you people would know.gosh
Someone educate me...WHY in the world is he using that as substrate? Hope thats not for a young reptile...anyhow....educate me before I call this STUPID
i love how stupid people are. they read what they see and without question the belive it.
the crushed walnut is said to be toxic to animals. first of the crushed walnuts (like in this video) are treated to remove the toxisity in the walnuts, now...the toxin is only bad to animals that will absorb the toxins...like fish. if they eat it its potentioaly bad but no realy, they would have to eat ALLOT. thoes who say crushed walnut killed ur animal... ur are dumb, their are other causes.
@MrSnowpea99 its a bit large for them, sand works perfect...just feed ur leopard gecko crickets OUTSIDE of his tank and you will never have to wory about imaction. or feed it worms inside a feeding bowl. its a simple mistake that everyone makes, and because of ignorance...people open ther dumbass mouths and bitch about imaction....
okay i want the tank to look like desert but idont want my beardie to like die so ive heard calci sand is edible but i heard sum1 say in another vid it sux so u tell me, walnut stuff or is calcisand ok?
i never like reptile carpet but i gess it will do is there anything else beside R.C and news paper what about clay substrate and i know it not good for babies but the adults ya
well you can use p.c .paper , but you can still use news paper just put a napkins under the water bowl . cause if you wet the news paper the ink can get wet the animal can drink from damp news paper and thats really bad ...;( or else you can go to a hard ware store or crafted shop and ask for china paper which is really thin and cheap and good!!!!!!
well that will be grate just feed him or her or it just feed it in another container so it wont eat the coco husk ... ........what type of animal do you have/
Any loose substrate can be dangerous. I've heard some cases of crushed walnut being okay but I'd rather be on the safe side and use reptile carpet. I know some people though who have built a higher level and put food and what not up there so their leopard gecko wont eat the substrate on accident.
yeah but Leopard Geckos come from the Middle East bra...... where therre is nothing but sand so this is closer to their accual habitat than inked newspaper, carpet or papertowel.
well the leo lizard doesint use sand i fink he use reptile carpet but the beared dragon he need sand .. lol my beared dragon is so big and fat and he was born on sand

just use sand some peaple fink that sand is not good for them well they are idiot they live in desert so why you dont wanna use sand .... exacly evrwone trying to be scientist lol some peaple allways blame the sand for no reason and thats where they live
yea, this vid is no good. its obviously a short clip of a larger video.
all they mention is substrate really, and their pushing the worst possible particle substrate there is.
what is it with all these big companies? why cant they do proper research before putting these dangerous things on the shelf.
to a previous poster: if your petstore stopped carrying it thats because they had a conscience. i worked for a guy who wouldnt pull it no matter what proof i showed him it was dangerous.
So they do fine with carpet then eh? im only asking case my lizard died on easter weekend, and i want to make sure that the next Leo i get has a perfect set up, thanks btw
2 things wrong in this vid. Walnut shells are bad for any animal. Sand should only be used with adult reptiles. And secondly, that cage is far too high for a ground dwelling leopard gecko to provide enough air circulation.
no their not particularly social animals lol they'd much rather live alone. Also dont put them in groups they'll sometimes fight there teritorial even the females are a little.
I used the crushed walnut shells once in my bearded dragon's cage and these small red bugs kept appearing in the cage so obviously, I took it out, only to find that the entire bag was infested! It was disgusting and I will never use it again!
well crushed walnut is in any way is a bad substrate for any reptile. Use sand. Sand is a perfect heat conducter and is attractive. Downside is that ur gecko or beardie migt get impaction. One do not use sand w/ babies since they are not great hunters yet and might eat a lot of sand by accident. Mines are babies and when they get thier crickets they sometimes miss and get the repti carpet. When they are 6in then use sand since they might be good hunters by then or better ttake them out and feed
they do need uvb there is even proof of this in humans. people on the poles have buildings with uvb and full spectrum lighting in which they read and chill in for a couple of hours or they get sick look it up
I own over 25 geckos, from leopards, African fat tails to even Madagascar giant day geckos. None are on sand, calci sand etc. Mine are on paper towel and or tile from the hardware store. Tile is easy to clean and no impaction. My beardie and tegus are on tile as well. These guys just want you to buy their stuff. There is no moist hides and they don't need UVB lighting.
nah crushed walnut is badfor anything young. i dont know about full grown reptiles, but if you have a baby or juevinile its bad. one of my beardies got a gut impaction from it. but i will say it is a good heat conductor. its just theres too much of a chance of them digesting too much of it and internaly they cant break it down.
omg these guys call them selfs experts a freaking retarded 1st grader would no not to put crushed walnut in a leopard geckos cage it'll give them impaction
My friend and 2 reptile shops i go to use sand.... my beardie is on sand and so is my friends leopard gecko. with over 20 years experience joint with that fact i think its stupid to keep animals on newspaper... i mean wtf! Im going to recommend sand. and for baby's use a wet sand and compact it to get them used to sand without any risk of them swallowing any small grains. :)
Walnut sits in the digestive track, and cannot be digested, so will cause impaction, and it's hard on their stomachs, I tent to find it binds. If you really want a loose subtrate use, fine sifted washed playsand!
dont use any loose substrates use newspapers paper towels repticarpet but thats just my opinion cause it can cause impaction on your lizard and they can die please dont put this as a bad comment because i'm just stating my opinion thats all
Calci sand is made from calcium carbonate (natural cement). If you use it, your reptiles will not live long, it will collect in their intestines and kill them. Calci-sand has been respinsable for 1000's of death's or desert reptiles.

nah crushed walnut is badfor anything young. i dont know about full grown reptiles, but if you have a baby or juevinile its bad. one of my beardies got a gut impaction from it. but i will say it is a good heat conductor. its just theres too much of a chance of them digesting too much of it and internaly they cant break it down.

yoda8009 3 years ago 2
My friend and 2 reptile shops i go to use sand.... my beardie is on sand and so is my friends leopard gecko. with over 20 years experience joint with that fact i think its stupid to keep animals on newspaper... i mean wtf! Im going to recommend sand. and for baby's use a wet sand and compact it to get them used to sand without any risk of them swallowing any small grains. :)

Crushed walnut is the worst, dont use it ppl please, use playsand or tile!!!!! PLEASE DONT USE CALCI SAND OR CRUSHED WALNUT.
gtbarber 3 years ago
why is walnut bad? ive had my gecko on it for about.... 5 months now with no impaction.
yikem 3 years ago
Walnut sits in the digestive track, and cannot be digested, so will cause impaction, and it's hard on their stomachs, I tent to find it binds. If you really want a loose subtrate use, fine sifted washed playsand!
gtbarber 3 years ago
dont use any loose substrates use newspapers paper towels repticarpet but thats just my opinion cause it can cause impaction on your lizard and they can die please dont put this as a bad comment because i'm just stating my opinion thats all

u need to use calcium sand
camhaystax 4 years ago
calci sand isnt good.
j5ive504 3 years ago
Calci sand is made from calcium carbonate (natural cement). If you use it, your reptiles will not live long, it will collect in their intestines and kill them. Calci-sand has been respinsable for 1000's of death's or desert reptiles.
