  • When you're first starting out, it's important to make sure you're dog/cat is getting the right amount of meat/bone/organ. Once you've been doing it awhile, the scale becomes unnecessary.

  • whats the point of weighing it?

  • Where do you buy bulk meat at?

  • Now that I have been feeding raw for a few years, I don't measure anything. Every now and again I will pull out the scale and weigh something, but basically, you can tell how much your dog needs by their weight. I now have three dogs on raw, two of them are about 70 pounds and still considered "puppies." I spent about $100-$120 for about 140 pounds of meat a month. My guys eat a LOT of meat, and the pulped veggies and fruit from my juicer. I don't make lists anymore, because I know what to buy.

  • I have been simply throwing down meat & bones for mine for over 2 years now, no problems.

  • 1st let me say I totally support what you're doing here. I feed my dogs(and cats) raw also. BUT, I will also say that when u over complicate things that's why most people are turned off by it. People just wanna throw some kibble in a dish and be done w/ it. I'M NOT SAYING WHAT U ARE DOING IS WRONG, but u could make sure people know that feeding raw doesn't require measuring, writing lists or anything like that unless u WANT to. Not out of necessity. Just make sure ya mix it up every few days.

  • thnx for this.. im getting a saint bernard female puppy soon! i really wanna feed her raw. what should i start her out on? what types of foods? how do i know shes getting all neutriton she needs?

  • @balla32636 The BARF Diets (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food Diet) consists of: 80% Meat (including heart) 10% Bones 10% Offal (Liver, etc.) NO FRUITS NO VEGETABLES NO SUPPLEMENTS All is feed whole and NOT ground. 2%-3% of the body weight spread out over two meals a day. Start with chicken as the main meat and stick with chicken for about 3-4 weeks. If the dogs poop is a grey to white color she has the right Calcium/Phosphorus ratio.
  • how do you determin how much you should feed each dog? just curious. never thought of feeding dogs or cats meat...well my cats i grew up with would hunt so they got theirs from the woods behind our home

  • @ham4fun 2%-3% of the dogs ideal body weight.

  • Thanks for the great video!

If you don't want to go through the hassle of preparing these nutritious meals, you can always buy from a local Austin supplier like Lone Star Raw Dog. Send us an email at lonestarrawdog@gmail(dot)com for more information!

  • i live in southern california. at the moment i am not finding it possible to feed my one dog ( 40lb pitbull pup) a raw diet for an affordable price. im forced to pay premium prices because no one sells wholsale out here. can anyone help?

  • @SuperGrooter Craigslist, Co-ops, etc.

  • @SuperGrooter ..Yes, actually have you ever determined how much you are paying per pound for dog 'food'...In most cases, even if you were to just goes to the store and buy whole chicken fryers(w/ included organs) it usually cost about the same.

  • I, as a vegetarian, find it hard to prepare raw meat fow my cat.

Sooo, I just buy it precut. xD

  • @HopesCharm bahahahahha. I am a vege as well, But i buy pork ribs, chicken, turkey, fish, and everything else and I dont have an issue

  • You can always check with your vet/animal doctor. He will recommend you places to buy raw food for you dogs and cats. My doctor has been very helpful.

  • You are definitely a great pet owner to take the time to make that list. Much Kudos to you!

  • I spent anywhere from $40-$60 a month to feed 4 dogs and a cat. It's the most economical way to feed your dogs if you have the resources (check your town for butcher shops to see if you can buy organs and trimmings at a reduced price!). I ended up with a dog who was allergic to chicken, and one who didn't tolerate raw, so we went back to using a premium, limited ingredient kibble. I miss raw a lot, coz it was WAY cheaper than buying high quality (made in the US) dog food. :-(

  • The amount you feed is based on weight and activity level. We bought cases of a few different meats - mostly heart (beef or turkey) and something with bone (chicken quarters work well). I'd spend 1 hr once a month to cut the meat into pieces, then store it in a deep freezer. That way I could just pull out a bag and defrost it overnight then have enough to feed everyone for several days.

  • wow, they devour that pretty quickly! i put my cat on a raw diet last year and it's been great! however, my sister has a dog and i wanted to know is that amount enough to sustain a medium to large sized dog throughout the day? cats don't eat much but i imagine that's a lot of ingredients you need to buy for a dog.

  • Are you a animal hoarder ;)!?!?!

  • No way i could do this each day! I just feed the best canned food (blue buffalo) I can afford.

  • @dmbfan07cb we do it once a fortnight and divide the meals into small packs in the freezer.

  • Did you consult your vet about this and how many lbs are appropriate or did you read it off a website? Im getting a shih tzu puppy in a couple of months and I want to do the raw meat diet with him/her.

  • @kailuagirl87 watch this video on raw feeding for more info youtube.com/watch?v=G3wLTlqnMMg&feature=feedwll

  • Hi.. how many times would you feed your dogs in a standard day?

  • @kr16794 as long as your feeding them 2-4% of their body weight

  • The look of anticipation in their K-9 eyes are priceless - bon appetit!!

  • Where do you buy in bulk? I know HEB is Texas-based and I'm in the Houston area. I pay $1 a lb. for various types of meat, but I have an English mastiff and he eats a ton.

  • @marielalaine: You might want to check your area for Co-op groups. There is a Yahoo group for Austin and we have members that live all around the area. It's made up of volunteers, so we all have to sign up for annual activities to keep it running. Good luck !

  • What is the name of the meat coop you order from? I've been buying my meat from costco and those really aren't "wholesale" prices..

  • @yankeesdjbw02: i am in Austin, Tx and there is a Yahoo group strictly for raw feeders! We buy in bulk (cases of meat up to 60 pounds or more). I only have one dog on raw now, do I don't order much anymore.

  • @erinhart75 What do you mean a Yahoo group strictly for raw feeders??

  • @DashingKardashianTV groups dot yahoo dog com/group/rawfeeding/

  • great video i havent feed my dogs raw before but i want to . should i do it gradually. whats your opinion.

  • awesome! thanks for the video!

  • That's really awesome! Do you feed vegetables as well?

  • It isn't common for dogs to get diseases or infections from eating raw. Their stomach is more acidic than ours, and they have shorter digestive tracts. They have these because they are naturally MEAT eaters. Just like wolves. Cooked bones are very harmful, but raw will keep your dog's teeth super clean... no more dentals!

Feeding raw is cheaper than a good premium kibble! For a fifty pound dog, it costs me only 30 dollars a month to feed. That is good!

  • Those dog's eat better than I do.

I wish I could get my dog on the raw food diet, but I'm getting killed with my student loan bills, rent, and vehicle expenses every month. It's a shame knowing what he's missing out on...

  • are chicken bones or ribs or fish bones safe for the dogs

when they eat it raw???? I just got a new yellow lab

and want the healthiest food for him and the safest

I do not want to feed him commercial kibble food.

  • You posted a comment on a raw food diet for pets about poultry & fish bones. Cooked bones of any kind can splinter, which will choke a pet. However, uncooked bones from fish and poultry should be easy to eat and digest. The most important thing is to supervise your pet while eating so that s/he doesn't choke. This should even be done when feeding kibble, as the risk of choking is always there no matter what. Also try teaching your pet to chew thoroughly. Pets fed kibble often don't know how.

  • um wont they get tapeworms, bacterial infections.. etc from eating raw meat??

  • Where do you order your meat from??

  • I belong to a raw meat coop that orders human grade meat (the kind you can buy in the grocery store) at wholesale prices.

  • okay so i fed my dog a raw chicken thigh and he loves it! i was wondering if the meat you get is pumped up with any harmons or anything because i want my dog to have fresh and bio clean meat.

  • Our dogs eat the same meat we eat....it's 'all natural,' but not organic. If we buy from our local supermarket, I usually get leg quarters for about $0.88/pound. When I buy in bulk I get them for about $0.60/pound!

  • iv heard they can eat cow and goat toungue and tracia and tripe and stuff is that true? could i go to a butcher shop and ask them for there left overs?i dont trust the grocery store here there meat is always rotten

  • I really love this video. I feed my dogs a raw prey model diet. I am going to share this video with anyone that thinks raw feeding is to complicated.

  • Wow, this is much easier than I thought. How much do you spend every week for a dog?

I thought I have to grind the bones and add veges and all. Don't you use veges and fruits?

  • Eh, it depends. We now only have two dogs (both under 50 pounds) so we spend about $35 a month for everything. We do feed fruits and veggies - they love apples and carrots and really anything we will let them have. We don't grind anything, but I do make a veggie shake from time to time and freeze it for a nice cold treat (I have a video for that too).

  • i want to switch my 8 month "bullboxer" to a raw meat diet. what would you suggest i start with. i'm new to this.

  • very useful. Do you clean or wash the meat?

  • nope - feed it just the way it comes (bloody!).

  • Where do you actually store 40-60 pounds of meat? Do you have a separate freezer?

  • yes - we buy in bulk so we bought a deep freezer and keep it in the garage.

  • how often do you feed your dog in a day. cause I am thinking of feeding my pup raw meat. also, have you see any improvement in their heathy since you fed them raw meat. what make you what to feed them raw meat.

  • they eat twice a day usually - i break up the feedings and give them the "meaty bones" in the evening when i have more time to watch them and make sure they don't choke on anything. some people feed only once a day. i started feeding them raw because of health issues (shedding, allergies, etc) and they showed improvement almost immediately. plus two of them are >8 yrs old and still get excellent health reports from our vet. fyi- it's less expensive than buying the "high quality" dog food too.

  • this is the best way to go but this has to be way too expensive

  • If you don't have deals on meat, then you will spend hundreds of dollars feeding raw if you have a large dog. Simple math. Dog weighs 130lbs, using only 2% gives 2.6lbs/day......1.3lbs of RMB, 10oz of Meat and maybe 4oz of organs. It's the meat and organs that will bankrupt you. Chicken Quarters can be cheap....everything else....high as a cats' ass. Look at her prices online and you'll see.

  • Your dogs are great. My big ass Great Pyr takes his sweet time when he eats. Took him 45 minutes to eat half of a chicken.

  • Im gettin a new pup soon and this was very helpful and easy! Its like feeding little wolves lol

  • I also feed raw and it is great to see someone who knows how to do it right. This video is great; not only informative, but inspirational! It helps people see how easy it really is...

  • Thank you!

  • wow... those dogs really know how to eat..

i'm trying to switch to raw feeding. ^_^

hope i can get more info about it. ^^

  • Great to meet another raw feeder here on YouTube. What a wonderful pack you have.

  • Wow, those are hungry dogs!

    Can they eat fish?

  • they are hungry all the time! they can eat any type of meat - whole fish is pretty messy with the scales though!

  • I have a 16 month old dobe. I feed him Rice/Wheat + cooked beef tripe + Royal Cannin. I want to get him used to eating BARF. What body parts of chicken or Beef do you suggest to start off with? Isnt it too costly to feed all BARF?

  • Raw prefer raw food only for our pack. We buy meat in bulk and pay about $0.50/lb. We feed about 120 pounds of meat a month (to four dogs and one cat). Research shows that dogs don't digest grains very well, and our dogs don't eat any at all. As for meats: chicken leg quarters are a staple in our house - they're cheap and have a good bone/meat ratio. We also use beef or turkey heart as a staple. Tripe is good, but only if it's unwashed and raw. Check out the "hepful links" page on my website!

  • Hmm... Thanks. Although I am in India, I end up spending a lot more on one dog than what you are spending on 4 dogs per month (feeding wise). I spend 50$ on Royal Cannin every month, 10$ on beef tripe (I keep it low since it stinks) and few more $ on wheat or rice. The tripe stinks, if I feed him raw tripe, wouldnt his mouth stink even more..

I am going terribly wrong somewhere, I am spending too much on his diet I feel after reading what you have written.

  • Yeah, heart and liver are really bloody, so I like to use gloves when I have them. Plus..it's good to show people the "proper" way to handle meat. =)

  • I'm not sure what kind of resources you have for meat, but you ARE spending a lot for dry food! If you are able to feed raw meats, you really will benefit your dog much more! Raw tripe DOES smell terrible, and the alternative is giving your dog preground green veggies instead. Dogs don't have the enzymes to break down whole veggies, so they must be pulverized first. If you can find a meat market or discount grocery store that sells all parts of the animal, you can probably get some good prices!

  • Wow you the only raw feeder I know who wears gloves when handling the meat.
