I haven't watched this DVD in almost 15 years yet I find myself watching this and saying to myself what a poseur I am. I listen to recordings I've done with several different bands and just when I think I'm all Danny Carey and Neil Peart, I watched this and reminded myself who my #1 influence REALLY is. Dang.
@JonP1961 I agree!Does any one know if simon writes his own music?Does he write out the parts for all of the instruments?Love the suspended chords he uses here and in other pieces.
When I was first taught to play drums... back in the day, my teachers were stuck on the "heel down" method on the bass drum. I always thought that was bogus, because I just didn't have the same amount of control. Turns out nearly EVERY drummer I admire, Phillips, Weckls, Peart, etc., plays "heel up". Watching these YouTube videos has reinforced that!
@utahdrumtech Yes....it's a preference thing...but when you play quiet it's more logical to play heel down....but if you need power heel up is a must
drummers like JoJo Mayer even plays heel down when he needs to....and Simon even explains in the video if he needs to play dynamically he plays heel down and up...especially in the warm ups he displays on the video
both are awesome drummers....very tight drummers and good groove........just that they have their own style...all drummers have to have their own style...so stop all, this shit...
I don´t like to "rate" drummers or any other musician. I am a huge Porcaro fan, as a Phillips fan. But at this time i like Simon the most. I´ve seen him live, right in front of the drumset, and he is just amazing. Incredibly tight , smooth and pecise. Just amazing.
he is a very hard working person thats for sure no doubts about it. I mean for him to develope himself that much and this video is from like 1990 or something so go figure.
Jeff was a fine drummer, but i fail to see what he has to do with a Simon Phillips video, stop all this silly "who's the better drummer shit" they are both great drummers, it's not a question of who's the best, besides this is not a TOTO thing, it's Simon solo.....Get it ?
Wow, good thought. Holdsworth's best playing was with Tony Williams, the greatest drummer on Earth until his death. Simon is arguably the heir to the throne now. Great player.
the one I like the most is VInnie Colaiuta that's as far as my taste goes. I like Simon second. actually all the drummers at THIS level are very skilled all of them have something different to offer to the world of music and they are all my sensei. They're above beyond comparison they are just very unique, there is no better is just a matter of who you like better. as for tony williams there's no double for him. Just saying
Simon is the best drummer in the world, i have seen he in a clinic, he is very very amazing and funny, I have learned much from he... excellent dynamics coordination and sense of music, he is a step ahead to all
I need the Lead-Sheet or any score for git and keys. Is there s.th. like that available??

Forceful yet technical. A precise, driven musician who inspires the novice to pick up the sticks, as well as the pro to push the boundaries.
Easily in my top 3 favorite drummers.
