  • Dennis DeYoung WAS STYX! Whoever said he was a control freak should be shot. Roger Waters was a control freak. DDY never insisted being Styx like Roger insisted "he was Pink Floyd" and reducing Rick Wright and David Gilmour's contributions and eventually firing Wright during the mixing of The Wall and reducing DG's singing and guitar and music to a song or two. DDY held out for Tommy to come back when TS quit like a baby in 1983 whilst coked and drunk off his tree. TS stabbed DDY in the back!

  • Do they did a bad Job on the Solo here :( Might be a crappy air mix but it's not synced to the rhythms either?

  • De Young IS Styx as a whole without him they are missing SO MUCH! Don't bother seeing them today but do go see Dennis DeYoung you won't be disappointed!

  • I remember seeing them in Rapid city, SD in 1981. What a great concert that was.

  • long live,,prog rock of the 1970"s//////////

  • notice that most of the 81 video is all on dennis? I get it now!,,,, well I have for a long time but it just really stood out on this video!

  • 3 people where missing

  • HELLO DENNIS AND WELCOME TO MY PC MONITOR Ô¿Ô

  • Chuck and John...so glad that whomever took this video captured those precious moments of them. The two brothers who wrote the backbeat that woke up Americans!

  • On July 10th they jammed for 30 minutes together, heres the link

    jambands.com/news/2010/08/17/a-look-at-the-david-gilmour-and-roger-waters-reunion

Roger's voice is kinda failing him though, he said The Wall tour will probably be his finale. Davie is joining him for at least one date, maybe more. The two have finally put aside their differences and too bad this isnt 1987 or 1994 and we might have seen that reunion. But older minds, lesser egos, rid the bitterness!

  • Pink Floyd was already ended even before Rick died. Dave said in many interviews he would not bring back the Pink Floyd brand again, that his life had changed, he had become content with his life raising new children without new PF albums and big tours. However, the original band PF reunion was possible, even Waters was open to it. Roger said he didnt think Dave was up for a big tour anymore. Roger would have done it, even now the two are having a reunion.

  • Lawrence Gowan is a joke as the replacement for Dennis DeYoung in Styx. The best band ever at replacing a lead singer was Van Halen for choosing Sammy Hagar as the second lead singer. Ironically he was their second choice, Patty Smyth was the first choice. Imagine Van Halen with a female voice, the voice that sang in the band Scandal?

  • I have to admit Benoît David is a dead ringer for Jon Anderson. I have never heard anyone sound so much like someone else. I am not saying they were right for firing Jon Anderson though! Arnel Pineda of Journey is a good singer, he performs the music well, better than the second Steve but no way is he a replacement for Steve Perry. Ray Wilson was terrible in Genesis. Kelly Hansen of Foreigner tries his best but it's not Foreigner anymore.

  • this is what went wrong with Styx theatrics

  • 1981...16 graduated High School off to college and Rock ruled!!!!!!

  • Its wonderful to see this time again,,,

    Greatest Band ever......

  • He does that style that would make him a big hit on American Idol or Star Search.

  • WOW!!

  • Rush was the greatest of all!

  • @pickzzzzzz Sure but dont forget about Blind Faith

  • 1981 was one of the best years in rock.. cheap trick, ac/dc, rock and roll was great and i was 10.. ha ha ha fun!

  • AMEN! Rock ruled in 1981. Most of the #1 albums in the US that year were by rock bands like REO Speedwagon, Styx (who kicked ass when DeYoung/Young/Shaw/Panozzos worked as a team), Foreigner, The Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones, Steveie Nicks, Journey, AC/DC. Also, the year belonged to Genesis, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Dio led Sabbath. Also Queen played their first gigs in South America that year and Pink Floyd's last shows with Roger Waters until their swan song in '05 at Live 8.

  • Amazing performance! Tommy's solo is sick live but I always wondered how he got such a gnarly sound on it in the studio version. Is it a talkbox or something?

  • It's not a talk box, although it does sound a bit like it. My best guess is that he used a heavily overdriven (not distorted) tube amp and a wah pedal left mostly in the open position (a little like Michael Schenker often used). And probably a mid-range boost with the highs and lows flat.

  • That's not a talkbox though it kind of sounds like one; I think he's using an Octave Pedal.

What's cool in this is Tommy's tapping during the solo; I never saw that before. I guess he's got a little EVH in his playing!!!

  • I was there!!!!!!!!!

  • I often wondered how John played this live on the drums now I know thank you so much

  • the same thing happens in sports as well

people sacrifce *TRUE* greatness for silly greedy desires!

  • I wish there were some more Styx videos (up to 1999) around that could be posted. Ive been looking everywhere and can't find anymore like this. Love these old tours!

  • Stop with the rhetoric.

Tommy and JY acknowledge Dennis' accomplishments and contribution to the band. They just feel they can no longer work with him.

  • That's not accurate. Dennis was suffering with chronic fatigue syndrome and the lights were hurting his eyes. He took off a whole year and it was going into a second year and the band wanted to go on. Much like The Journey story with Steve Perry's hip problem, the band continued with someone else. Same thing just happened to Yes with Jon Anderson when he came down ill. They replaced him already. Even Journey's 1st replacement singer had voice problems & was replaced again with the Filipino

  • It doesn’t matter if "they can no longer work with him". Their egos, I' am sure, are all the size of melons or maybe that dirty dollar had something to do with. Who cares? It's just cool they hooked up for that small portion of time, and we were there to listen to them and now watch them WHEN THEY TOTALLY kicked butt NOT PARTCIALLY. 2 Years Later

  • Kansas and Styx the best american's bands

  • why is it on many rock bands the guitar guy forces out the lead singer? Is it their ego?

    RE: Styx,Journey,VanHalen.....etc

  • KANSAS

  • Stinks that I was five years old when this took place. Would have paid to go see this concert. Thank God for this. Styx will always be Dennis/John P/Chuck/JY/Tommy/John C/Glen. Todd is cool but Ricky and Lawrence suck!

  • i really love jy's solo for this!!!

  • I was at this concert! I was just archiving my cassettes to mp3 when I came across my recording of this concert and wondered if anyone had posted to youtube! Ah I miss Capital Center! Thanks for putting this up it brings back great memories. Do you have Come Sail Away from that night?

  • If you go to my playlists, all my videos are grouped in the way they were taken from there original sources. Under Styx 81, you will get the whole concert.

  • @foxpuck I remember having this album ( Grand Illusion) on 8-track tape.

  • So, any partiular reason you took all that time to find this rare video? I mean, if you hate Styx so much, why did you even look at this?

  • saw 'em in '78 just as this album was breaking them out...was an awesome show!

  • These are great! Thanks for posting them!!!

  • Thank you for these STYX videos!
